  • Recently, fiber optic hydrophone is a subject which has attracted as a underwater acoustic sensor. In this paper, a length of optical fiber is bonded to an end-capped hollow cylinder of some elastic material, e. g. aluminum and glass-pyres. The normalized sensitivity is derived according to the direction of polarization. Derived sensitivity equations are simulated for two different mandrel materials. The results are also compared to the McMahon's results which calculated for an average Pockel coefficient. Based on the numerical simulation normalized sensitivity is propotional to the inner to outer diameter ratio.

  • This research has focused on comparing the capacity predicted by the theoretical formula with the one measured by field load tests to examine characteristics of the bearing capacity of a helical pile. The helical pile is featured by a central shaft with one or more helical-shaped bearing plates. Being established by a small rotary attached to an excavator that applies toque, the helical piles can be readily constructed at narrow sites, especially in an urban area with relatively less noise than the others requiring driving and excavation. Although many cases of the helical pile constructions can be recently found, the bearing capacity of the pile has been limitedly studied. To this end, this contribution analyzes and presents comprehensive results of the ten field loading tests with an application of different parameters depending on joint condition and specification of the helical piles, and types of tests and grouting.

  • The effects of the STS 304 hollow cylinder property variations on the non-steady heat conduction are considered in this paper. In the non steady state, the specific heat and conductivity are depended on the temperature variations, and these properties affect to the governing equation on heat conduction. But the most of numerical analysis on heat conduction is assumed to constant properties which is conductivity and specific heat. Assuming that the properties are reacted sensitively, the numerical results can have the difference of between constant properties with non constant properties. The main parameters are specific heat and conductivity. The temperature distributions of the STS 304 hollow cylinder became in steady state after 4 minutes in case of the constant properties. As the conductivity is varied with temperature, the temperature distributions became in steady state after 15 minutes. Therefore, a numerical analysis of the non steady state heat transfer is so important in case of varying temperature.

  • In this paper, to develop the fiber optic hydrophone for the use of low frequency applications, two channels TDM(Time Division Multiplexing) fiber-optic hydrophone array was fabricated and their acoustic charateristics were investigated in the acoustic water tank. A fiber length of the order of 150m is wounded at the hollow cylinder type aluminum mandrel and the fundamental natural frequency of the mandrel maintained above 10kHz. An unbalanced interferometer (discrete Mach-Zehnder type) was used. Sound detection performance is tested in the underwater tank with 3kHz continuous sound source. Finally, it is shown that two channels TDM fiber-optic hydrophone array can detect 3kHz sound stably. This results can also applicable for the development of multi-channel fiber optic hydrophone array.

  • In this paper, the time-domain finite element formulations for axisymmetric linear viscoelastic problems, especially for the viscoelastic hollow sphere and cylinder, under various boundary conditions are presented with the theoretical solutions of them obtained by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. It is assumed that the viscoelastic material behaves like a standard linear solid in distortion and elastically in dilatation. Numerical examples are solved based on the spherically symmetric, axisymmetric and plane strain finite element models. Good agreements are obtained between numerical and theoretical solutions, which shows the validity and accuracy of the presented method.

  • A series of torsion shear tests were performed according to various stress-paths on hollow cylinder specimens of $K_0$-consolidated clay to investigate the influence of rotation of the principal stresses on the stress-strain and strength characteristics. The effects of stress-paths and reorientation of principal stress were mainly observed in the prefailure stress-strain behavior. The experimentally obtained failure surface from torsion shear tests could practically be modeled by an isotropic failure criterion. Coupling effects between stresses and strains were investigated when both torsion shear and vertical stresses were applied. The work-space in torsion shear tests was illustrated and the relation between stresses and strain increments was also investigated in the work-space.

  • To substitute TLS in the hybrid system which is combined with Sagnac interferometer and fiber bragg grating (FBG) it is necessary to investigate how the laser source (TLS and CW) and sensor material variate the response of fiber optic sensor. Two different hollow cylinder type mandrel materials are proposed which are PTFE and PTFE+carbon and 18 m optical fiber is wounded at the mandrel surface. CW laser source experiments had been done in the oil tank which is filled with transformer oil in the 1 kHz~20 kHz frequency range. Also Sagnac interferometer fiber optic sensor is combined with FBG called hybrid system and TLS used as a light source. Based on the experimental results PTFE sensor showed more higher magnitude of detection signal rather than carbon sensor and this result is agreement with the McMahon's theoretical results. Phase variation is inversely proportional to the elastic modulus of the mandrel material. In PTFE fiber sensor, tunable laser source showed more higher performance rather than CW case. Therefore, TLS fiber optic sensor can be applied to the hybrid system which is combined with Sagnac and FBG.

  • The high-tension bolted joints are clamped by the axial force which approaches the yielding strength. The introduced axial force is transmitted to the connection members pass through washer. The transferred load in connections is balanced to the compressive stress of plates, axial force in bolts and the external loads. In this mechanism, the compressive stress and slip load we dominated by the effective stiffness of bolted joints and plates. In general the effective stiffness is specified to product to the effective area and elasticity modulus in connections. In this reason, the conic projection formular which is assumed that the axial force in bolts is distributed to the cone shape and that region is related to the elastic deformation mechanism in connections, was proposed. But it conclude what kind of formula is justified. Therefore in this paper, the fatigue tests are performed to the high tension bolted joints and inspected to the phase on the friction face. And using the FEM and numerical method, it is analyzed and approximated to the compressive stress distribution and its region. Moreover, it is estimated to the effective area and to the relation the friction area to the effective compressive distribution region.

  • In this study, the characteristic of fluid flow in the new type lung assist devices has been established using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). For the modeling, the hollow fiber was ignored, and vertical types and tangential types were used for the model. Which was to analyze the flow characteristics of the fluid flow model when there exists 1 and 2 input/output ports, and when the input/output ports is located at the center of the cylinder and at the tangential direction with the cylinder wall. The modeling results showed that it was possible to eliminate no-flow region(stagnant layer) as shown in the vertical type when an inlet and an outlet were installed on the tangential direction of the cylinder as shown in the tangential type. Also, in the tangential type, vortex-type flow appeared as dominant, and it showed a complicated flow not deviated to one side. When the number of input/output was two, there was no deviated flow, and complicated flows were generated all across the tube. From the test result, it was found that input/output of flow was tangential type and complicated flows with no stagnant layer would be generated when there are two inputs/outputs, respectively.
