  • This study was a descriptive study to investigate the effects of nursing students' consciousness of biomedical ethics, good death recognition, and self-esteem on attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. The subjects of this study were 204 nursing students attending university. The data were collected from October 24 to October 31, 2017 and analyzed using the SPSS Win. 22.0 program. Attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment scored $2.97{\pm}0.29$ out of 4, $3.01{\pm}0.31$ for biomedical ethics, $3.24{\pm}0.38$ for good death recognition and $3.23{\pm}0.41$ for self-esteem. There was a significant positive correlation between attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and good death recognition, and there was a significant positive correlation between attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and self-esteem. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was found that good death perception affected nursing students' attitudes toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. In other words, elevated perception of good death was associated with more positives attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. Based on the above results, it is necessary to develop a systematic education program for nursing college students. In addition, this researcher proposes an in-depth study to explore the variables that influence nursing students' attitudes toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effects of knowledge of Advance Directives (AD) and the patient's perception of a peaceful death on their attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and to provide basic data for the development of a nursing intervention program for activating self-determination in the withdrawal of life-sustaining support of patients. The subjects were 167 adult cancer patients who received outpatient or inpatient treatment, from September 15, 2019, to March 30, 2020. The data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression by using SPSS 21.0. From the results, it was observed that the knowledge of AD was 8.87±2.46 out of 12, perception of a peaceful death was 2.87±0.42 out of 4, and attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 3.46±0.49 out of 5. There was a positive correlation between knowledge of AD, perception of a peaceful death, and their attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. The influencing variables were the knowledge of AD, perception of a peaceful death, discussion with family on withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, and explanation power was 16.0% (F=10.355, p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program that would improve the perception of a peaceful death, increase the knowledge of AD to improve the patients' attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. An intervention to assist a discussion between the patients and their families in advance would also be useful.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine what is the path that family and socio-environmental factors of adolescents lead to school dropout called educational crisis behavior. To investigate these research problems, the path was analyzed on the basis of the related data and variations after interview with 120 crisis adolescents in 'J Youth Counseling Center' in Jeon-ju City. By the results of this analysis, the family ties as a familial factor and the deviation friends as a socio-environmental factor had an effect on adolescents' school dropout behavior. These results indicate the need to reform the interpersonal relationship in family and school friends for preventing and solving the adolescents' crisis behavior such as school dropout behavior.

  • The aim of this study is to elucidate the meaning of school dropout which teenager unmarried mothers have been experiencing. Thus, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews of 6 unmarried mothers to portray vividly their voices and the data were analyzed using a qualitative case study. Acording to the results, the meaning of school dropout of teenager unmarried mothers was redefined as the matter of "identity and status deprivation". Also, their school dropout expediences should be analyzed in the more extended perspective beyond the negative meaning of the existing studies. This meant " the one sided exclusion from academic community." This could be drawn with the implications that the exclusion acted as the inner mechanism of another social exclusion and their school dropout served as the bondages of their lifetime. That is, the problem of school dropout has the meaning of 'the present tense' and 'the future tense' simultaneously. Within this context, the phenomenon in which they experienced was acting as the foundation of a continuous exclusion and discrimination. Also, it was found that our society applied its standards to them unilaterally and they came to live as otherness through their pregnancy. Based on these results, this study has an important significance in that it overcame the limitations of previous research and investigated their subjective worlds.

  • This study was a descriptive study to investigate the influence of moral self-concept and ethical values on attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment among nursing students. The study subjects were 296 nursing students from 2 nursing colleges in G city. The data were collected from June 12 to June 23, 2017 and analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program. The mean score of the moral self-concept was 3.48±0.33, of ethical values was 3.50±0.37 and of attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 3.13±0.43. In attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, there were significant differences in grade(F=3.21, p=.024), practice(t=2.06, p=.040) and nursing ethics education(t=2.98, p=.003). There was a significant negative correlation between attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and moral self-concept(r=-.14, p=.017) and ethical values(r=-.42, p<.001). The significant predictors that influence the attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment were ethical values and nursing ethics education. The explanatory power was 22.5%. Based on the above results, additional studies to determine the various factors affecting attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment of nursing students should be conducted and systematic education programs need to be developed to foster utilitarian values in order to form a positive attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.

  • This study was conducted to examine the resources that influence the choice of drop-out students' reentry to school. A total of five years of panel analysis of 2,553 drop-out teenagers from 2013 to 2017 were utilized. In order to verify the resources that affect the choice of school reentry of teenagers with experiences of suspension of studies to formal middle and high school after July 2012, this study analyzed drop-out teenagers' family resources as well as their psychological, mental, and social-relationship resources. A crossover analysis, t-test, and hierarchical logistic regression analysis were conducted. The major outcomes of this study are as follows: First, the socio-demographic variables among the resources that affected the choice of reentry for school of teenager children were the type of family and number of moves to a new house. Second, the psychological and sentimental variable that affected the choice of school reentry was a decreasing level of positive recognition of the situation of suspension of studies combined with depression, impulsiveness, and perceiving society as one that discriminates based on the level of education. Third, significant family resource variables were the type of family form and parents providing economic support, which is a subfactor of parental attachment. Fourth, the presence of a mentor as a helpful social-relationship resource had a significant effect on relational resources. This study is significant in the sense that the positive family resources that affect the choice of school reentry of drop-out teenage students were determined, and the positive directivity of supportive family resources is presented for parents with teenage children experiencing a suspension of studies.
