  • Herbicides were classified by two-dimensional ordination analysis based on the weed flora which was not controlled by application of a particular herbicide. The number of herbicide group was varied depending upon the weed community type and the experiment site. The technique of the two-dimensional ordination analysis gave more comprehensive informations about selecting of herbicides for increasing the herbicidal efficacy, for increasing the weed spectrum and for reducing the herbicide cost by mixing of herbicides. The two-dimensional ordination analysis could be used not only herbicide classification and selecting effective herbicide or herbicide combination but also can be used for the evaluation of systematic application of herbicides.

  • This experiment was carried out during 1983-1984 to determine an effective method for the introduction of pasture species on nonarable hill country without cultivation. In this experiment, 1.8 and 2.8kg a.i. $ha^{-1}$ rates of glyphosate and a 0.7kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ rate of paraquat were applied, and also 30, 45 and 60 days intervals between spraying and sowing were used. Establishment of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) was not affected by the application of herbicides, but that of ladino clover (Trifolium repens) was significantly affected by glyphosate and paraquat. It was found that glyphosate and paraquat have no apparent soil residual activity or pre-emergence effect when sprayed 30 to 60 days before sowing. Dry matter yield of pasture species on the herbicide treatments was significantly higher than that on the unsprayed treatments. The highest yield was obtained from the 1.8kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ rate of glyphosate 45 days before sowing. Botanical analysis at the final cut showed that the shrubs and native grass of original site were reduced to 5% by glyphosate application, but those on the unsprayed control were still 51%. Crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility of herbage on the herbicide treatments were higher than those on the unsprayed treatments. Results indicated that glyphosate was more effective to control resident shrubs and grass than paraquat, and good establishment and higher yield of surface-sown pasture species can be obtained by spraying 1.8 to 2.8kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ of glyphosate, 30 to 45 days before sowing.

  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been found as a promising new forage crop of higher quality and yield in Korea since 1985. The objective of the study was to select preemergence herbicides for weed control in growing pearl millet in order to reduce production cost and with increased yields. Propazine (Milogard 4L) was the best in controlling weeds without its phytotoxicity at the standard application rate, and with the highest survival rate of seedlings of peal millet "Suwon 1" hybrid. Sprayings with Atrazine and Simazine caused lower survival rate of peal millet and with their light phytotoxicity as compared with manual weeding and Propazine spraying. Alachlor killed pearl millet seedlings almost completely. Pendimethalin also was not good for weed control of peal millet due to its severe phytotoxicity and with very low survival rate of pearl millet seedlings.

  • This study was conducted to establish the effective weed management methods in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Herbicides registered for use before transplanting, oxadiazon 12% EC, pyrazolate 36% SC, pretilachlor 14% EC and thiobencarb 50% EC were effective until 0.5 leaf stage of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzoides. Herbicides registered for use after transplanting, fentrazamide 1% GR and mefenacet 18% SC were effective until 2 leaf stage of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola and triafamone 0.98% SC was possible to control up to 4 leaf stage. HPPD inhibitors, benzobicyclon, mesotrione and tefuryltrione SC, were simultaneously effective to SU herbicide-resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Herbicides registered for use before transplanting, benzobicyclon + oxadiargyl EC out of the tested herbicide was most effective in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. Its effectiveness rises in proportion to flooding duration. Mazosulfuron GR, a herbicides registered for use after transplanting was most effective without phytotoxicity until 60 days after transplanting in rice field simultaneously dominated by the herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola.

  • The effects of herbicides on biochemical processes in soil environment were studied by examining the effects of the chemical structure of each herbicides on soil enzyme activities and pesticides residue revealed when soil treated with urea was incubated at $28{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 56 days. The inhibition effects of herbicides on soil enzyme activites in soil decreased in the order of urea group>dinoseb>propanil>diphenyl eter group>acid amide group for urease, and dinoseb>urea group>diphenyl ether group>acid amide group for L-glutaminase and protease, dinoseb>diphenyl ether group>urea group>acid amide group for phosphatase. Herbicides inhibited the activities of soil enzyme in the early stage of treatment but increased the activities of urease, L-glutaminase and protease in the late stage. When herbicides were treated in soil together with urea the degradation of insecticides was accelerated.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of an acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicide resistant weed on paddy at 289 sites by soil sampling in Chungcheongbuk-Do of Republic of Korea from February to April in 2017. The most dominant weed was Monochoria vaginalis and Echinochloa oryzicola on each city and county. ALS inhibiting herbicide resistant ratio and occurrence area were 80.6% and 28,272 ha, respectively, in Chungcheongbuk-Do which was 3 times than in 5 years ago. The herbicide resistant ratio, Okcheon-Gun was the highest at 93.8%, Chungju-Si, Boeun-Gun, Yeongdong-Gun, Jincheon-Gun and Geosan-Gun were over 80%, Cheongju-Si, Eumseong-Gun and Jeungpyeong-Gun were over 70%. The herbicide resistant area, Cheongju-Si had the largest at 6,957 ha, Chungju-Si was 4,277 ha, Jincheon-Gun and Boeun-Gun was 3,536 ha and 3,282 ha, respectively. By weed, ALS inhibiting herbicide resistant ratio and occurrence area, Monochoria vaginalis was 49%, 17,646 ha, Echinochloa oryzicola 44%, 15,617 ha, Schoenoplectiella juncoides 29%, 10,377 ha, respectively. In all cities and counties of Chungcheongbuk-Do, Monochoria vaginalis and Echinochloa oryzicola are more than 40% resistant to ALS inhibiting herbicides, intensive management is required. The use of sulfonylurea herbicides is increasing, most farmers use herbicides 10 days after transplanting, so management after transplanting is necessary and the occurrence of herbicide resistant weeds should be reduced by alternating herbicide application every year.
