  • Monthly variation in species composition of shallow water fish in Cheonsu Bay were determined using samples collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Namdang beach from April 2010 to March 2011. The species composition were compared to the data obtained in 1885~86 and in 1993, and factors affecting the long-term change in species composition were analyzed. Fish collected during the study were 25 species, 2,194 individuals and 16,762 g. Chelon haematocheilus were predominated in abundance, accounting 68.5% in the number of individuals. A few number of fish were collected during the cold months from November to April. Abundance was high from July to September by a large catch of juveniles of pelagic fish. Species composition in 1993 did not differ significantly from that in 1985~86 although Fabonigobius gymnauchen living in the fine sediments were increased in abundance. Abundance increase of this gobiid fish was considered to be related to the sedimentation of fine particles due to weakened water circulation after dike construction. The number of species and catch amount in 2010~11 were significantly decreased comparing to those of the former periods; especially in pelagic fish and benthic fish, but C. haematocheilus were greatly increased in abundance. C. haematocheilus is an estuarine fish being able to survive in relatively poor quality of water. This increase seems to be related to fish larvae from the culture net cages recently installed in the inner bay. Recent decrease in abundance of shallow water fish suggested that water quality has been gradually getting poor and recently attained over a critical level for the nursery function of fish.

  • For studying the role of acetone and surfactant in solution, and selecting the best surfactant for spray solution in herbicide screening, the solubilizability of 6 nonionic surfactant-acetone aqueous solutions to 18 herbicide technicals, their foliar wettability and phytotoxicity to soybean and rice plant were tested and evaluated. The solubilizability of surfactant-acetone aqueous solutions to herbicide technicals was dependent on the acetone content of solutions, and was less affected by nonionic surfactant. Foliar wettability of the surfactant solutions was good to soybean, but only polyoxyethylene lauryl ether HLB 13.6(LE-13.6) solution showed good wettability to rice plant within the concentration range of no phytotoxicity. Tween 20(0.1%), LE-13.6(0.01%) and polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether HLB 16.0(0.01%) solutions didn't induce phytotoxicity to soybean, and most of the surfactant solutions didn't induce phytotoxicity to rice plant. There was no surfactant that showed superior emulsifiability to various herbicide technicals, good foliar wettability to plants, and no phytotoxicity, but LE-13.6 was better than others.

  • The chemical components and quality of Takjoo mash were examined on the product brewed by the case of commercial amylase, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and the yeast. 1. Lactic acid was produced at the range of 917~1,350 mg per 100 ml of the mash brewed using wheat flour, corn flour, rice and pressed barley, while succinic acid was formed at the range of 6~32 mg per 100m1 of the mash. 2. Citric acid was formed at the concentration of 6.5mg per 100m1 of the mash on the use of pressed barley, and malic acid formed at the concentration of 1.7 mg and 1.4 mg per 100m1 of the mash respectively, on the use of wheat flour and corn flour. 3. No remarkable differences between the kind of raw materials and commercial amylases and compared with the mash brewed with Nurook were observed in the components of fusel oil formed in the mash. 4. Seventeen kinds of the amino acids of the mash brewed with commercial amylase, Lactobacillus and the yeast were detected and its content was 31mg per 100ml, which is less than that of the conventional takjoo, but the contents of glycine and alanine which pray as the component of seasoning in takjoo were sufficient.

  • General anaesthetics have been usually used for a long time because handling and transportation of live fish constitutes an important aspect in fisheries science. Numerous investigations, however, have shown that the majority of fish anaesthetics cause strong toxic effect to marine fishes. Therefore, less toxic and more effective anaesthetics are essential for marine fishes. Lidocaine belongs to a group of anaesthetics which are used as a local anaesthetic in human medicine. This chemical was tested for 11 commercially important marine fishes. Anaesthetic effects were clearly dose dependent and acute or chronic toxicities were not observed within clinical doses. The recovery time in the tested fish after anaesthetization was 3 to 4 minutes.

  • Collection of organisms for the fisheries resources community were obtained with a set net during 8 months between May, 1985 and May, 1986 on the coast of Pukchon, Cheju Island, Korea. Most of organisms, representing 36 species, were less than 20cm $(93\%)$ in length, and 130g $(91\%)$ in weight. The four most abundant species were jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus ; squid, Todarodes pacificus : damsel fish, Chromis notatus : and rabbit fish, Siganus fuscescens, which comprised about $83\% in number and about $73\%$ of the total catch. The diversity index of the number of species and information indices for individual and catch were the highest in October and the lowest in Septemer, indicating a close relationship with the change between the species number and catch at that time. A cluster analysis of 17 species was illustrated from the similarity matrix. All of the 17 species were grouped at the 0.2 similarity level. Three groups were present at 0.60 level, whereas species in other groups were sporadic in occurrence.
