A number of perforated plates are utilized for the passage of the crew and the equipment, reducing weight and the arrangement of piping. Hull girders in double bottom and floor plates are the typical parts which have those plates in a ship structure, and the perforated plate is usually positioned at the place which has less loading without local strength problems. In the case of utilizing the plate inevitably at the place which has large strength, an opening of the plate has large effect on the buckling strength due to in-plane rigidity and ultimate strength. Therefore the assessments of the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength for the perforated plate are the essential requirements for determining the dimensions of the parts at the initial design stage. With above reason, a need of the reasonable assessments for the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength has evolved. The numerical series analysis with the consideration of the effect due to various aspect ratios and slenderness ratios were performed using finite element method in this research. Simple formulas for the design are also proposed from the above analysis.

This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams subjected to uniformly distributed load and end moments. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) and a regression program MINITAB(2006) were used to analytically develop new design equation for singly and doubly stepped beams with simple boundary condition. The flanges of the smaller cross-section in the stepped beams were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of the beams were kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered with analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995) and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The comparisons between results from proposed equations and the results from finite element analyses were presented in this paper. The maximum differences of two results are of 13% for the doubly stepped beam and 10% for the singly stepped beam. The proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

New design equations for calculating the lateral-torsional buckling moment resistances of singly stepped I-section beams subjected to general loading on the top flange are suggested based on the investigations of elastic finite-element analyses. The new equations presented in this study are compared with current moment gradient modifiers presented by other researchers and specifications. The study considered almost loading cases on buildings and bridges. The proposed equations should be easily used to calculate the lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance of stepped I-beams.

Plate girders with variable depths have been often used at piers considering not only the economy but also an aesthetic aspect. Tapered plate girders exhibit more complicated behaviors than prismatic girders especially under shear. However, a comprehensive design method for the determination of the shear strength has yet to be developed mainly due to lack of study. In this study, investigated is the buckling and ultimate behaviors of tapered plate girders subjected to shear through finite element analyses. From the analysis results, a simple design formula is suggested for the evaluation of the shear strength of tapered plate girders.
This study numerically investigates buckling behavior of press braked steel plates with a free edge that consists of the upper flange of U-shaped box girder. Since the press-braked plates include a rounded edge, the effective width to thickness ratio of the press-braked upper flange is obscure to determine the nominal compressive strength. This study performed 3D finite element analyses to evaluate an equivalent effective width of cold-formed plate with a free edge. Through the parametric numerical analyses, the elastic buckling stresses of the rounded corner plates were compared with those of general flat plates and then, the equivalent effective width has been estimated. A comparative study with Euler buckling formula speculated in the domestic design specifications has been conducted.

Generally, structural plates under axial compression should be stiffened by longitudinal stiffeners in order to enhance the buckling strength. Though U-shaped ribs would be more efficient for the stiffened plate system, there is in the absence of a proper design guides or relevant research results. Thus this study is aimed to examine the local buckling behavior of stiffened plates with U-section ribs. 3-dimensional analysis models which include 3 types of U-shaped longitudinal stiffeners were simulated by using the finite element code ABAQUS. The bifurcation analysis were conducted and then the buckling analysis results are compared with the theoretical equation values. It is found that the rotational constraint effect provided by the U-ribs should increase the local buckling strength. Some features drawn from a series of parametric study results are summarized.

Stepped I-beams having increased moment of inertia at one end (singly stepped beam) or both ends (doubly stepped beams) can often be seen in construction of bridges due to material economy and easy fabrication of the section. This paper presents the results of the parametric study of lateral torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams with constant depth subjected to uniform moment. Design recommendations were made based on the finite element results of the models having different combinations of monosymmetric ratio, stepped length ratio, flange thickness ratio and flange width ratio. The proposed approximation is acceptable based on the parameters given having mostly conservative results. The proposed equation can be further used to extend the study to different loading conditions.
In this paper, a discrete optimum design program was developed using the refined fuzzy-genetic algorithms based on the genetic algorithms and the fuzzy theory. The optimum design in this study can perform section and shape optimization simultaneously for planar and spatial steel structures. In this paper, the objective function is the weight of steel structures and the constraints are the design limits defined by the design and buckling strengths, displacements, and thicknesses of the member sections. The design variables are the dimensions and coordinates of the steel sections. Design examples are given to show the applicability of the discrete optimum design using the improved fuzzy-genetic algorithms in this study.

In this study, lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) strength of high-strength H-beams built up from 800MPa tensile-strength steel was experimentally and analytically evaluated according to current lateral stability provisions (KBC 2009, AISC-LRFD 2010). The motivation was to evaluate whether or not current LTB provisions, which were originally developed for ordinary steel with different stress-strain characteristics, are still applicable to high-strength steel. Two sets of compact-section specimens with relatively low (Set A) or high (Set B) warping stiffness were prepared and tested under uniform moment loading. Laterally unbraced lengths of the test specimens were controlled such that inelastic LTB could be induced. All specimens exhibited LTB strength exceeding the minimum limit required by current provisions by a sufficient margin. Moreover, some specimen in Set A reached a rotation capacity required for plastic design, although its laterally unbraced length belonged to the inelastic LTB range. All the test results indicated that extrapolation of current provisions to high-strength steel is conservative. In order to further analyze the test results, the relationship between inelastic moment and laterally unbraced length was also derived in explicit form for both ordinary- and high-strength steel based on the effective tangent modulus of inelastic section. The analytical relationship derived again showed that extrapolation of current laterally unbraced length limit leads to a conservative design in the case of high-strength steel and that the laterally unbraced length to control the inelastic LTB behavior of high-strength steel beam should be specified by including its unique post-yield strain-hardening characteristics.
In this study buckling behavior of orthotropic plate with a longitudinal stiffener under in-plane linearly distributed loads is investigated. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and the stiffener is considered as a beam element. For the equation of buckling analysis Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. The upper limit of the critical stress at various location of stiffener is determined by using Lagrangian multiplier method. Buckling analysis is performed for the various position of stiffener and for the various width ratios between plate and stiffener. The parametric study shows that, when four edges of plate are simply supported, the most effective position for a longitudinal stiffener is at the location of which the upper limit of the stress is the maximum.
