1) The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum which is known to produce fusaric acid (wilt toxin) on the germination of sesame seeds and the growth of sesame seedlings. 2) Culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum 1. vasinfectum used in this study strongly or weakly inhibited the germination and bring about necrosis accompanying black discoloration of sesame seeds. 3) Varietal difference of sesame in the germination response on the culture filtrates of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum is not shown in this study. 4) This study reveals that differential five strains of Fnsarium oxysoprum f. vasinfectum used in this study differ greatly in the toxicity of culture filtrates inhibiting the germination of sesame seeds. 5) In the seedling bed added with culture filtrates of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum, the growth of shoot as well as root system of sesame seedlings are notably inhibited and necrotic black discoloration appear on both shoot and root system. But in the seedling beds added with weaker concentration of culture filtrates $/(10\%)$ the growth of shoot is slightly promoted. 6) In culture of sesame seedlings with Knop's solution containing 1 to 3 per cent culture filtrates, the growth of shoot as well as root system are slightly retarded" and till the time of development of the third leaves the whole stem and leaf petiole tissue are weakened so that they become thread like accompanying brown discoloration, interveinal light brown area appear in the second leaves, and the third leaves curl from both sides towards the middle with necrotic brown discoloration, especially symptoms of injury on the third leaves are nearly similar that of the leaves of wilted sesame in the field. 7) A pararell relationship is not found between toxicity of culture filtrates and pathogenicity of five differential strains of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum used in this study.
For reducing planting distance in greenhouse grown watermelon(Citrullus vulgaris S.) this experiment was carried out to study the effect of DIF on stem elongation and growth. Day temperatures ranged from $25^{\circ}C$ to 35$^{\circ}C$ : night temperatures ranged from $25^{\circ}C$ to 35$^{\circ}C$ at 5$^{\circ}C$ interval. Stem elongation, leaf size, dry weight and flowering were influence by day and night temperatures. Stem elongation and length of internode decrease with increasing night temperature at same day temperature. The optimums for number of leaves categories was with day at 35$^{\circ}C$, and flower production was the lowest at $25^{\circ}C$. Total leaf area meter was maximized at 35/30(DT/NT), but for size pet one leave was the largest 25/25(DT/NT). Responses of leaf size per leaves were similar to that of internode length, with maximum day and night at $25^{\circ}C$. Total plant dry weight was the highest 35/30 (DT/NT) and minimum occurring at 25/30(DT/NT). The shoot/root ratios of dry weight Increased with day temperature up to 3$0^{\circ}C$ and were the highest with night at $25^{\circ}C$. Chlorophyll contents decreased with decreasing day and night temperature.
Global warming brings changes of natural ecosystems and affects on the plant growth response. Quercus acutissima and Q. variabilis are taxonomically similar and dominant native species in deciduous forests in South Korea. In order to understand the growth response of Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis to global warming condition, we cultivated the seedling of the two oak species in ambient condition(control) and treatment with elevated $CO_2$(700~800ppm) and increased air temperature(approximately $3^{\circ}C$ above than control). Then we measured the growth characteristic among them and analyzed the relationship between two species using PCA ordination. Stem length and total plant weight of Q. acutissima were significantly affected by elevated $CO_2$ concentration and increased air temperature. Stem diameter and weight of Q. variabilis were significantly affected by elevated $CO_2$ concentration and increased air temperature(p<0.05). The variation characteristics of Q. acutissima were changed more than Q. variabilis by elevated $CO_2$ concentration and increased air temperature. These result suggested that Q. acutissima was more sensitive to global warming situation than Q. variabilis in central region of Korea. PCA ordination showed that two species were arranged by two distinct groups based on 10 characters by elevated $CO_2$ and increased air temperature.

To develop Korean native lilies as mini-potted plants, the effects of plant growth retardants on inhibiting stem elongation and improving flowering rate were evaluated. Bulblets of Lilium concolor var. parthneion (5-7 g) and L. dauricum (3-4 g fresh wt) derived from in vitro culture and then enlarged by field culture were applied with 0, 25, 50, or $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ancymidol, diniconazole, and uniconazole through bulb dipping, foliar spray, and drench. In L. concolor var. parthneion, uniconazole dipping most effectively reduced plant height by 60.7-78.3% depending on concentration compared with control without decreasing flowering percentage. In L. dauricum, dipping into diniconazole solution significantly retarded the plant height by 70.0-86.3% and improved flowering percentage by 8.3-18.2% compared to control of 0%. Drench of $25-50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ancymidol was also effective on inhibition of stem elongation and improvement of flowering rate. Therefore, dipping into $50-100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole solution in L. concolor var. parthneion and dipping into $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole solutions or drench of $25mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ancymidol in L. dauricum can be useful to produce the mini-potted plants.
In vitro culture system was established to induce multiple shoots of Thymus quinquecostatus Celak. by investigating the effects of cytokinins. Stem explants were cultures on MS medium supplemented with either five drfferent plant growth regulators or their combinations under light or dark condition. The most effective cytokininsource was the combination of BA 1.0mg/L and TDZ 0.1mg/L for producing shoots (6.05$\pm$1.51), zeatin 2.0mg/L and TEZ 0.1mg/L for elongating shoots (3.27$\pm$0.66cm) under the light condition. In addition the most effective cytokinin was 2-ip 2.0mg/L for producing shoots(5.20$\pm$1.81), zeatin 2.0mg/L for elongating shoots(5.64$\pm$1.24cm)under the dark condition. Overall, the average percent for in vitro shooting was greater than 89.58%.
Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) is exotic plant and thus susceptible to cold climate in the middle part of Korean peninsular. Several hybrids have recently been developed to enhance cold tolerance by crossing them with domestic species (A. arguta), We have developed an efficient micropropagation technique for the hybrids using both axillary bud and callus culture systems. Shoot proliferation from axillary buds was possible on St medium supplemented with 0.2 mg/L Bh and 3.0 mg/L GA$_3$. In vivo cuttings of the proliferated shoots were more effective for root induction and subsequent survival than in vitro rooting. More than 95% of the plantlets were successfully transferred to field. Effective callus induction was achieved on MS or B$_{5}$ medium with 2,4-D or NAA. Although callus induction could be made from any combinations of media and auxins, shoot regeneration was observed only from the callus induced on medium containing NAA.A.
The effects of Mn on growth and nutrient status of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Mn concentrations was added as manganese chloride at 0, 30 and 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The 2-year-old seedlings were transplanted into the solution maintained at pH 4.0, and grown for 90 days in a greenhouse. The Mn treatment induced a significant reduction in the dry weight growth of the seedlings. The relative growth rate(RGR) and net assimilation rate(NAR) of the seedlings decreased with increasing Mn concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. For the nutrient status of the seedlings, Ca and Mg content in trunk and root was least in 60ppm Mn treatment, and Mn content in needle was about 3 times more than in root. Also the net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings was significantly lower both in 30ppm and 60ppm Mn treatment compared to them in 0ppm. This result suggests that the reductions in the RGR and NAR of the seedlings may be resulted from the inhibition of net photosynthesis by the mixed effect of lower nutrient uptake of roots and excess accumulation of Mn in needle.
