  • In premodern society, the central spaces in local counties were known as Eupchi (邑治), in which Gwan-a (官衙). The Eupchi located in seaside counties were in Eupseong, whereas the Eupchi of inland counties only included a Gwan-a, and did not have a fortress. Yanggeun-gun (楊根郡) and Jipyeonghyeon (砥平縣), which currently form Yangpyeong-gun (楊平郡), were counties where only Gwan-a existed. At present, there are few traces of the Gwan-a in Yanggeun and Jipyeong. In addition, it is impossible to exactly verify the history, scale and location of these two Gwan-as. Therefore, this study attempts to make a rough estimation of the histories, scales and sites of these Gwan-a by analyzing the relevant literature and ancient maps that are scattered according to the principles of spatial organization of local Gwan-a. The Yanggeun and Jipyeong Gwan-a appear to have been built in the early Joseon period. There are three reasons for this assertion: First, in Yanggeun and Jipyeong, Suryeong (守令) were first officially appointed after the early Joseon period. Once Suryoeng were appointed to such counties, the Gwan-a in which they would serve could be established. Second, the Dongheon (東軒) in Yanggengun and the Gaeksa (客舍) in Jipyeonghyeon were rebuilt in 1703 (29th year of the reign of King Sukjong) and 1465 (11th year of the reign of King Sejo), respectively; thus; the Gwan-a must have existed since the early Joseon period.. Third, in Yanggeungun, the Hyanggyo (鄕校) had existed since the early Joseon period, as the Joseon government necessarily established the Hyanggyo in areas where Suryeong were established. The facilities of local Gwan-a in the Joseon period were largely divided into gonghae (公?), educational institutes, and alters. The gonghae was a facility in which the Suryeong and Gwanwon (官員) managed administrative, judicial and military affairs, and consisted of the A-sa (衙舍), Hyeongcheong (鄕廳), Jackcheong (作廳), Gaeksa (客舍), Gungwancheon (軍官廳), and so on. The education institute was called a Hyeonggyo, while alters included the Sajikdan (社稷壇), Seonghwansa (城隍祠) and Yeodan (? Both the Yeongeun and Jipyeong Gwan-a also consisted of such facilities as A-sa, Hyangcheong, Jakcheong, Gaeksa, Gungwancheong, Hyeonggyo, Changgo, Sajikdan, Seonghwangsa, Yeodan, Saryeongcheong, Jiincheong and Gwannocheong. The present sites for both Gwan-as cannot be identified with any certitude. However, they can be roughly identified by connecting the related literatures, oral statements and relics with the principles of spatial organization of local Gwan-a in the Joseon period. ${\bullet}$ Address of the Yanggeun A-sa (Dongheon): the whole of # 15, Gwanmun 1-gil, Yangpyeong-eup (Yanggeun-ri 151) in front of Yanggeun Junior High School at present. ${\bullet}$ Address of Yanggeun Gaeksa: around the Yangpyeong police station at present. ${\bullet}$ Address of Jipyeong A-sa(Dongheon): the whole of Jipyeong-ri 248-250, Jipyeong-myeon at present. ${\bullet}$ Address of Jipyeong Gaeksa: the whole of Jipyeong-ri 238, Jipyeong-myeon at present.

  • This paper discusses the characteristics and background of the production of white porcelain with the "Byeol(別)" inscription. Such porcelain was produced by the government-run porcelain kiln, Gwanyo(官窯), in the 16th and 17th centuries (from the 1560s to the 1640s), during the Joseon dynasty. The white porcelain ware, inscribed with either the term Byeol or "jwa(左)" and "u(右)," constituted a dual production system of white porcelain by Gwanyo starting in the 1560s. However, to date, few studies have examined Byeol-inscribed white porcelain. This, therefore, makes it difficult to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of inscriptions on the white porcelain produced by Gwanyo in the 15th to 17th centuries. Besides a regular annual stock of porcelain(年例進上磁器), Gwanyo also produced and supplied additional porcelain ware, or Byeol-gi, at the behest of the royal family or the court of Joseon. Byeol-inscribed white porcelain is a form of Byeol-gi, produced through extra firing, or Byeolbeon(別燔). According to use, Byeol-gi can be categorized as an item for national use(國用) or an item for internal use(內用). However, if the porcelain only carries the "Byeol(別)" inscription, it is difficult to identify its characteristics. Furthermore, as part of the annual production of porcelain was for the supply of Byeol-gi, and then for other purposes, the white porcelain came to be inscribed with dots indicating a change in ownership. In the 16th century, the royal family increased its consumption of white porcelain based on Shinyu Gongan(辛酉貢案), the government's fiscal reform measures. To guarantee a stable supply of exceptional Byeol-gi in light of Gwanyo's decline in the 1560s, the royal family benefited from the inscription of "Byeol." The white porcelain produced by Gwanyo was divided into annual offerings-those with the inscriptions "jwa(左)" and "u(右)"-and Byeol-gi, those with the inscription of "Byeol." They were managed separately from the commencement of production. Byeol-inscribed white porcelain was produced until the 1640s. During the mid-and late 1640s, Byeolbeon was temporarily suspended. Starting in the 1650s, the white clay used to produce the annual stock of white porcelain was sourced from regions other than those providing the clay for Byeol-gi production. The former used clay from Wonju(原州土) and Seosan(瑞山土), while the latter used clay from Gyeongju(慶州土) and Seoncheon(宣川土). According to the literature, the clay from Gyeongju and Seoncheon was much cleaner than that from Wonju and Seosan. Byeolbeon thus underwent a transformation, whereby production was separately managed, right from the stage of white clay mining. Ultimately, the need for the separate management of Byeol-gi through inscriptions diminished, resulting in the disappearance of Byeol-inscribed white porcelain.

  • The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the Chosun dynasty and Japan and the United States of America etc. began signing procedures from Feb. 1876. Thus, Busan port became an open port to foreign vessels in 1876. This has resulted in Busan port becoming the greatest port in Korea. This study explored records which were made by the Chosun dynasty and Japan on the opening and development of Busan port. The results are as follows ; According to making treaties between the Chosun dynasty and foreign countries, Chosun dynasty gradually opened a door to the international community. Various institutions were established in and around Busan port by Chosun and Japan. For example, maritime customs, a court of justice, police station by the Chosun side, a Japanese consulate, the Board of Trade for Japan etc by the Japan side. Records made by or related to these institutions and on the development of the Busan port during the open-port period and the Japanese colonial period were preserved at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, the National Institute of Korean History, and the Busan Metropolitan Simin Municipal Library.

  • Welding often results in welding distortion during the assembly process. The welding distortion of thin-plate structures such as the living quarters of ships and offshore installations is a more significant problem than in the case of thick-plate structures. Pre-stressing/heating and fairing, which are additional works to mitigate and control welding distortion, are inevitable, and the construction planning is accordingly delayed. In order to prevent welding distortion and minimize the additional work during the assembly process, increasing the plate thickness and/or the number of stiffeners may be a simple solution, but it may give rise to problems related to cost and weight. In this study, the welding distortion control effect of the type of stiffeners on the door openings of various living quarter structures was investigated using an experimental method and a finite element method. The results showed the feasibility of mitigating and controlling the welding distortion, and the optimum selection of the type of stiffeners was confirmed.

  • The main idea of this report, which deals with the process analysis in outfitting fields, is to improve working methods and further to secure higher productivity by removing unreasonable work factors in the workshop with the economical point of view. For this purpose, a series of techniques has been applied to some parts of chronically less productive outfitting works, expecting less man hour consumption and better working conditions to go with it. That is to make full use of process chart flow diagram(man & machine chart gang process chart). The text gives brief introductions of the charts respectively and the appendix shows actual practice directly applicable for the guidance of utilizing these charts. As the result of this, some of unreasonable work factors are removed from the total cycle and finally standard working method & time can be come out by reasonable working time and gradually improved working method.

  • In this paper, the motion response and wave load of a container ship are treated by a nonlinear motion theory, which is similar to that used by Yamamoto et. al.[1]. This paper deals with the vertical motion response in oblique waves and the effect of the Smith correction in buoyancy force calculation. In the present computation, for S-175 container ship model our result also shows that the ratio of the motion peak to peak value to the wave height decreases as the wave height increases, which was obtained earlier by Yamamoto et.al.[3]. On the other hand the nondimensional midship bending moment increases as the wave height increases. These nonlinear effects are dominant near the resonance frequency, and depend on the hull form and forward speed. However, it is found that these nonlinear effects are significant for tanker model.
