  • An experimental study of jet impingement on aluminum foam mounted on the surface with constant heat flux is conducted with the presentation of the heat transfer rate measured when jet impinges normally to a flat plate. Effects of pore density, foam thickness and Reynolds number on the heat transfer are analyzed. Experimental results show that the significant enhancement in Nu is obtained when the aluminum foam is mounted on the heated plate and that the increase in the heat transfer due to the porous material insertion is dominated by both the increase in the heat transfer area and the decrease in the momentum flux resulted from the pressure drop.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out to examine heat-transfer characteristics of an axisymmetric, under-expanded, sonic jet impinging on a flat plate and the local measurement of surface pressures and heat transfer coefficients on a plate have been achieved together with a visualization test of shock structure in a jet. Heat transfer coefficients on a plate have been found to be changed significantly depending on the under-expansion ratio as much as the nozzle-to-plate distance. These phenomena could be explained by the wall pressure measurement and the shock visualization.

  • In this study, the effect of channel flow in the concave surface on local heat transfer characteristics of array jets was investigated experimentally. A TLC method is employed to determine local heat transfer coefficients on the target plate and also flow visualization has been conducted to investigate the behavior of a row of impinging jets and array of impinging jets. Two different array patterns of impinging array jets devices are tested for Reynolds number(Re=10,000). In a row of impinging jets, secondary vortex is strongly maintained by main vortex at nozzle-to-plate distance of H/d=2. Therefore, the Nusselt number slowly decreased at the mid-way region between adjacent jets. In array jets, the local maximum Nusselt number region move further in the downstream direction due to the increase of channel flow velocity.

  • Numerical simulations of supersonic impinging jet flows are carried out using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. This paper focuses on the oscillatory flow features associated with the variation of the nozzle pressure ratio and nozzle-to-plate distance. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation from computational results are in accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. The variation of this frequency with distance show a staging behavior. Computed results for the case of nozzle pressure ratio variation for a fixed nozzle-to-plate distance also demonstrate a staging behavior. These two seemingly different staging behaviors are found to obey the same frequency-distance characteristics when the frequency and the distance are normalized by using the length of the shock cell.

  • Turbulent flow characteristics of a two - dimensional oblique plate impinging jet(OPIJ) were experimentally investigated. The jet mean velocity and turbulent intensity profIles were also measured along the plate. The jet Reynolds numbers(Re, based on the nozzle width)ranged from 10, 000 to 35, 000, the nozzle - to - plate distance(H/B) from 2 to 16, and the oblique angle (a) from 60 to 90 degree. It has been found that the stagnation point shifted toward the minor flow region as the oblique angle decreases and the position of the stagnation point nearly coin¬cided with that of the maximum turbulent intensity.

  • In the present work, a series of numerical calculations have been conducted on the cooling of a hot surface using an air/water mist jet. In some cooling processes, such as in the glass-tempering process, direct contact between the cold water drops and the hot surface should be avoided, because this may cause surface cracks due to the sharp temperature gradients. Thus, the main focus of this study is finding the appropriate operating conditions for maximum cooling without direct contact between the drops and the surface. A series of numerical experiments have been performed, and, at the same time, those results were compared with those of the previous experiments for verification purposes. The effects of droplet impinging velocity, hot plate temperature, and liquid loading ratio for mono-dispersed drops of various sizes were studied in detail.

  • Experimental results and numerical computations were conducted to investigate the effect of the confined wall on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. Experimental results and Numerical solutions were obtained by using the particle image velocimetry and the commercial CFD code (CFX 11), respectively. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (Re=5,000), conditions of confined wall (unventilate), nozzle to plate spacings ($H/W=1{\sim}16$), and nozzle to nozzle spacing (S/W=6). Experimental and numerical results were agreed well with each other. The maximum heat transfer point was found variation of nozzle to plate spacings.

  • In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by a splash plate nozzle at low jet velocities was measured by the direct contact method. The spatial distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness in the radial and circumferential directions, and the effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity were analyzed. The wavy surface was observed for low viscosity water, but not for high viscosity glycerol solutions. The sheet thickness decreased as the circumferential angle or the distance from the impinging point increased. The sheet thickness increased as the liquid viscosity increased. Comparison with the theoretical predictions for two impinging jets showed some differences from the measurement results.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics on the impingement surface can be controlled by the change of vortex with the acoustic excitation, because the flow characteristics of an impinging jet are affected strongly by the vortices formed at the jet exit. To investigate the effects of acoustic excitation, we measured the velocity, turbulent intensity distributions for the free jet and local heat transfer coefficients on a impingement surface. As the acoustic excitation, subharmonic frequency of excited frequency plays an important role to the control of the jet flow. If the vortex pairings are promoted by the acoustic excitation, turbulence intensity of the jet flow is increased quickly. On the other hand if the vortex pairings are suppressed, the jet flow has low turbulence intensity at the center of the jet. Therefore, the low heat transfer rates are obtained on the impingement plate for a small nozzle-to-plate distance. However, it has high heat transfer rates at a large distance between the nozzle and plate due to the increasing of potential-core length.
