  • The purpose of this study is to compare the dental health capacity of smokers and nonsmokers. This study included 9,856 adults aged 19 years or older. The data used for analysis were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey for the 6th round, 1st (2013), and 2nd round (2014). Statistical analysis was performed by analysis of complex sample survey data. The demographic characteristics and results of the comparison of the dental health capacity between smokers and nonsmokers were as follows: with regard to the tissue health (T-health) index, the sex, age, and education level were statistically significant in smokers and nonsmokers. For the functioning teeth (FS-T) index, age, income, and education levels were statistically significant in smokers, while sex, age, and education level were statistically significant in nonsmokers. In smokers, the age and education level were statistically significant for present teeth (PT), sound teeth (ST), and missing teeth (MT), while in nonsmokers, the sex, age, and education level were statistically significant for the same parameters (p<0.05). A comparison of the dental health capacity between smokers and nonsmokers yielded the following findings: the T-health index was higher in smokers, while the FS-T index was higher in nonsmokers. PT and ST were higher in nonsmokers (p<0.05). The results of this study show that the dental health capacity of nonsmokers was higher than that of smokers. Therefore, a clear difference was observed in the dental health capacity of smokers and nonsmokers. The results of this study can provide objective data for nonsmoking treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between age, physical activity (walking, strength exercise), subjective body shape recognition, and weight change with subjective health status in the population aged 30 years or older among the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2018) of Koreans. The subject and method of this study was a secondary analysis study using the 7th 3rd year National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2018). Age, walking days per week, strength training days per week, subjective health status, subjective body shape recognition, and weight change during the year were used the SPSS (p<.01). The response rate of walking for 7 days (every day) was 21.9% for those aged 30-45, 27.2% for those aged 50-64, and 26.6% for those aged 65 or older. aged 8.4% and over 65 years old 7.9% (p<.001). The subjective health status was positively correlated with age (.091), number of walking days per week (.739), number of days of strength exercise per week (.530), subjective perception of body shape (.256), and weight change over one year (.303). There was a relationship (p<.01). In this study, the age group that answered 'bad' in subjective health status was the highest at 21.4% of those aged 65 or older, followed by 15.7% of those aged 50-64 and 11.0% of those aged 30-45. This could be expected to improve subjective health status by walking and strength training. Based on these results, it was intended to provide basic data for preparing health-related programs to improve subjective health status of individuals according to age.

  • The purpose of this study is to grasp the actual condition for social exclusion for the elderly, to understand the predictive factors of social exclusion. To achieve this objective, the social exclusion for the elderly was examined targeting 4,040 old people in more than 65 years old by using the second data for Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA) in 2008 by Korea Labor Institute. First, as a result of examining the actual condition for social exclusion for the elderly, the old people were indicated to be 45.4% for economic exclusion, 78.7% for working exclusion, 17.8% for residing exclusion, 43.8% for health exclusion, 33.7% for educational exclusion, and 34.3% for social-activity exclusion. Second, the possibility to be excluded economically was indicated to be bigger in the older age, in a case of not residing in a city and in the more number in household members. The possibility to be excluded from working was indicated to be higher in a case that old person is woman, in the older age, in a case that old person’s religion is christianity, in a case without spouse, in the more residing in a city, in a case that a household type is poor, in a case of dwelling in apartment, in the more number in household members. The possibility to be excluded from residing was indicated to be higher, in a case without spouse, in the more residing in a city, in a case that a household type is poor, in a case that a residing house type is general house, and in the less number in children. The possibility to be excluded from education was indicated to be higher in a case that old person is woman, in the older age, in a case that religion is not Christianity, in a case without spouse, in a case of not residing in a city, in a case that a household type is poor, in a case of the more children alive. The possibility to be excluded from health was indicated to be higher in a case that old person is woman, in the older age and in a case that a household type is poor. The possibility to be excluded from social activity was indicated to be higher in a case that old person is woman, in the older age, in a case that religion is not Christianity, in a case that a household type is poor, in a case of dwelling in apartment. This study has value as a basic research on social exclusion for the elderly.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate vitamin D status and factors associated with vitamin D deficiency among Koreans in their using Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) V. The subjects were 1,837 people who were 20-29 years old. The data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$ test and multiple logistic regression analysis using weighted composite sample analysis. Vitamin D deficiency was reveled in 84.2% of subjects; 88.6% of women and 79.4% of men showed deficiency. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, the risk for vitamin D deficiency was higher in women (OR 1.84; 95% CI 1.31-2.56), non-married (OR 2.12; 95% CI 1.41-3.19), poor subjective health status (OR 1.94; 95% CI 1.16-3.25), and in the absence of moderate to vigorous physical activity (OR 3.38; 95% CI 1.85-6.16). Continued research on vitamin D levels at this time is needed since vitamin D deficiency among Koreans in their twenties will exacerbate health problems, both individually and socially. In addition, vitamin D has been shown to be closely related to time of exposure to sunlight and physical activity. Therefore, it is thought that long-term and planned efforts should be made at the national level, such as establishing schools and workplaces in which those in their twenties can perform outdoor activities and moderate to vigorous physical activity.

  • This study aimed to identify the risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among age groups using the Framingham risk score (FRS). The research design used was a cross sectional descriptive study using the Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013-2015. Data from 5211 men, between the ages of 30-74 was analyzed. After adjusting for age, the result of logistic regression analysis showed that obesity (OR=2.51 95% CI=2.05-3.07), physical inactivity (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.39-2.10), heavy alcohol drinking (OR=1.33, 95% CI=1.09-1.62), and dietary fiber intake (OR=0.99, 95% CI=0.98-0.99) were presented as predictors of CVD. Obesity was considered to be a particularly important predictor of CVD for young and middle-aged men. This result will be used for developing intervention relating to lifestyle modification for young and middle-aged men.

  • The studies on the age determination of the spottybelly greenling, Agrammus agrammus, caught in the shore of Tongbaeksom were done by the articulative fossae of the vertebra through a stero-dissecting microscope. For determining annunli the vertebra had been cleaved lengthwise in the dorsoventral direction. Half of the vertebra had been fixed on Canada balsam with the flat side directed upwards. The alternation of two zones on the vertebra was observed. One is wide and light-colored, and the other is narrow and dark-colored. The annual layer, where the dark-colored zone shifts to the light-colored one, was appeared extending from July to August once a year. Study of the growth of A. agrammus was carried out by the method of back calculation from the vertebra.

  • Between August 1987 and July 1991, 22 patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia have received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) with non-T-lymphocyte-depleted marrow obtained from matched sibling donors. Of these patients, 12 patients were in first complete remission (CR) and 10 patients in second CR or greater or in relapse. All patients were treated with a preparative regimen consisting of cyclophosphamide (CTX, 60 mg/kg) or combined drugs, and 850 cGy single-dose or $150\~200$ cGy fractionated total body irradiation (TBI) administered twice daily for a total dose of $1200\~1320$ cGy. Survivors have been followed from 8 to 64.5 months (median, 24 months). The overall 2 year survival rate, relapse rate and incidence of radiation pneumonitis and graft versus host disease (GVHD) have been evaluated by age, phase of disease, initial WBC count, modality of TBI or conditioning chemotherapy. Overall 2 year survival was $58{\%}$. The median survival was 31 months and mean survival was 23.2 months. Overall survival have significant impact in patients of age >19 years old (p=0.008), patients in first CR (p=0.09). Two year survival rate is significantly correlated with age ( >19 vs $\leqq$19, $79.4\%$ vs $14.3\%$, p=0.0008), regimen of chemotherapy (CTX vs combined drug, $76.9\%\;vs\;33.3\%$, p=0.04), phase of disease (1st CR vs \geqq2nd$ CR or relapse, $83.3\%\;vs\;30\%$, p=0.01) and method of TBI (fractionated vs single dose, $70.7\%\;vs\;37.5\%$, p=0.05). The influence of French-American-British (FAB) subtypes on relapse rate is not significant, but initial WBC count > 20000/$mm^3$ is associated with increased relapse rate. There is difference in the rate of radiation pneumonitis ($14.3\%\;vs\;25\%$), GVHD ($14.3\%\;vs\;50\%$) and relapse ($21.4\%\;vs\;50\%$) according to fractionated versus single-dose TBI. As mentioned above, fractionated TBI is compatible for the preparative regimen combined with chemotherapy En allogeneic BMT of first CR patients under 41 years of age with suitable donor. Those results from a retrospective, non-randomized study clearly need additional clinical data, ideally from a randomized study.

  • In clinical dentistry, it is not difficult to meet the permanent first molars with severe coronal caries lesions in children or adolescents. The circumstances surrounding the first molars of children and adolescents are so immature and imperfect compared with those of adults. So we thought it significant to understand the status of these teeth at the moment of endodontic treatment and immediate cause of it. 106 patients with 135 permanent molars necessitating endodontic treatment in childhood and adolescence were included in this study, and the dental records and radiographs were examined. 1. The mean age was 11.9 year (male 11.5, female 12.5) and the result shows significant difference between gender(p<0.05). The mandibular teeth took more than half percentage than maxillary teeth. 2. Of 135 teeth, 45.2 percent of teeth had history of dental treatment previously and 16.3 percent of teeth showed necessity of re-endodontic treatment. 3. Of 73 teeth, 22 teeth had mesial-wall cavity causing endodontic treatment, 39 had occlusal cavity, and 12 had distal cavity.
