The Moderate Effect of the Religious Fundamentalism on Religious Orientations and Subjective Well-being (종교지향과 주관적 웰빙의 관계에 대한 종교적 원리주의의 조절효과)

  • This study aims to investigate how religious orientation of college students and the religious fundamentalism are related to their subjective well-being, and the interaction of religious orientations and the religious fundamentalism on their well-being. The participants were 374 college students who studies at an university located in Seoul, whose average of age were 22.54 (SD=4.79). The psychological tests used in this research included the following: I/E-R, the Religious Fundamentalism Scale, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Emotion Frequency Test, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Subjective Happiness Scale, Life Satisfaction Motivation Scale, and Life Satisfaction Expectancy Scale. Although religious students experienced more religious well-being than non-religious students, their subjective well-being were not higher than those of non-religious students. Results reveal that religious orientations were positively related to subjective well-being such as life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and positive emotions, as well as spiritual well-being. However, those covariance was approximately 4~6% only. Religious fundamentalism was also positively related to spiritual well-being and life satisfaction, it was negatively related to the motivation to live though. On the other hand, moderate effects of the religious fundamentalism on the relations of religious orientations to most of subjective well-being variables. Results of simple main effect analyses indicated that the students who were strongly oriented toward religion with higher religious fundamentalism showed significantly higher existential well-being, positive emotions, life satisfaction, subjective happiness, and especially their motivation and expectation for future life, whereas there were no significant differences in subjective well-being of students with lower religious fundamentalism by religious orientation. This finding suggests that some religiosity variables could affect human well-being with interactions

A Study on the Possibility of 'World Religion' in Daesoon Jinrihoe (대순진리회의 '세계종교' 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • Daesoon Jinrihoe tends to be perceived as a 'nationalistic religion' by both internal members of the religious body and outside scholars of religious studies. However, the character of this particular nationalistic religion is rather complex. On top of emphasizing the special status of the Korean ethnic group while focusing on nationalism as a nationalistic religion, Daesoon Jinrihoe futrther asserts an implication of the universality of world religion aiming to bring relief to humankind and the world. This dynamic is one of the specificity of nationalistic religion and also the universality of world religion. However, this dual logic of specificity and universality is not characteristic of only Daesoon Jinrihoe. Many religions in the world have also exhibited duplicity as nationalistic religions and world religions. And this thesis pays attention to Sectarian Shinto as it formed in modern Japan. Kyoha Shinto formed when the modern Japanese government established the national Shinto system which had a total of 13 sects. Most of them do not only call themselves a nationalistic religion, inheriting the ethnic tradition of Japanese people, but also jump into overseas missionary work. This started during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars. With that in mind, how did the overseas missionary work of Sectarian Shinto aspire for status as a world religion while maintaining their identities as nationalistic religions? Furthermore, how did their movements fare in their efforts to become world religions? Thus, this thesis aims to examine the possibility Daesoon Jinrihoe becoming a world religion through some cases of Sectarian Shinto that showed the duplicity as nationalistic religions and world religions. Also, this thesis makes suggestions regarding the future direction of Daesoon Jinrihoe. As such, this paper aims to review the new direction of Daesoon Jinrihoe as it stands on the borderline between being a nationalistic religion and a world religion. This is done by examining the historical flow of theory regarding 'nationalistic religion' or 'minjung religion' which have long been discussed in Korean society. Also examined is the case of Won Buddhism which likewise aims to simultaneosuly be both a nationalistic religion in Korea and a world religion abroad.

心なおしによる平和 -現代日本の新宗教の平和主義-

  • 일본의 종교계는 2001년에 일어난 미국에서의 동시다발적 테러사건 이후, 적극적으로 평화를 위한 활동에 뛰어 들었다. 가령 뉴욕에 본부를 두고 있는 세계종교자 평화회의(WCRP)는 일본 종교교단들이 상당히 깊숙이 관여하고 있는 세계적 규모의 종교협력단체로서, 미국에 의한 보복공격의 억제를 꾸준히 그리고 강력하게 호소해 왔다. 1970년에 설립된 이 세계종교자 평화회의의 설립자 가운데 한 사람이자, 30여년에 걸쳐 지도적인 역할을 수행해 온 인물로서 입정교성회(立正佼成會)의 개조인 니와노 닛쿄(庭野日敬)를 들 수 있다. 니와노는 1930년에 법화경에 의한 선조 공양의 가르침을 깨달은 후, 불교의 핵심이 이타행 실천에 있다고 가르치면서 열심히 포교활동을 계속해 왔다. 1950년대 이후에는 종교협력과 사회참여에 적극적으로 전념했으며, 그 결과 입정교성회의 종교활동 전체 속에 평화운동이 큰 부분을 차지하게 되었다. 니와노는 불교의 가르침이야말로 평화를 실현하기 위한 핵심적인 사상을 담고 있다고 설한다. 즉 자연과 타자 사이에 조화로운 관계가 유지되도록 평화의 마음을 실현해야 한다는 가르침이 그것이다. 특히 분노와 질투와 공격적인 마음을 가지지 말며, 자비의 마음으로 타자를 대면하는 것이 중요하다는 것이다. 그는 이것이 우주 본래의 실재와 합치함으로써 가능하다고 주장한다. 이처럼 모든 것이 일치할 수 있다고 굳게 믿는 니와노는 종교협력이 평화실현에 있어 중요한 방법이라고 간주한다. 그런데 니와노가 '평화주의국가 일본'이라는 이념에 많은 부분을 의거하고 있기는 하지만, 이런 이념이 과거의 전쟁에 대한 일본의 충분한 반성에 입각한 것인지는 의문의 여지가 있다. 나아가 그는 상이한 종교간의 일치 가능성에 대해 다소 낙관적이며, 또한 불교와 동양사상이 평화를 지향한다는 이해에 대한 비판적인 성찰이 미약하다는 한계를 안고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 일본의 민속적 종교토양에서 생겨난 종교적 평화주의의 이상 및 실천으로서, 니와노 닛쿄와 입정교성회에 대해서는 충분히 검토해 볼 만한 가치가 있다고 여겨진다.

  • In this paper, a new viewpoint and practical education method were presented on educational culture related to today's religions and media. For this purpose, this paper considered the theories of religious media pedagogic and the concept of symbo1ic didactics relating to religious symbols in popular culture. In this paper, a total of eight cases of applying symbolic didactics were developed using the example of "The Da Vinci Code", based on the theoretical framework of religious media education and symbolic didactics. For this, the education methods and contents of religious media education were integrated with the teaching plan model of "action and development oriented media education". In order for this education to be applied effectively, experimental studies have to be carried out verifying the learning effects regarding this education. In particular, education for teachers who will tarry out this education is needed. This is because, in media education, the efficiency of education is significantly affected by the capacity of the one who is teaching.

The Qualitative Exploration of Dysfunctional Religiosity for Well-being (웰빙 차원에서 역기능적 종교성에 관한 질적 탐구)

  • This study aims to analyze qualitatively the people's dysfunctional religiosity for well-being. The participants of this study were 6 the clergy and 6 believers (devotes). The clergy included three pastors of Protestant churches, two Buddhist monks (male and females), and one Won-Buddihst monk. Six devotes included two Protestants, two Catholics, and two Buddhist. There were one female in the clergy and three females in devotes. Data gathered from narrative interviews were analyzed with techniques based on Giorgi's phenomenological strategies and procedures. Twenty two topics derived from their assertions and statements, nine main meanings were classified based on those topics. Main meaning were reward-seeking religiosity, authority oriented religiosity, selfish religiosity, blind or unconditional religiosity, asocial religiosity, inactive religiosity, inexperienced religiosity, emotionally problematic religiosity, and cognitively problematic religiosity. Based on derived topics and main meaning, suggestions for further studies, for example the scale development, and information of strategies for promoting well-being of religious persons were discussed.

  • 본 연구는 대순진리회의 종교 사상에서 제시하는 바람직한 인간 관념인 인존사상을 통하여 그것이 내포하고 있는 교육적 가치성을 제고하는데 있다. 또한 본 연구는 대순사상 자체가 가지는 학문적 의의를 밝히고 그것의 교육학적 해석을 통하여 그 학문적 영역의 저변을 확대하는데에도 의미가 있다고 하겠다. 근세 조선후기사회의 종교·문화적 배경을 검토함으로써 대순사상이 당시대의 기층 민중들에게 어떠한 종교적 메시지를 전달하고 있는가를 살피고 또한 그 기본구조를 분석하여 대순사상이 제시하는 종교적 구도를 개념화 하고자 한다. 이러한 연구의 패러다임 위에서 대순사상이 지향하는 교육이념을 중심으로, 교육적 이상 실현의 가능성을 지닌 내재적 존재로서의 인존의 형성이론을 고구하여 교육적 인간상의 이상적인 모델을 확인한다. 또한 인존사상에서 표방하는 교육적 시사성이 현대 교육의 제문제에 어떠한 비전을 제시하고 있는지를 검토해 보고자 한다.

Exploring the Revision Direction and Scope of the Korean Cataloging Rules for Religious Works (종교 저작에 대한 한국목록규칙의 개정 방향과 범위 탐색)

  • The revision of the Korean Cataloging Rules (KCR) is in progress in order to conform IFLA LRM conceptual model and to strengthen its internal stability. Religious works, along with musical works and legal works, have been treated as special and important in cataloging rules. This trend continues in the new cataloging rules that seek a bibliographic model that interconnects related materials. However since KCR2(1966), there are no rules for access points or specific rules on religious works. Under the circumstances, this study analyzed (1) the contents of religious works in the recently revised cataloging rules, (2) the access points and their functions for religious works implemented in online catalogs and authority system, and finally (3) the direction and scope of KCR revision. As a result of the study, this study suggested that it is necessary to prepare detailed rules for preferred title and authorized access points for various religious works in KCR. In conclusion, some issues for further discussion were summarized.

  • This study reflects the regional context of Northeast Asian countries embodied in US-North Korean nuclear tension. The researcher uses the methodological inquiry of practical theology to analyze the political affairs and intertwine with religious education. The ecology of religious education to dismantle the threat of ethnic and racial discrimination such as white supremacy supports a shared pedagogy between students and their teachers in the narrative of Jesus to challenge all forms of oppression as the democratic presence of God.

Evaluating Geopolitical Impact through the Concept of Social Performance: The Case of a Mormon General Conference (사회적 수행의 개념을 통한 지정학적 영향의 평가 -몰몬교 연차대회를 사례로-)

  • Critical scholarship has shown itself much more adept at identifying and analyzing the content of religious geopolitics than its impacts or effects. This article suggests ways in which the concept of social performance can be used to more carefully consider the effects of religious geopolitics. Judith Butler's identity-oriented notion of performativity is usually geographers' point of entry into issues of performance. But its strong poststructuralist distrust of agency limits its power among those who question poststructuralism's grounding beliefs. This article illustrates the added utility of other theories of performance-particularly the recent pragmatic, dramaturgical, and non-poststructuralist theorization of social performance by the cultural sociologist Jeffrey Alexander-in evaluating the impact of religious geopolitical action. It does so through the case of a recent, particularly geopolitically laden Mormon General Conference. It concludes, through Butler and Alexander, that this General Conference likely accomplished significant geopolitical work. But it also, mainly through Alexander, argues that this work likely had limited capacity to motivate new or additional geopolitical action. Its power was more to reinforce than transform.

A Comparative Study on the Fundamental Act of Education in Korea and Japan (한국과 일본의 교육기본법 비교분석)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to study the Korea's Education Foundation Act and Japan's Education Foundation Act in a comparative way. The frame of comparison consists of three dimension: syntax analysis, way of legal conceptualization, and the educational climate and institutionalization. Major findings are as following: 1. Legal subjectives are clear in Korea but not clear in Japan 2. Civil relationship rules Korean education while public legal order rules Japanese education. 3. Partnership rules Korean education while administrative initiative rules Japanese education. 4. Curricular mandate is given to teachers in Korean education while to administrative hierarchy in Japanese education. 5. Public nature of schools means public credential in Korean education while public monopoly in Japanese education. 6. Professionalism is adopted for Korean teachers while missionary perspective adopted for Japanese teachers. 7. Korean education is expected to be secular while Japanese education is expected to reconcile with the traditional religious belief in Japan 8. Develop education still strongly orients the Korean education while education for sustainable development the Japanese education In summary, civil law frame is adopted in Korean education while in Japan public law frame is adopted in legalizing their Education Foundation Act. National climate influenced the education legislation in the two countries. Japan has strong missionary climate while Korea has secular perspective to education. Thess differences colored the way of literary expression in the legal text of the Education Foundation Act in the two countries.
