In the course of study for the development of functional food ingredients from seaweeds having useful biological activities, the in-vitro antioxidant and nitrite scavenging activities of the methanol extracts prepared from 35 different seaweeds (17 phaeophyta, 11 rhodophyta and 7 chlorophyta) were determined. At $500\;{\mu}g/ml$ concentration of the methanol extracts, Ecklonia cava, Ecklonia stolonifera, Eisenia bicyclis (Kjellman) Setchell, Ishige foliacea, I. okamurai, Sargassum confusum, S. fulvellum, S. yamade and Zostera marina showed 60% more DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity. The exceptions were found in I. okamurai and Z. marina, which showed 45% and 53% ABTS scavenging activity, respectively. The correlation coefficient between DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities was 0.855, suggesting that the 9 different seaweeds extracts could scavenge anion and cation radicals concurrently. In reducing power, only E.cava, E.stolonifera and E.bicyclis showed above 0.88 ($Abs_{700}$). In a while, in nitrite scavenging activity at $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ concentration of the methanol extracts, 19 different seaweeds extracts including I. foliacea, I. okamurai, S. confusum, S. fulvellum, and S. yamade showed 60% more activity. Calculation of $IC_{50}s$ of DPPH, ABTS and nitrite scavenging activities of 9 different seaweeds extracts further showed that I. foliacea and S. yamade, besides E.cava, E.stolonifera and E.bicyclis, have strong antioxidant and nitrite scavenging activity. These results suggest that the selected 9 different seaweeds could be developed as functional food ingredients and I. foliacea and S. yamade have potential as novel natural sources of antioxidant and nitrite scavenger.

Macrobenthic community was studied at 87 stations including intertidal and subtidal area in Yoja Bay, south coast of Korea in summer season of July 2001. Duplicate sediment samples were taken using a van Veen grab ($0.1m^2$) in each station. Mud facies of the sediments were widly distributed in the bay. And relatively high content of sand was shown in the Bulgyo-cheon stream estuary. A total of 274 species was occurred with a mean density of $2,346ind./m^2$ and a mean biomass of $78.2g/m^2$. The polychaetes were species- and density-dominant faunal group with a total of 122 species (44.5% of the total number of species), and mean density of $1,543ind./m^2$ (65.8% of the mean density). Meanwhile, molluscs were biomass-dominant faunal group with $44.4g/m^2$. Bio-Env. analysis showed that the combination of bottom salinity and sand content of the surface sediments was highly correlated to the major macrobenthic communities. The macrobenthic species number, decreasing toward inner bay from mouth of the bay, was significantly correlated to the sediment environmental variables and bottom water salinity. The spatial distribution of abundance showed significant correlation to the sand and mud contents and mean grain size of the surface sediments. Major dominant species were Minuspio japonica (polychaete) with a mean density of $1,167ind./m^2$ at upper part of the bay where salinity was low and Eriopisella sechellensis (amphipod) with $152ind./m^2$ in central part of the bay. Species diversity (H') was $3.0{\leq}$ in the mouth part of the bay and ranged 2.0-3.0 in the inner part of the bay, which showed a significant positive correlation to bottom salinity. Total number of species also showed significant correlations to the sediment composition and bottom salinity. Based on the cluster analysis the macrobenthic community of the bay was classified into five station groups from the bay mouth toward the inner part of the bay depending on the species composition. From the SIMPER analysis Minuspio japonica, Eriopisella sechellensis and Sternaspis scutata mainly contributed to the classification of station group. These results suggested that the macrobenthic communities of the bay were mainly influenced by bottom salinity together with sediment composition, and that the studies of spatial distributions of major dominant species and benthic communities should be conducted continuously to monitor the Yeoja Bay benthic environment.
This study was investigated to review the potentials of irritation and skin sensitization of active ingredients and end-use products of pesticides for pesticide registration, prediction of irritation and sensitization, and data requirements for other purposes. Pesticide irritation and sensitization referred to the Pesticide Manual(14th edition), while toxicity was evaluated based on the data submitted by the pesticide registrant. Totally 148 active ingredients and 149 end-use products were analyzed to compare the positive response, formulation type, and correlation between active ingredients and products. Among active ingredients, ratio of positive response to skin irritation, eye irritation, and skin sensitization were 18.8, 47.0 and 20.6% respectively. While, positive response to skin irritation, eye irritation, and skin sensitization of the products were 14.9, 38.9 and 23.6%, respectively. Emulsifiable concentrate showed the highest positive response among formulation types showing skin irritation 31.3%, eye irritation 81.3%, and skin sensitization 31.3%. On the other hand granule type showed the lowest response with skin 4.8, eye 14.3 and sensitization 14.8%. There was no correlation by active ingredient content on irritation and sensitization of products. However, both active ingredients and products showed same positive response were skin 73.1%, skin sensitization 66.2%, and eye irritation 44.7%. By the these results, correlation between technical grade of active ingredients and end-use products would be use for pesticide management at the screening stage, especially skin irritation and skin sensitization.
The Dalbatjae-Birobong ridge forest in Mt. Sobaek area was studied to investigate forest community structure. Twenty 20m $\times$ 25m plots were set up in the studied ridge forest along altitude of 770m to 1,410m and vegetation analysis for tree stratum of the trees above 1cm DBH was carried out. The leading dominant tree species were Pinus densiflora in the lower elevation and Quercus mongolica in the higher elevation. According to importance value and cluster analysis, the studied ridge forest was classified into four forest communities of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community. Quercus mongolica community and Quercus mongolica-deciduous tree species community. According to importance value of major tree species in canopy and understory, the present community type seems to continue for a relatively long time. Species diversity of Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica community and Quercus mongolica-deciduous tree species community were 0.6791, 0.6850, 0.5296 and 0.7136, respectively.
We studied concentrations of trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper, lead and cadmium in three shorebird species from Saemankeum mudflat, Korea$(1999{\sim}2000)$, and also analysed correlations between elements in livers. Iron(ANOVA, p=0.018), copper(ANOVA, p=0.043), lead(ANOVA, p=<0.001) and cadmium (ANOVA, p=0.016) concentrations significantly differed among shorebird species, but zinc concentrations wasn't different among species. We suggested that iron, zinc, and copper concentrations were within a range for normal and are maintained by normal homeostatic mechanisms for wild birds. Lead concentrations in Great Knots Calidris tenuirostris$(5.76{\pm}2.14{\mu}g/dry\;g)$ were at the background level but Red-necked Stints Calidris ruficollis$(29.4{\pm}10.6{\mu}g/dry\;g)$ and Terek Sandpipers Xenus sinereus$(15.9{\pm}11.9{\mu}g/dry\;g)$ were within the exposed level for wild birds. In particular, Red-necked Stints were nearly poisoned level. Cadmium concentrations in Terek Sandpipers and Great Knots were at the background concentration, but Red-necked Stints were greater than the poisoned level$(3{\mu}g/dry\;g)$. We found significantly correlations between lead and cadmium concentrations, but other elements didn't find.
This study investigated flexural properties of indirect Gum-shade composite resins for esthetic improvement. The material utilized in this study was Crea.lign, Twiny flow and Twiny paste (TP). Ten specimens were fabricated with a dimension of $25{\times}2{\times}2mm$ according to the ISO 4049. After fabrications, specimens were stored in the distilled water for 24 hours at the temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. Three-point bending test was performed in universal testing machine (Instron 3344; Instron, USA) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until the failure occurred. TP exhibited a higher flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) compared to the flowable materials. There were significant differences among the three materials in FS and FM. However, there was no significant difference in work of fracture (WOF) in all tested materials (p>0.05). In Weibull analysis, TP showed the greatest Weibull modulus which means a higher reliability of the materials. Also, Gum-shade composite resins revealed a strong correlation in all flexural properties. There was a positive correlation in FS-FM ($r^2=0.99$) and a negative correlation between FS-WOF and FM-WOF ($r^2>0.97$). Therefore, this confirmed that flexural property was important for mechanical behavior evaluation and useful information. To addition, this improved among mechanical properties correlation of materials as important factor.
This study was conducted to clarify the community characteristics of wintering waterbirds in Geum River from September, 2011 to March, 2012 (1st) and from September, 2012 to March, 2013 (2nd). 63 species of waterbirds including raptors were observed during the survey. 50 species of 188,673 individuals recorded during the first survey, and 56 species of 116,611 individuals were recorded during the second survey. The dominant species was high dominance dabbling ducks by Baikal Teals, Mallards, Spot-billed Ducks, Greater White-fronted Geese, Black-tailed Gulls and Common Shelducks. We classified the wintering waterbirds into 9 taxa based on the similar ecological characteristics and analyzed the correlation with temperature. As a result, dabbling ducks, diving ducks and raptors showed positive correlation and herons and waders showed negative correlation. Geese, swans and dabbling ducks were high habitat utilization ratio at the Geumgang estuary barrage upstream area, and diving ducks, herons, waders and gulls were high habitat utilization ratio at the Geumgang estuary barrage downstream area.
