  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the axial-flexural load-carrying capacity of concrete-encased and-filled steel tube (CEFT) columns. To restrain local buckling of longitudinal bars and to prevent premature failure of the thin concrete encasement, the use of U-cross ties was proposed. Five eccentrically loaded columns were tested by monotonic compression. The test parameters were axial-load eccentricity, spacing of ties, and the use of concrete encasement. Although early cracking occurred in the thin concrete encasement, the maximum axial loads of the CEFT specimens generally agreed with the strengths predicted considering the full contribution of the concrete encasement. Further, due to the effect of the circular steel tube, the CEFT columns exhibited significant ductility. The applicability of current design codes to the CEFT columns was evaluated in terms of axial-flexural strength and flexural stiffness.

  • Concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) have been used in civil engineering practices as a column of buildings and a bridge pier. CFTs have several advantages over the conventional reinforced concrete columns, such as rapid construction, enhanced buckling resistance, and inherited confinement effect. However, CFT component have not been widely used in civil engineering practice, since the design provisions among codes significantly vary each other. It leads to conservative design of CFT component. In this study, the design provisions of AISC and EC4 for CFT component were examined, based on the extensive test results conducted by previous researchers and finite element analysis results obtained in this study. Especially, the focus was made on the validation of P-M interaction curves proposed by AISC and EC4. From the results, it was found that the current design codes considerably underestimated the strength of CFT component under general combined axial load and bending. Finally, the modified P-M interaction curve was proposed and successfully verified.

  • Strain Energy Hinge(SEH) has been used in Korea Multi-purpose Satellite(KOMPSAT) series to deploy the solar panel due to the good record of reliability. However, when it reached a desired deployment position, a large buckling force is applied to the main body. This may cause structural damage and also affect control of the satellite. Therefore, reliable dynamic analysis for the deployment system is required at a design stage. Moreover, various mission of a satellite has made the size of solar panels got bigger, so elastic effect has to be considered seriously to get more precise analysis results. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method to predict the deployment is verified by KOMPSAT-2 deployment test.

  • In order to secure safety for the buckling and fracture of continuous welded rail and improve the efficiency of maintenance work, it is very important that grasp the characteristics of rail temperature. Recently, the maximum air temperature in summer season rises gradually and the minimum air temperature in winter season is decreasing gradually due to the climate change. Therefore, these phenomenon influences in the change amount of yearly rail temperature and can cause change of laying and maintenance temperature. In this study, actual measurement of rail temperature including climatic factors is carried out by constructing the temperature and climate measurement system as realistic as possible. Through the intensive investigation of actual data, it is founded that the existing prediction formulas for rail temperature may be used only in certain climatic conditions (certain combination of climatic factors). It may be more reasonable that the rail temperature considering actual climatic factors in site is predicted on probabilistic approach.

  • The study is concerned with the analysis of flanging as a sheet metal working process. In terms of mechanics, the flanging process can be divided into two groups, i.e, shrink flanging and stretch flanging. In this study, the shrink flanging process is analyzed by using the proposed energy criterion and the forming limit is found for the process. The forming limit for stretch flanging is also found by employing the neckind theory. Experiments are carried out for both processes. Approximate forming limits are obtained from the experiments. An approximate method to calculate the punch force is proposed and the computed results are compared with the experimental results. It is shown that there are good agreements in forming limits and punch forces between theory and experiments.

  • Modular structural systems have been used increasingly for low- and mid-rise structures such as school and apartment buildings. Studies have recently been conducted on the application of the modular structural system to high-rise buildings. To provide sufficient resistances and economical construction for the high-rise modular structural system, a composite unit modular structure was proposed. In this study, the strength of the non-symmetric composite column for the proposed composite unit modular structure was investigated through a series of tests. The experimental study focused on the effect of the slenderness of the column, eccentricity, and through bars on the strength of such a column. Design equations for the non-symmetric column for a modular unit structure were also proposed. From the results, it was found that the proposed design equations provide reasonable strength prediction of the non-symmetric composite column for the modular unit structure.

  • Recently, the wind energy has been widely used as a renewable energy resource due to lack and environmental issues of the mostly used fossil fuel. This work is to develop a 500W class blade design of vertical axis wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. For this wind turbine a high efficiency and low noise turbine blade was designed with the proposing aerodynamic design procedure, and a light composite structure blade. Structural analyses were performed using the Finite Element Method and fatigue life of the designed blade is estimated. Finally, in order to check its performance, the manufactured blade was tested by using truck and the results of test was good with respect to its analysis result.

  • The stability analysis for CWR is difficult in the theory itself because both geometric and material nonlinearity should be considered. Also the analysis results are varied according to the loading history. In contrast to the complexity in the theory, the analysis results for CWR on the railway bridges are quite simple and can be predicted because of a small buckling effect and its negligible nonlinearity. In this study, refined nonlinear analysis methods for the stability analysis of CWR on the railway bridges were developed which consider only material nonlinearity beeause the effects of geometric nonlinearity are nominal. In this study, the analysis results can be found within limited number of iterations with idealized linear force-displacement relationship. From the analysis result comparisons, it was found that the stability analysis for CWR on the railway bridges can be performed effectively by this method.

  • A numerical method has been developed for studying the dynamics of a flexible cylinder in a coaxial cylindrical duct, immersed in inviscid flow. The unsteady inviscid fluid-dynamic force acting on the oscillating cylinder has been estimated more rigorously by means of a spectral collocation method without simplification of governing equations. This numerical approach is applicable to the system haying wider annular gap and/or shorter length of cylinder as compared to existing potential theory. The governing equation of the unsteady flow was obtained from Laplace equation. The equation of cylinder motion coupled with the fluid motion was discretized by Galerkin's method, from which the dynamic behaviour of the system has been evaluated. The effect of the length of the cylinder and the annular gap on the critical flour velocity, where the system loses stability by buckling, was investigated. To validate the numerical method, the potential flow theory developed by Hobson based on thin film approximation has been improved. Typical results of the present numerical theory on the dynamics and stability of the system are compared with those of available existing theory and the present approximate results. Good agreement was found between the results. It was also found that a nondimensional critical flow velocity becomes larger as increasing the annular gap and decreasing the length of cylinder.

  • The repeated loading responses of four shear-critical reinforced concrete beams with two different shear span-to-depth ratios, were studied. One series of beams was reinforced using pairs of bundled stirrups with $90^{\circ}$ standard hooks, haying free end extensions of $6d_b$. The companion beams contained shear reinforcement made with larger diameter headed bars anchored with 50mm diameter circular heads. A single headed bar had the same area as a pair of bundled stirrups and hence the two series were comparable. The test results indicate that beams containing headed bar stirrups have a superior performance to companion beams containing bundled standard stirrups with improved ductility, larger energy absorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. Due to splitting of the concrete cover and local crushing, the hooks of the standard stirrups opened resulting in loss of anchorage. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by reducing the tension stiffening to account for repeated load effects.
