  • Agricultural ecosystem is recognized as a space for providing a variety of services, in addition to the food production that it originally encompassed, such as water purification, biological habitat, air purification, soil conservation, and landscape development. The construction of greenhouses in agricultural landscapes can cause deterioration of ecosystem services because of the increase of impermeable area and loss of biological habitats. This study aimed to compare insect diversity between different types of constructed greenhouses and paddy ecosystems. The target study area was selected by considering the distribution status of horticultural complexes and was classified as Single Vinyl Greenhouse, Multi Vinyl Greenhouse or Glass Greenhouse and they were compared with four paddies. The study locations were in Gu-Mi, Bu-Yeo, Ginje and Jin-Ju. A total of 2,333 individual insects belonging to 9 orders, 38 families, 76 genus, and 80 species were collected. The composition of orders was Hemiptera (22.37%), Coleoptera (18.42%), Hymenoptera (14.47%), Orthoptera (11.84%), and Diptera (10.53%). The average number of collected species were in the order Paddy (39.38 species) > Single Vinyl Greenhouse (35.50 species) > Multi Vinyl Greenhouse (22.50 species) > Glass Greenhouse (24.00 species). The Diversity Index (H') was Paddy (4.76) > Single Vinyl Greenhouse (4.57) > Multi Vinyl Greenhouse (4.12), and Glass Greenhouse (4.12). The Richness Index (RI) was Paddy (7.72) and Single Vinyl Greenhouse (7.03) > Multi Vinyl Greenhouse (4.99) and Glass Greenhouse (5.32). From our results, it can be seen that the biological diversity features of insects decreased when greenhouses are constructed. However, Single Vinyl Greenhouse is noted to promote insect diversity more than that by Multi Vinyl Greenhouse and Glass Greenhouse. Hence, when constructing greenhouses, it is necessary to consider insect habitat to conserve insect diversity.

  • The natural monument forests (no.374) located at Pyeongdae-ri in Jeju island are described and classified by using phytosociological methods and numerical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to identify the ecological character of Torreya nucifera forests between natural habitat and artificial habitat, as well as their spatial and phytogeographical distribution in the Korea. The comparison of forests between Pyeongdae-ri and other regions was analyzed by using a non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) and hierarchical clustering. On the basis of the 12 phytosociological $relev{\acute{e}}s$, the vegetation of T. nucifera dominant forest in Jeju island was arranged in one syntaxon (Alangium platanifolium-Torreya nucifera community included typicum and one subcommunity) within Camellietea. The community of T. nucifera dominant forests were characterized floristically and ecologically. We discussed diagnostic species with references, and proposed a few important diagnostic species (Ilex crenata for. microphylla, Acer palmatum, Zingiber mioga, Mercurialis leiocarpa, Osmorhiza aristata, Mecodium wrightii etc.) to explain condition of the habitat and synecological character. The communities were described by concerning their edaphical and syndynamical niche; we discussed their total distribution in Korea. In most forests they are widespread in Korean peninsular and their distribution is primarily determined by artificial plantation and periodical management. The forests consisted of T. nucifera have developed from natural environment element and artificial management. As a result they have very unique characters with the floristic, structural characterization and distribution. Furthermore, we identified that they need to apposite management for sustainability.

  • The present investigation was carried out to determine the qualitative difference between 4 varieties of perilla leaves cultivated Miryang area, particularly focusing on the amino acid composition and flavor compounds. Aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, arginine, and threonine were the major amino acids, and tyrosine and cysteine and methionine containing sulfur were detected as little amount in protein of all perilla leaves. All perilla leaves contained about 34 kinds of free amino acids, and the major free amino acids were same as the protein bound amino acids. However, no significant difference among 4 varieties of perilla leaves was observed in the profiles of protein bound and free amino acids composition. Flavor compounds analyzed by GC-MSD following to extraction of flavor by SDE (Simultaneous Steam Distillation-Extraction) were detected as 51 kinds from 'Leafy perilla 1', 47 kinds from 'Yupsil perilla', 46 kinds from 'Miryang 9' and 'YCPL. The major volatile compound was perilla ketone, its concentration was $145.75\;{\mu}g/g$ in 'Miryang 9', $187.00\;{\mu}g/g$ in 'YCPL', $301.59\;{\mu}g/g$ in 'Leafy perilla l' and $551.42\;{\mu}g/g$ in 'Yupsil perilla', but the other flavor compounds, 3-hexen-l-ol, trans-2-hexenal, $\beta-caryophyllene,\;\alpha-farnesene$ and etc, were less than $20\;{\mu}g/g$.

  • This is the study of the effects and changes on the ichthyofauna and fish community in Jeonju-cheon stream (located in Jeonju Cit, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea) after the implementation of the Natural Stream Restoration Project. The restoration of the stream was carried out between April 2000 and December 2002, and it covered the mid-section of the stream starting from the upstream of Hanbyeok Bridge down to Samcheon where branches of water join. It is 7.2 km long and passes through the downtown area. In this study, comparisons were made before and after the restoration. Before the restoration (1975 to 1999), the number of fish species collected from the Jeonju-cheon stream turned out to be 12 to 18 species, whereas after the restoration (2003 to 2008), it increased up to 34 species in total. Especially in the case of the middle and downstream sections running across the central regions of the city (Daga Bridge to Seosin Bridge), the number of fish species significantly increased from 5 species to 22 species. Such a dramatic increase of fish species appears to be directly related to the restoration of the stream which was designed to improve the quality of water by preventing polluted sewage water from running into the stream. Besides, the structure of stream bed which became more diversified into various components such as marshes and shallows, as well as rocks, Pebbles, sand and clay, also contributed to the increase of fish species.

  • In order to understand the seasonal variations of species composition of fish in the Goseong, middle East Sea of Korea, we surveyed fish fauna using set net during 2 years. In this study, a total of 77 taxa belonging to 40 families were collected and 75 species were identified. The dominant family were Tetraodontidae and Pleuronectidae, and the dominant species were Arctoscopus japonicus, Konosirus punctatus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Thamnaconus modestus, and Trachurus japonicus. The results of the hierarchical clustering using the number of individuals of collected species showed that they are divided into three seasonal groups: Group A (Jan.~Apr.), Group B (May~Jun., Nov.~Dec.), Group C (Jul.~Oct.). The sea surface temperature (SST) was higher than the results of previous studies in winter and spring, and species composition in spring have changed from cold-water species to the warm-water species, recently. The species composition has become similar to the that of southern Gangwon-do regions (Samcheok and Gangneung) of the previous studies. The species diversity of family Tetraodontidae has increased, which is estimated to have an effect on increase in SST and the quantity of entering the East Sea. Therefore, we assumed that the change of species composition is related to the extension of northern distribution limits and survival temperature, and abundant preys. Therefore, it is necessary that an efficient resource management policy as well as the ways of commercially use of migratory warm-water fish, rapidly.

  • A total of 33 fish species were collected by a small beam trawl from an eelgrass bed in Myoungjuri of Jindong Bay, Korea. The dominant fish species were Hexagrammos otakii, Pholis fangi, Repomucenus valenciennei, Pseudoblennus cottoides, Pholis nebulosa, Rudarius ercodes, Syngnathus schlegeli, and Sebastes schlegeli. These 8 fish species accounted for 79.5% of the total number of individuals collected. The fishes collected in the study area were primarily small fish species or juveniles of large fish species. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance were large; higher numbers of fish occurred from April to June 2002, while biomass was the highest in September 2001 and 2002. Seasonal changes in fish abundance corresponded with eelgrass biomass and abundance of food organisms.

  • This excperiment was conducted to investigate relation on seed dormancy and vi-viparous germination with sucrose content, fatty acid composition and abscisic acid content of rice seeds. The following results were obtained by this experiment. Sucrose content of brown rice harvested at 20 and 40 days after heading was higher in Japonica and Sare type varieties than in Tongil and Indica type rices. Positive relationship was found be-tween sucrose content of brown rice and viviparous germination rate of rice varieties tested.J aponica and Sare type rice varieties showed low proportion of oleic acid and higher proportion of linoleic acid in brown rice harvested at 20 and 40 days after heading than Tongil and Indica rices tested. Viviparous germination was negatively correlated with the proportion oleic acid and positively with that of linoleic acid. Abscisic acid content in hull of rice seeds stored for 30 days at 25/15$^{\circ}C$ fluctuation temperature condition was decreased more rapidly than 4$^{\circ}C$, and Japonica varieties tested showed lower con-tent of abscisic acid in rice hull than Tongil and Indica varieties used.
