  • This study illustrates changes in the epilithic diatom assemblages in response to urban climatic conditions. We further assess the impact of abnormal urban climate to the urban stream environment. Epilithic diatoms, water chemical and physical variables were sampled every quarter, and assessed at 3 Oncheon stream sites, for a period of two years(from 2013~2014). The variation of physiochemical properties such as BOD, COD, T-N and T-P, show that the water quality was strongly influenced with long periods of drought and flood disturbance. Epilithic diatom assemblages were separated along the stream sites; however, the physical disturbance from urban drought and stormwater changed the composition of diatom assemblages instead of decreasing the taxonomic richness. Thus, our results suggest that epilithic diatom assemblages are altered in response to urban climatic changes, resulting in variations of stream conditions. Hence, strategies of climate change adaptation are required when considering urban stream environments.

  • This study is conducted to investigate number of species in various habitat size in the area of urban biotope in Seoul from October to November in 2001 and from May to June in 2002. It is established that habitat size does not significantly affect the number of species in urban biotope. Thirty-two bird species were observed in 54 sites. Thirteen species of birds used sites of up to 1㏊, 29 species from 1 to 10 ㏊, and 8 species in the sites larger than 10㏊. We find that most of species appeared in size (1-10㏊), rather than in size (<1㏊, >10㏊). The cumulative number of species for a given cumulative area was consistently higher when small sites were added first. We think that this habitat size is the actual area to promote number of species within the urban area. Also, there was significant increase of number of species at biotope with water source and multiple vegetation structure. Therefore, if water resources and multiple vegetation structure is maintained, even small area can be helpful to the bird species promotion.

  • At research, the river's water which the sewage treatment facility will ask growth suppression the algae in the artificial rivers which it is using or it researched the method for the removal of the algae which grew. At results, when 60ppm of Chlorine was put in, the possibility of getting the result where 90% chlorophyll-a was removed and LC50 was 0.8ppm. The algae did not create even after 20days by which uses prevent agent of creation of the algae. Controlling the chlorine almost there was not an extinction effect of the algae which was already in large quantities multiplied, with in the effect against an water ecosystem widely known it is not. The prevent agent could inhibit creation of the algae, but it was judged with the fact that the methods are directly applied to the field must be researched continuously.

  • The Elaeagnus macrophylla is a stenoecious evergreen plant with nitrogen-fixing symbionts and its timing of fruit-ripening coincides with spring migration of many birds in southwestern Korea. To recognize bird species which eat fleshy fruits of the Elaeagnus macrophylla and to evaluate the effects of bird ingestion on seed germination and dispersal, we monitored birds and carried out germination experiments using its fruits and seeds from March to April 2007 at Hongdo Island, Jeonnam Province, Korea. As a result, eight species of birds including the Gray Starling (Sturnus cineraceus), the Brown-eared Bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) and the Dusky Thrush (Turdus naumanni) ingested the fruits. Germination rate was enhanced but length of seed dormancy was instead shortened in ingested (collected from the feces of birds) and manually extracted seeds (obtained directly from the fruits) than in intact fruits collected directly from the plant. Moreover, the possible scale of seed dispersal by the frugivorous birds ranged up to 6.9 ha based on home ranges of starlings. Consequently, the Elaeagnus macrophylla supplies food resources for migratory birds, and the birds give the plant opportunities of new colonization. We suggest that this kind of interaction between the nitrogen-fixing plant and avian seed dispersers is applicable as a process of natural restoration in degraded coastal evergreen forests.

  • This study was aimed to analyze the long-term fluctuation of water quality and phytoplankton dynamics of Paldang reservoir in Korea and to assess the relationship between algal bloom patterns and hydrological, limnological data. Diatoms in Paldang reservoir occurred continuously through the year. Blue- green algae occurred during the summer season (from June to Sept.), and the highest count was observed in July. Occurrence pattern of green algae was similar to that of blue-green algae. The rest of algae contained a lot of Cryptomonas spp. whose concentration was high from May to Aug. Dominant algal genera (>>7,000 cells $mL^{-1}$) in Paldang reservoir were Aulacoseira, Cyclotella, Microcystis, and Cryptomonas spp. Microcystis and Anabaena occurred during the summer season. Many different green algal genera were found in Paldang reservoir but their abundances were very low. There were some significant correlations (r>0.3, p<0.05) between algal taxa and water quality; diatoms and water temperature, TP:blue-green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, TP; green algae and water temperature, pH, DO saturation, COD, SS, TP. Furthermore, algal genera and water quality was significantly correlated (r>0.3, p<0.05) ; Aulacoseira and TN, TP; Anabaena and water temperature, DO saturation, COD, TP : Microcystisand water temperature, pH, DO saturation, TP; Coelastrum and COD, SS; Scenedesmus and water temperature, COD, TN, TP; Cryptomonas and DO saturation, TN. In Paldang reservoir, the water temperature had relatively big effect on blue-green algal bloom that was also dependant upon its hydrologic condition.

  • Existing states of attached algae in the sedimentation basin was observed during late april to early october, and the attached algae were visible 7 days after of cleaning the trough and the communities of algae became larger with increasing the operation periods. Attached algae community included bluegreen algae (Oscillatoria sp.), diatom (Synedra sp.,) and green algae (Mougeotia sp., Oedogonium sp.) and suspended diatom (Stephanodiscus sp.) as well. Diatom (Cymbella sp., Navicula sp., Synedra sp. and Stephanodiscus sp.), green algae(Mougeotia sp. and Cosmarium sp.) and blue-green algae (Anabaena sp.) were detected in the effluent of sedimentation basin. The chlorophyll-a (chl-a)concentrations of algae community on a square centimeter after 14 and 28 days were distinctively different depended on the copper sulphate treatment. The concentration of chl-a were $4{\mu}g/L/cm^2$ and $19{\mu}g/L/cm^2$ for the copper sulphate treated water and $59{\mu}g/L/cm^2$ and $147{\mu}g/L/cm^2$ for the untreated water. Diatom algae fragments were observed in red-brownish sediments on the bottom of industrial water distribution basin and degraded blue-green and green algae formated organic sediments combined with oxidized iron.

  • We investigated the effect of monochromatic light emitting diode (LED) on the growth of diatoms Nitzschia sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema sp. and green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The four microalgae species were cultured under blue LED (450 nm), yellow LED (590 nm), red LED (650 nm) and fluorescent lamp (mixed wavelengths). The maximum growth rates and cell densities of Nitzschia sp., P. tricornutum and Skeletonema sp. were highest under blue LED, followed by fluorescent lamp, red LED and then yellow LED, however those of C. vulgaris were highest under red LED. This result indicates that blue LED is favorable for the growth of diatoms. Thus, the growth of microalgae under monochromatic light might be species-specific or taxon-specific. Also, these results could be used as an important information in future for remediation of heavy metal contamination in the sediments using LED and microalgae.

  • In urgent situations such as crashes, the integrity of an aircraft's fuel tank is directly related to the survivability of the crew. Thus, an external auxiliary fuel tank should be robust against bird strikes. In this study, a numerical analysis was carried out using impact analysis software to analyze the influence of bird strike on a composite container for an external auxiliary fuel tank. The structure was modeled as a shell element, and the fluid and bird were modeled by the particle method. The behavior of the internal fluid was also examined. The maximum stress, deformation, and strain of the composite container were also calculated.

  • Effects of three biological control agents such as Xanthobacter autotrophycus, Tanichthys albonubes and Oryzias latipes on the morphology and growth of cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa were studied. The experiments were consisted of six treatments of living organism (LO) and culture filtered water of three organisms (CFW). Three LOs effectively decreased the density of M. aeruginosa, and then cyanobacteria hardy showed in the microscopic field after 5 days of cultivation. All LO and CFW agents induced the colonial formation of cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa, although there were little differences in colony formation according to the kinds, density and type of treatment. In particular, the higher density treatment of fish CFW induced effectively the colony formation of cyanobacteria, compared to the bacterial LO and CFW. Thus, the application of bio agents to control the cyanobacterial bloom is needed to the further study to diminish the adverse effects such as the enhancement of colony formation towards on the new bloom against the aquatic ecosystem.
