  • This experiment was conducted to identify the growth and yield differences in rice cultural types: Broadcasting on flooded paddy surface(BF), drilling on flooded paddy surface(DF), puddled-soil drill seeding(PD), drill seeding on dried paddy flat(DD), and machine transplanting of lO-day old seedling(MT) at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. Among the cultural types of direct seeding, the number of seedling stand showed high in order of DD>BF>DF>PD. Tillering at early growth stage was faster in MT and effective tiller showed higher in MT than in direct seeding. Growth duration from seeding to heading was longer in direct seeding than in MT for 2-13 days of Dongjinbyeo and 10-18 days of Nonganbyeo. Root distribution ratio at the surface soil revealed high in order of BF>DF>PD>DD and MT. Culm wall thickness of 4th internode was thicker in machine transplanting of 10-day old seedling than in direct seeding, and the depth of buried culm showed deep by turns of MT> DD>PD>DF and BF. The height of center gravity and moment related to lodging revealed higher in direct seeding than machine transplanting that resulted high lodging index by turns of BF>DF>DD> PD among the direct seeding cultural type. Lodging was occured seriously in the order of BF>DF>PD>DD =MT in Dongjinbyeo but wasn't significantly different in Nonganbyeo among the cultural type. The yield components and grain yield showed varietal differences but was not significantly different between in MT and in direct seeding, and among cultural types of direct seeding.

  • Recent development of computing power and theoretical advances in computational fluid dynamics have made possible numerical simulations of water waves with full Navier-Stokes equations. In this study, an internal wave maker using the mass source function approach was combined with the level set finite element method for generation of waves. The model is first applied to the two-dimensional linear wave generation and propagation. Then, it is applied to the three-dimensional simulation of the same problem. To effectively utilize computational resources and enhance the speed of execution, parallel algorithms are developed and applied for the three-dimensional problem. The results of numerical simulations are compared with theoretical values and good agreements are observed.

  • The primary objective of the current work is to develop efficient numerical code to assess the resistance performance of the twin hull form. Resistance performance for the two different twin hull forms with asymmetric and symmetric mono hull using developed code are evaluated. Numerical calculations and model tests have been compared to validate a developed code used in the current work. Comparison were carried out through sinkages of the bow and stern, trim angle and wave-making resistance. Comparative analysis regarding hydrodynamic characteristic of different twin hull forms is worthy of application in the hull form development stage.

  • This study considered the existing approximation theories of solitary wave for stable generation of it with different waveforms in a hydraulic/numerical wave tank for coping with the tsunami. Based on the approximation theory equations, two methods were proposed to estimate various waveforms of solitary wave. They estimate different waveforms and flow rates by applying waveform distribution factor and virtual depth factor with the original approximate expressions of solitary wave. Newly proposed estimation methods of solitary wave were applied in the wave generation of hydraulic/numerical wave tank. In the result, it was able to estimate the positional information signal of wave generator in the hydraulic wave tank and to find that the signal was very similar to an input signal of existing hydraulic model experiment. The waveform and velocity of solitary wave was applied to the numerical wave tank in order to generate wave, which enabled generate waveform of tsunami that was not reproduced with existing solitary wave approximation theory and found that the result had high conformity with existing experiment result. Therefore, it was able to validate and verify the two proposed estimation methods to generate stable tsunami in the hydraulic/numerical wave tank.

  • The accurate prediction of the ship wave resistance is very important to design ships which operate satisfactorily in a wave environment. Thus, work should continue on development and validation of methods to compute ship wave patterns and wave resistance. Research efforts to improve the prediction of ship waves and wavemaking resistance are categorized in two major areas. First is the development of higher-order theories to take account of the nonlinear effect of the free surface condition and improved analytical treatment of the body boundary condition. Second is the development of direct numerical methods aimed at solving body and free-surface boundary conditions as accurately as possible. A new formulation of the slender body theory for a ship with constant speed is developed by Maruo. It is quite different from the existing slender ship theory by Vossers, Maruo and Tuck. It may be regarded as a substitute for the Neumann-Kelvin approximation. In present work, the method of asymptotic expansion of the Kelvin source is applied to obtain a new wave resistance formulation in fluid of finite depth. It takes a simple form than existing theory.

  • Coastal structures, constructed for preventing coastal slope erosion, often causes the scour on the boundary between the coastal structure and the sea-bed, which might lead to collapse of coastal structures. To prevent the collapse, the usual upright block type coastal structures can be modified to other forms or systems of coastal structures. To validate the performance of the proposed systems, it is necessary to conduct high cost hydraulic experiments. If numerical modeling can be performed prior to the hydraulic experiments and the performance of the proposed systems is analyzed numerically in advance, the expenses can be reduced significantly by optimizing the number of cases for conducting the experiments. In this study, a fluid-structure interaction analysis procedure is proposed for modeling the hydraulic experiments of costal structures using the finite element package, LS-DYNA. As can be found in the usual hydraulic experiments, fluid velocities of potential scour locations are monitored and analyzed in detail for four types of coastal structures, block, step, trapezoid and rubble mound.

  • The nonlinear hydrodynamic pressure force and moment on hinged wavemakers of variable-draft are presented. A closed-form solution (correct to second-order) for the nonlinear wavemaker boundary value problem has been obtained by employing the Stokes perturbation expansion scheme. The physical significance of the second-order contributions to the hydrodynamic pressure moment are examined in detail. Design curves are presented which demonstrate both the magnitude of the second-order nonlinearities and the effects of the variable-draft hinge height. The second-order contributions to the total hydrodynamic force and moment consist of a time-dependent and a steady part. The sum of the first and second-order pressure force and moment show a significant increase over those predicted by linear wavemaker theory. The second-order effects are shown to vary with both relative water depth and wave amplitude. The second-order dynamic effects are relatively more important for hinged wavemakers with shallower drafts.

  • A study on the optimization problems to find forebode shapes with minimum wavemaking and frictional resistance was performed. The afterbody was fixed as a given hull and only forebode offsets were treated as design variables. Design variables were divided into the offsets of given hull and small variation from them. For the wavemaking resistance calculation, Neumann-Kelvin theory was applied to the given hull and thin ship theory was applied to the small variation. ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line was used for the calculation of frictional resistance. Hull surface was represented mathmatically using shape function. As object function, such as wavemaking and frictional rersistance, was quadratic form of offsets and constraints linear, quadratic programing problem could be constructed. The complementary pivot method was used to find the soulution of the quadratic programing problem. Calculations were perfomed for the Series 60 $C_{B}$=0.6. at Fn=0.289. A realistic hull form could be obtained by using proper constraints. From the results of calculation for the Series 60 $C_{B}$=0.6, it was concluded that present method gave optimal shape of bulbous bow showing a slight improvement in the wave resistance performance at design speed Fn=0.289 compared with the results from the ship theory only.
