  • The object of this study was the climate change sensitivity assessment of Korean Fir and Khinghan Fir as a representative subalpine plant in South Korea. Using species distribution models, we predicted the probability of current and future species distribution. According to this study, potential distribution that have been predicted based on the threshold (MTSS) is, Khinghan Fir was higher loss rate than Korean Fir. And in the climate change sensitivity assessment using the scalar sensitivity weight ($W_{is}$), $W_{is}$ of Korean Fir was higher relatively than the sensitivity of Khinghan Fir. When using the species distribution models as shown in this study may vary depending on the probability of presence data and spatial variables. Therefore should be prior decision studies on the ecological environment of the study species. Based on this study, if it is domestic applicable climate change sensitivity assessment method is developed. it would be important decision-making to climate change and biological diversity of adaptation policy.

  • Genetic diversity and relationships within and among Korean, Japanese and Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans based on SSR markers were evaluated to enlarge genetic variation in soybean breeding in the future. A total of 184 wild soybeans including 67 Korean, 71 Japanese and 46 Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans were analyzed to evaluate genetic diversity and relationships based on 23 SSR markers. Korean and Japanese wild soybeans were obtained from National Agrobiodiversity Center, Korea, and Biological Resource Center in Lotus and Glycine, Frontier Science Research Center, University of Miyazaki, Japan, respectively. Chinese wild soybeans were collected from Jilin province, China. Twenty three SSR markers generated a total of 964 alleles with an average of 41.9 alleles per marker. Number of alleles ranged from 23 (Satt635) to 56 (Satt157). Genetic diversity (PIC value) of 184 wild soybeans ranged from 0.880 to 0.968 with an average of 0.945. Number of alleles for Korean, Japanese and Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans was 513 with an average of 22.3, 511 with an average of 22.2, and 312 with an average of 13.6 per marker, respectively. PIC value for Korean, Japanese and Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans was similar with an average of 0.905, 0.897, and 0.850, respectively. Cluster analysis based on genetic distances estimated by SSR markers classified wild soybeans into 3 clusters. Cluster I included only Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans. Cluster II included most of Japanese wild soybeans including 5 Korean wild soybeans. Cluster III included most of Korean wild soybeans including 6 Japanese and 1 Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans. Cluster I was not subclassified, but cluster II and III were subclassified into various groups. Genetic distance evaluated by SSR markers between Korean and Japanese wild soybeans was closer than that of between Korean and Chinese Jilin provincial, and between Japanese and Chinese Jilin provincial wild soybeans.

  • Ontogenetic food habits of the four most abundant fish species in seagrass neadows of Redfish Bay, Texas, were examined quantitatively during 1982-1983. The darter goby (Gobionellus bolelsoma) and pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) were trophic generalists, which used a wide range of food items. The darter goby had relatively diverse, omnivorous diet which included amphipods, copepods, polychaetes, filamentous algae, diatoms, and detritus. This species did not show distinct ontogenetic changes in foodpreferences. Unlike the darter goby, the pinfish showed ontogenetic progression of four feeding stages. An initial feeding stage was a planktivorous stage in which copepods were int major food items, followed by a carnivorous stage in which amphipods became the major food items, an omnivorous stage in which filamentous algae, diatoms, amphipods, and polychaetes were the major food items, and finally a herbivorous stage in which seagrass pieces with attached epiphytes and their debris were the major food items. The code goby (Gobiosoma robustrm) and Gulf pipefish (Syngathus scovelli) appeared to be relatively specialized in food havits as carnivorous. Similar ontogenetic changes in food habits were observed for these two species, i.e.initially, copepods were the major food items, followed by a gradual transition to amphipods with growth.

  • The trends of plant-related teaching and learning of elementary and secondary schools were presented in this paper. The textbooks of other subject matters except biology were analyzed for their plant-related learning contents. It was suggested that interconnection exists between biology and other subjects in the relations with plant-related learning materials. A total of 331 books were analyzed from 143 elementary schools, 117 middle schools and 71 high schools. 1. Among the learning materials, 264 species of plant were presented in elementary schools textbooks, 295 in middle schools, and 283 in high schools. Other subjcets had more various plants than biology. 2. Korean language, social study and home ecology had more plant materials than other subjects with not only simple citation but scientific concepts and inquiry activities. As this plant-related materials is considerable for school education and science curriculum. 3. The available plants in daily life - resource plants, edible plants, demonstration plants and engineering-related plants - were cited in other subjects. Interconnection of plant-related materials with biology and other subjects will provide basis of STS education and subject integration.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of fish communities and river health in the Sincheon stream of Imgin River between April and October 2019. The survey collected 3,677 objects in 30 species belonging to 12 families from 23 survey stations. The dominant and subdominant species were Zacco platypus (28.4%) and Oryzias sinensis (13.6%), respectively, followed by Z. koreanus (11.8%), Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (11.7%), Carassius auratus (9.6%), and Pseudorasbora parva (7.9%) in that order. Among the fish species collected, 10 (33.3%) were endemic species in Korea. The exotic species were 5 (16.7%), including Micropterus salmoides, Lepomis macrochirus, Cyprinus carpio (Israeli type), Poecilia reticulata, and Xiphophorus maculatus. The land-locked species included Cottus koreanus and Rhinogobius brunneus, while C. koreanus was a climate change-sensitive species. The dominance of the fish community was low, and the diversity was high in the Sincheon mainstream, Sudongcheon and Cheongdamcheon, whereas Dongducheon and Sangpaecheon showed higher dominance and low diversity. The river health was very good and good in the uppermost and Sudongcheon areas, whereas the upper stream was normal, and the middle and lower streams were poor and very poor, respectively. The water quality was also mostly poor or very poor from the midstream to the downstream, and only Sudongcheon was very good. Therefore, the water quality had a great impact on fish habitat and eventually affected river health significantly. Although the water quality of Shincheon has improved each year, the introduction of several foreign species had a very negative effect. Improvement of river health in Shincheon requires water quality improvement and management of exotic fish species.

  • In order to investigate the distribution and species composition of fish in shallow wetlands that might be affected by environmental factors, we investigated the physicochemical parameters, macrophytes biomass, and fish assemblage in 24 shallow wetlands in South Korea from May to June, 2012. In this study, a total of 20 fish species were identified, and Cypinidae were found to be the most dominant species. Physicochemical parameters and macrophyte biomass were different in the survey sites, and macrophytes biomass, in particular, showed a positive relationship with fish abundance in stepwise multiple regression (df=1, F=32.00, P=0.001). According to the result of the cluster analysis between survey sites, the survey sites were divided into three groups in accordance with species composition of fish in relation to macrophytes biomass. In the wetlands of the first group, Lepomis macrochirus which belongs to Centrarchidae was found to be dominant and other fish assemblages were hardly seen. In the second group, unlike the first group, Carassius auratus that belongs to Cypinidae was found to be dominant. In the third group, Lepomis macrochirus was found to be as dominant as the first group but various other fish species appeared. Where there was abundance of the main food sources (i. e. zooplankton) of fish in the survey sites, there were more diverse macrophyte biomass. Consequently, it is proven that macrophytes strongly affect the species composition and abundance of fish, and high biomass of macrophytes support high assemblage of fish. Based on these results, we recommend establishing diverse aquatic macrophytes communities when restoring or creating wetlands to assure high diversity of fish species that use macrophytes as their habitat.

  • The slender shinner (Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa), a tiny freshwater fish of about 8 to 10 cm belonging to Cyprinidae, is an endangered species found only in the Han and Imjin Rivers on the Korean Peninsula. During the breeding season, this species spawns in nests of Coreoperca herzi, a predator of this species, or small crevices on rocks. This unique reproductive ecology can make this species more vulnerable to anthropogenic perturbance that can further limit the places to spawn. Here, mtDNA and microsatellite loci were analyzed to identify the genetic diversity and structure of slender shinners and further to provide the basic data necessary for the conservation planning of this species. A total of 28 polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed using Illumina paired-end sequencing, and 67 slender shinners collected from three localities in the Han River were genotyped using these loci. This species showed a remarkably high level of genetic diversity with mean expected heterozygosity of 0.914 and mean allele number per locus of 27.9, and no signature of drastic demographic decline was detected. As a result of our microsatellite analysis, the genetic structure between the two stems of the Han River, North Han and South Han, was prominent. Such a genetic structure was also evident in the sequence analysis of 14 haplotypes obtained from mtDNA control region. Although slender shinners are only found in very limited areas around the world, the genetic structure indicates that there is a block of gene flow among the populations, which should be reviewed in the future if management and restoration of this species is needed.
