  • To study the flow characteristics of water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids according to the shape of the nanoparticles, we measure the pressure drop in a fully developed laminar flow regime. Water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids of 0.3 Vol.% with sphere-, rod-, platelet-, and brick-shaped nanoparticles are manufactured by the two-step method. Zeta potential is measured to examine the suspension and dispersion characteristics, and TEM image is considered to confirm the shape characteristics of the nanoparticles. The experimental results show that the pressure drop of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids depends on the shape of the nanoparticles although the nanofluids has same volume fraction of nanoparticles. This is explained by the surface area per unit mass of the nanoparticles and the size of the nanoparticles suspended in the base fluids.

  • This study aimed to investigate the emulsifying properties of bovine lactoferrin in food emulsion system. First, lactoferrin solution was prepared to study its surface activities, such as surface adsorption characteristics and ${\zeta}$-potential. Second, some physicochemical properties of lactoferrin emulsion which resulted from variations of environmental conditions (i.e., pH or NaCl addition) were determined. As for surface adsorption characteristics evaluated by surface tension, it was decreased with increasing lactoferrin concentration in solution ($1{\times}10^{-5}{\rightarrow}0.2wt%$) and showed a plateau (${\fallingdotseq}44$mN/m) above 0.01 wt%. It was also changed with pH and the minimum value of 53.8 mM/m was observed at pI of lactoferrin. This was related to changes in ${\zeta}$-potential of the lactoferrin solution with respect to pH. Fat globule size of lactoferrin emulsion was decreased with increasing lactoferrin concentration and a stable emulsion was formed above 0.5 wt% lactoferrin in emulsion with fat globule size $d_{32}$ of ca. 0.33 ${\mu}m$ as confirmed by creaming stability experiment (i.e., Turbiscan). As with surface tension, fat globule size of lactoferrin emulsion also changed with pH and showed a maximum value at pI. As evaluated by Turbiscan, in the presence of NaCl, the lactoferrin emulsion showed instability in particular above 10 mM.

  • In this study, we investigated the stability of the liposome formulation containing the phytochemicals-peptide derivatives. Among liposomes prepared using lecithins or surfactant under various conditions, the most stable niosome was obtained by using sodium palmitoyl sarcosinate and macadamia intergrifolia seed oil. The stability of peptide-containing niosome (N9) was confirmed by the TEM images. The N9 was stable at 0 and 45 degrees by Turbiscan, and its particle size was 95.7 nm. The N9 showed zeta potential value of -78.19 mV, and peptide-inclusion rate of 65.2% by BCA assay.

  • Zeolite A helps an increase of detergency performance according to showing the ion exchange effect for polyvalant ions and it's detergency performance could be calculated quantitatively by using the disperse stabilization theory because it is water-insoluble material and is as colloid particles in aqueous solution. In this study, zeta potential of carbon black, cellulose, and Zeolite A were measured in each inorganic salt solutions and applied to the theory of Heterocoagulation in order to evaluate the detergency performance of Zeolite A about the particulate soil at the view point of interaction potential energy. Zeolite A was shown help an increase of detergency performance according to the increasing of the steric repulsion between Zeolite A and cellulose in $Na2CO_3$ solution and the decrease of re-deposition of carbon black on the fabric by rapid coagulation with carbon black in $Na_2SO_4$ solution.

  • This paper presents the numerical results of fluid flow and mixing in a microfluidic device for electro-osmotic flow (EOF) with an trapezoidal electrode array on the bottom wall (ETZEA). Differently from previous EOF in a channel which only transports fluid in colloidal system. ETZEA can also be utilized to mix a target liquid with a reagent. In this study we propose a method of controlling fluid flow and mixing enhancement. To obtain the flow and mixing characteristics, numerical computations are performed by using a commercial code, CFX-10, and a self-made code LBM-D. It was found that the flow near the trapezoidal electrode in the ETZEA is of 3-D complex flows due to the zeta potential difference between the trapezoidal electrode and channel walls, and as a consequence the hetrogeneous zeta potential on the electrodes plays an important role in mixing the liquid.

  • Cement-reinforcing carbon fibers were surface-modified with $O_2$, $H_2O$, acrylic acid, diaminocyclohexane plasmas and their effects were investigated. Hydrophobic surfaces with water contact angles of $75{\sim}80^{\circ}$ were changed to hydrophilic surfaces. The water contact angles were reduced down to lower than $10^{\circ}$. As a result, the fiber's hygroscopic property and dispersion in water were improved. Also, Zeta potential of the fiber in water was changed from a negative value to positive values. As a result, adhesion with cement that had a negative Zeta potential was improved up to 57~124% through increased electrostatic interaction.

  • Filtration by fibrous filter is one of the Principle methods used for removing pollutant particles in the liquid. Because of the increasing need to protect both human health and valuable devices from exposure to fine particles, filtration has become more important. Filters have been developed with modified surface charge characteristics to capture and adsorb particles by electrokinetic interaction between the filter surface and particles contained in water. The main purposes of this study are to develop and evaluate the performance evaluation of the apparatus for making a positively charged porous filter media and to analyze the surface characteristics of the filter media for capturing negavitely charged contaminants mainly bacteria and virus from water. The experimental apparatus consists of a mixing tank, a vacuum pumping system, a injection nozzle, a roller press and a controller. The filter media is composed of glass fiber(50-750 nm), cellulose($10-20{\mu}m$) and colloidal charge modifier. The characteristics of filter media is analyzed by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy), AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) and quantified by measuring the zeta potential values.

  • Recycling process of iron should be developed for efficient recovery of neodymium (Nd), rare metal, from acid-leaching solution of Nd magnet. In this study, $FeCl_3$ solution as iron source was used for preparation of iron nano particles with the condition of various factors, such as, reductant, and surfactant. $Na_4P_2O_7$ and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactants, $NaBH_4$ as reductant, and palladium chloride ($PdCl_2$) as a nucleation seed were used. Iron powder was analyzed by using XRD, SEM for measuring shape and size. Iron nano particles were prepared at the ratio of 1:5 (Fe (III) : $NaBH_4$). Size and shape of iron particles were round-form and 50 ~ 100 nm size. Zeta-potential of iron at the 100 mg/L of $Na_4P_2O_7$ was negative value, which was good for dispersion of metal particle. When $Na_4P_2O_7$ (100 mg/L), PVP($FeCl_3:PVP$ = 1 : 4, w/w) and Pd($FeCl_3:PdCl_2$ = 1 : 0.001, w/w) were used, iron nano particles which were round-shape, well-dispersed and near 100 nm-sized range. In this condition, $FeCl_3$ solution changed with spent Nd leachate solution, and then it is possible to be made round-formed iron nano particles at pH 9 and at the reaction bath over 20 L which is not include any surfactant.

  • We studied on preparation of nanoparticles modified surface using biodegradable polymer, poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Two kinds of PLGA nanoparticles were prepared by a spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion (SESD) method using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) as a cationic surfactant and polyethylene glycol-block-polypropylene glycol copolymer (Lutrol F68) as a nonionic surfactant. Model protein was coated on the surface of nanoparticles by the ionic complexation. The model protein was that influenza vaccine ($H_3N_2,\;H_1N_1$, B strain) labeled with NHS-fluorescein. The sizes of cationic nanoparticles were 140-160 nm and the surface charges were 50-60 mV. The sizes of nonionic nanoprticles were 80-90 nm and the surface charge was -10 mV. After coating vaccine on the surface of nanoparticles, the sizes of cationic nanoparticles were increased to 380-400 nm and the size of nonionic nanoparticles was not increased. The amount of coated vaccine on the cationic nanoparticles was 22.73 ${\mu}g$/mg.
