The study investigates mental models of scientifically gifted, middle school students when it comes to tides. This was done by analyzing facet of conceptual types for two contexts. We carried out two performance tasks of tide with different context. A large number of students showed different conceptual types by context. As a result of analyzing facet of conceptual types by context, there was a slight difference in content-specific facet, but a remarkable one in strategic facet. We classified four mental models about tide by configuring facets of conceptual types: (1) Tide model (2) Force model (3) Phase model (4) Hybrid model. The Tide model is scientifically accepted model, but Force model and Phase model are incorrect models, and Hybrid model is mixed model. In cases of Force model and Phase model, conceptual types concur with each other, but these types of students comprehend tides as a result of joined forces of Moon & Sun and phase change of Moon, respectively. Arranging low mental models in proportional order, Tide model (45.0%), Hybrid model (30.0%), Force model (12.5%), and Phase model (7.5%).
Tidal propagation in the Keum River has been routinely handled by numerical integration of the long fravity wave equation by Dronkers. The dynamic equations include non-linear terms thereby reproducing the shallow water tides. The model was used to compute tidal distribution of the Kum River for aveage spring, mean, neap tidal conditions and further utilised to investigate the waterlevel response within tidal reaches by combined tide and flood discharge effects. The objective of this initial study is to investigate the tidal dynamics of the lower reaches of the Keum River under the condition of before-cross-channel barrage construction.
Tidal asymmetry in the Keum River Estuary has been investigated from the observed tides. Despite strong frictional attenuation within the estuary, the $M_4$ tides reach significant amplitude, resulting in strong tidal distortion. The observed asymmetry over the area shows that generally more intense flood flows transport more sediment that do less intense ebb flows of longer duration. This causes filling of the estaury as evidenced by sand flats spreaded over the inner area. The spatial distribution of peak bottom stress associated with the dominant $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides calculated via two-dimensional numerical tidal model suggest that present tidal sedimentation regimemay be altered, sepecially in the approach channel to outer Kunsan Port and downstream part of the dike, due to the construction of barrier.

Various space geodetic techniques have been developed for highly precise and cost-efficient positioning solutions. By correcting the physical phenomena near the earth’s surface, the positioning accuracy can be further improved. In this study, the vertical crustal deformation induced by the ocean tide loading was accurately estimated through GNSS absolute and relative positioning, respectively, and the tidal constituents of the results were then analyzed. In order to validate the processing accuracy, we calculated the amplitude of eight major tidal constituents from the results and compared them to the global ocean tide loading model FES2004. The experimental results showed that absolute positioning and positioning done every hour during the observation time of 2 hours, which yielded an outcome similar to the reference ocean tide loading model, were better approaches for extracting tide constituents than relative positioning. As a future study, a long-term GNSS data processing will be required in order to conduct more comprehensive analysis including an extended tidal component analysis.
The previous two-dimensional non-linear tidal model of the East China Sea(Choi, 1980) has been further refined to resolve the flow over the ocntinental shelf in more detail. The mesh resolution of the present finite-difference grid system used is 4 minutes latitude by 5 minutes longitude over the entire shelf. The developed fine grid two-dimensional model was utilized to reproduce the $M_2$ tide and $M_4$ tide for the East China Sea contnental shelf. There is general agreement between the model results and the current observation made in the Eastern Yellow Sea, which supports the calculated tidal regime over the shelf. Some preliminary results on maximum bottom stress and tidally-induced residual current were also examined and discussed.
The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.
The development of the tidal asymmetries and the effect of an increased discharge on tide propagating into the Han River was studied quantitatively via numerical integration of one-demensional equations. The model results indicated that some tidal components including $, $, $ were actually be amplified over a segment of the river. The computed results on the effects of increased discharges on the tide were in good agreement with theoretical inference(Godin, 1985).

A two-dimensional nonlinear tidal model of the Asan Bay has been formulated to examine the tide and related hydraulic phenomena. The $M_2$ tidal regime was first computed using the model and the model also was to derive the maximum bed stress and transport potential in the region. Preliminary assessment of relation between sediment transport and the maximum bed stress distribution determined from the model are described.

The objectives of this multiyear research are directed toward the investigation of mesoscale circulation dynamics in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. With the advent of Supercomputers and increasing necessity of resolving the flow with enough details, a hydrodynamic numerical model of the East China Sea has been developed with resolution of 1/15$^{\circ}$latitude by 1/12$^{\circ}$longitude covering the entire continental shelf. As a first step M$_2$tidal regime representing the domanant tidal conditions of the shelf was computed. Preliminary results are presented and discussions for further developments are presented.
