  • In study, Structural stability was considered when applying the high strength strut method with improved general strut method. considered whether there is sufficient stiffness to so as not buckling to the maximum hypothetical earth pressure. also structure stability of the strut component was reviewed. The high strength strut method is a technique used in place of the general strut method. high strength prefabricated Strut method is a technique that has bolt holes drilled in the upper flange at regular intervals. As a result of the buckling analysis, it was considered that the safety factor increased by about 5 %. also Since the stress generated is below the allowable stress, it is judged that structural stability of the strut is ensured. In particular, the safety factor of axial compressive stress increases about 16 % with use of high strength steel when applying the high strength prefabricated strut method. the high strength strut method is construction method may shorten the construction period and there is no expense to purchase additional materials.

  • The steel braces are used to control the lateral drift of high rise buildings. The braces are designed as tensile members since the braces consisted of slender member can not resist compressive loads by elastic buckling. To resolve this problem, a lot of research were performed to develop the non-buckling member. The force limiting device (FLD.) is one of them. The purpose of this study is the development of FLD. to prevent a elastic buckling for a slender member. The folded plate type is proposed to induce the yielding before occurring elastic buckling. In this study, member test and FEM analysis for proposed type were performed. Further, It is verified that the structure with FLD member is stable by high energy absorption. The proposed folded plate type FLD could be effective to preserve the compressive member from the elastic buckling.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of buckling loads for steel arches with new type cross section which is consisted of T-section and pipe-section. A general purpose finite-element program ABAQUS was used to evaluate the inelastic buckling strengths of the arches which included the influence of the geometric and material nonlinearity. According to the comparisons between earlier studies and results from finite-element analyses, new design equations should be developed for the new arches. New buckling factors were developed to consider influence of rise-to-span ratio and boundary conditions. It is found that the presented factors are sufficiently accurate to predict the inplane buckling loads of new type section steel arches subjected to uniformly distributed loading. The proposed equations can be used to investigate new type steel arches subjected to unsymmetrical loading and composited arches.

  • This paper describes the development of force limiting device(FLD). The FLD could induce compressive yield before occurring elastic buckling for slender member under compressive load. Therefore, it might prevent reduction of load carrying capacity by elastic buckling and the structures with the devices would behave stable. A new type of FLD reduced cross area is proposed in this study different to existing studies like as out of plane type, slit type and folded plate type. The parameters of specimens are depth, width and number of cutting. The structural capacity and characteristics of proposed types were verified by experiment and FEM analysis. The FLD of cutting type is efficient in compressive member.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis procedure and a characteristics for vibration and buckling of the cylinderical panels. The panels with simply-simply or simply-clamped edge supports are subjectes to circumferential compressive or flexural stresses. The differential equations governing vibration and buckling for these panels are derived by using the fundamental differential equation of the Love-Timoshenko and are solved numerically via the Galerkin method. The panel with simply-clamped edge supports is used a trigonometric function or a eigen function of a beam as a trial function and the effects of trial functions on numerical solutions are displayed. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effects of the flexural parameters in natural frequencies and coefficients of critical buckling and some typical mode shapes of vibration and buckling are also presented.

  • Elastic and nonlinear ultimate strength analyses were conducted to examine the effects of the stiffness and slenderness of flat-type stiffeners on ultimate in-plane strengths of a stiffened plate system. Although it is not feasible to consider local buckling in the stiffeners in elastic analysis, it was confirmed that the in-plane strengths of the stiffened plate system can be achieved by antisymmetric buckling mode when a certain level of stiffness in the stiffeners is provided. Nonlinear ultimate strength analysis, in which initial imperfection and residual stress are incorporated, showed that the ultimate strengths are sensitively affected by the mode shapes for initial imperfections. The slenderness limit for flat-type stiffeners in KHBDC (Korean Highway Bridge Design Code) was evaluated as conservative compared to the analysis results.

  • When arch ribs are subjected to vertical loading, they may buckle suddenly towards the in-plane direction. Therefore, the designer should consider their in-plane stability. In this paper, the in-plane elastic and inelastic buckling strength of parabolic, fixed arch ribs subjected to vertical distributed loading were investigated using the finite element method. A finite element model for the snap-through and inelastic behavior of arch ribs was verified using other researchers' test results. The ultimate strength of arch ribs was determined by taking into account their large deformation, material inelasticity, and residual stress. Finally, the finite element analysis results were compared with the EC3 design code.

  • In this study, we investigate a design technology intended to radically increase the buckling strength of vertically curved panels. Recent studies proposed a buckling strength formula which properly reflects the effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when they are stiffened by closed section ribs. Herein, we attempted to quantitatively evaluate this effect on curved panels and to reveal the correlations with the design parameters. The commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, was used to build a three dimensional numerical model and numerical parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the variation of the buckling strength. In the case of flat panels, the local buckling strength of stiffened curved panels increases proportionally with increasing rotational stiffness of the closed-section ribs. After attaining a limiting value, an obvious tendency was found that the local buckling strength of the stiffened curved panel would converge towards a fixed value when the panels are supported along both sides. The parametric studies performed using the influential design parameters confirmed that the estimated partially-restrained curved panel strength is well correlated with the proposed formula.
