  • With the increase of the elderly population, demand for improvement of quality of life and measurement of mental state has increased. However, much of the self-reported diagnosis does not reflect cognitive impairment. This study aims to measure the dwelling depression by applying K-HTP and verify the validity. 301 persons over 65 years old who live as single and couple households in Daejeon and surrounding districts were surveyed during 22 January to 2 February, 2018. The correlations between the dwelling depression and K-HTP are clarified and the validity was evaluated. The correlations between the geriatric dwelling depression index(GDDI) and the GDDI based on K-HTP(GDDI-K) are clarified and the accuracy was analyzed. The results showed that the K-HTP can be utilized to measure the dwelling depression. We suggested a new measurement tool and provide further benefits for researches on diagnoses using the projective method.

  • As the living environment is regarded as a key factor that affects the quality of life of the elderly, the necessity for an accurate measurement of depression for the elderly has increased. In order to diagnose accurately, it is crucial to consider variables such as the cognitive characteristics and living conditions. In this study, 301 persons over 65 years old who live in single and couple elderly households over 65 years were surveyed from 1 January 2018 to 2 February to measure the dwelling depression by applying projective images. The correlations between the dwelling depression and projective images are clarified and the reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated. The correlations between the geriatric dwelling depression index(GDDI) and the GDDI based on projective images(GDDI-I) are clarified. The accuracy of the GDDI-I is analyzed. As a result the projective image questionnaire has a correlation with the existing self-report questionnaire. It is hoped that the results will provide a basis for further researches on psychological diagnoses using the projective method.

  • The study looked into the effect of housing poverty on the depression level for the elderly in depth. In this study, we defined housing poverty as sub-minimum standard housing conditions, excess housing expenditure and housing instability. In order to verify the correlation of two variables, a mediating model structured by social welfare service was used which gave out the 4th Korea welfare panel data. When it came to our research methods, structured equation analysis was applied to verify the mediating effect and theoretical background. The results revealed that housing poverty of the elderly directly affected their depression level. Also the satisfaction of social service showed a partial mediating effect between housing poverty and depression level. But the mediating effect of social service experience between housing poverty and depression level was not statistically significant. The outcome of this study indicated the practical and social intervention to promote a mental health of the elderly by improving residential environment.

  • This study was conducted with the purpose of examining the direct effect of daily life restrictions on the behavior of people with physical disabilities who are easily exposed to 'disaster inequality' on emergency behavior, and comprehensively examining the mediating effect of depression and residential environment in this relationship. For this purpose, a total of 803 persons with physical disabilities aged 20 years or older were analyzed among the panels of the second year(2019) of the Panel Survey for People with Disabilities. As a result of the analysis, first, the daily life restriction of the physically disabled had a positive(+) effect on depression, a negative(-) effect on the residential environment and emergency behavior and depression had a negative(-) effect on the emergency behavior. The residential environment had a positive(+) effect on behavior in case of emergency. Second, it was found that depression and residential environment had a mediating effect between daily life restrictions and emergency behavior of the physically handicapped. In other words, it suggests that the living environment and depression can play an important role in the effect of daily life restrictions on the behavior in case of an emergency. Based on the analysis results, the implications of the study were suggested.

  • This study aims to examine the effect of housing environment on single mothers' health and to find out how to improve their health and housing environment. For the purpose, this study analyzed the Single-parents survey carried out by Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in 2015. The results are as follows. When residential functions such as mining, heating, and noise are not fulfilled among the physical characteristics of the residential environment, single-mothers are more likely to feel unhealthy. Among the socio-economic characteristics of housing, people who live in public rental housing are more likely to feel unhealthy than those living in own house. And people who have excessive household debt are less healthy than those having no debt. Socioeconomic characteristics of housing environments had a significant effect on depression of single-mothers. Based on the results, the author suggested that housing improvement services, survey of housing conditions of single parents, provision of services considering household debt and improving residential conditions of public rentals houses should be implemented.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the association between residential environment satisfaction and elderly depression with a focus on the mediating effect of physical activity. The survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons performed in 2017 was used for analysis. Among total 10,299 who aged 65 years or above and participated in survey, only 10,059 people who answered the survey questions by themselves without missing main questions were included in this analysis. Mediation effects were tested with Baron & Kenny(1986) method and Sobel test(Sobel, 1982). As results, first, residential environment satisfaction was negatively associated with elderly depression. Second, residential environment satisfaction was positively related to physical activity. Lastly, it was found that physical activity mediated the relationship between residential environment satisfaction and elderly depression. The results showed that older adults who satisfied in residential environment were more likely to participate in physical activity, and older people who participated in physical activity were less likely to experience depressive symptoms. Based on these results, the paper suggests the importance of subjective satisfaction of residential environment and participation of physical activity for mental health in later life, and some intervention strategies for Aging In Place.

In this study, from 386 older people over the age of 60 in senior welfare center and senior club of Cheongju region, the data were collected by questionnaire during October, 2012. The findings of this study are as follows: First, safety had not any significant influence on older people's quality of life, while convenience had a significant positive influence on their quality of life. Second, safety had not any significant influence on older people's self-esteem and depression, while convenience had a significant positive influence on older people's self-esteem and it had a significant negative influence on their depression Third, older people's self-esteem had a significant positive influence on their quality of life, while older people's depression had a significant negative influence on their quality of life. Fourth, between safety and older people's quality of life, the indirect effects of older people's self-esteem and depression as mediating variables were not found. However, between convenience and older people's quality of life, the indirect effects of older people's self-esteem and depression as mediating variables were found. This study shows that various measures for convenience of housing environment need to be prepared to increase older people's quality of life and self-esteem and to lessen their depression.
