Between 1876~1895 yr, the first western hospital "Jejung-Won" was built in Seoul by the Korean Gov. with the help of the American Missionary Dr. Allen. The special clinic for curing smallpox, Udu-Kuk was built nationally and the hospitals for infection disease were built in the same periods. In the next stage 1896~1905, 1905~1910 yr, there were many type of facilities such as military hospital, oriental medicine hospital, public hospital for poor people, clinic or hospital for Mission. After being conquered by Japan in 1910~1945, the Japan Healthcare System was directly transferred into Korean system and the healthcare facilities was built by japanese architect. At that time, the Japan healthcare system had been constructed after following the modern European healthcare system. Most healthcare facilities in the age of Japanese imperialist was handed over to the Korean Government in 1950~1960 yr after world war II.

  • The first Protestant medical missionary, Horace Allen, came to Korea in 1884 and built the first western-style hospital, Jaejungwon. John Heron, Oliver Avison and other foreign medical doctors soon followed. They established hospitals and medical schools, and, by treating patients and educating native doctors, they disseminated and developed modern medicine in Korea. At the same time, they wrote letters and reports to their sponsoring agencies, as well as family and friends, thereby leaving a vast body of literature that is scattered all over the world. Since the end of the 19th century, the records left by foreign medical missionaries have been valuable resources for the study of Korean history. While all types of records, such as diaries, memoirs, reports and travel logs, are available, these tend to be exaggerated or unverifiable because they are unilateral records. In contrast, letters can be verified because they are bilateral records between the recipient and the sender, and cannot be modified or altered according to changes in circumstances. Despite the academic value of these materials, however, there have been insufficient efforts to discover or identify these primary data sources, or to systematically organize them for scholars. This paper identified 49 archival collections from 29 institutions in North America. After analyzing their academic value, the paper will explore digital humanities options in utilizing the letters for future scholarship.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of Al(III) with thorin have been investigated. The optimum condition of pH, concentration of ligand and surfactant, and stability were evaluated. The thorin ligand offers selective separation of Al(III) from sample solution containing Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). Various surfactants were tested and Triton X-100 showed the best stability and the maximum absorbance in an aqueous solution of Al(III)-Thorin-Triton X-100 complex appears about 526 nm. The method was applied for the determination of Al(III) in mixed sample solution. Separation and preconcentration was performed with a short column filled with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. Control of the pH during the column operation is essential because the adsorption capacities are very sensitive to change in pH. Their separation was carried out in 0.2 M acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution (pH 4.5) and 1.0 M $HNO_3$media.

  • This paper proposes a low power current-steering 10-bit DAC selecting clock enable signal. The proposed DAC reduces the clock power by cutting the clock signal to the current-source cells in wihich the data will not be changed. The proposed DAC was implemented using a 0.13${\mu}m$ CMOS process with $V_{DD}=1.2V$. Its core area is 0.21$mm^2$. It consumes 4.46mW at 1MHz signal frequency and 200MHz sampling rate. The clock power is reduced to 30.9% and 36.2% of a conventional DAC at 1.25MHz and 10MHz signal frequencies, respectively. The measured SFDRs are 72.8dB and 56.1dB at 1MHz and 50MHz signal frequencies, respectively.

  • Gas chromatography serves to separate the mixtures into its components, and mass spectrometer is used to analyzing of unknown compounds. But there are many problems the identification of horn compounds using by GC only. As this reason GC/MS a very powerful analyzing technique. Mass spectrometer consists of 1) inlet stem 2) ion source 3) Bass filter 4) detectors and 5) data system. There are two analyzing modes in the GC/MS, those are scan and SIM(selected ion mom toping) modes. Scan mode is used when analyzing unknown compounds and SIM mode al lows the mass spectrometer to detect specific compound with very high sensitivity. As GC/MS applications for the analysis of cosmetic products, volatile compounds in lotion, earn foundation and hair color, and carbon distribution of fatty acids in soap were performed. Also as a new sample pre-treatment technique, head space sampler/GC/MS introduced in order to analyze the volatile compounds in a toothpaste.

  • Korean ginseng, a special product of Korea, has been one of the most important exports since the era of the Three Kingdoms. However, not many records were kept about ginseng in Korea until the Goryeo Dynasty. This paper summarizes the records relating to international diplomatic relations and trade of ginseng in the Goryeo Dynasty and the medicinal books known to have been published at the time. During the Goryeo Dynasty, ginseng was actively transported to the neighboring countries of Bohai, Song, Wa, Later Jin, and Yuan as a diplomatic gift or as a trade item. Ginseng was mainly exported from Goryeo to these countries, but it was also received as a diplomatic gift from Bohai and Khitan. Arabian merchants came to Byeokran Port, a representative international trading port of Goryeo, and traded ginseng. After the Mongol invasion, the demand for ginseng in the Yuan Dynasty was excessive, which became a big social problem. During the Goryeo Dynasty, several medicinal books were published, including Jejungiphyobang, Eouuichwalyobang, Hyangyakgobang, Samhwajahyangyakbang, Hyangyak Hyemin Gyeongheombang, Hyangyak Gugeupbang, and Biyebaekyobang. Hyangyak Gugeupbang, which was reprinted during the Joseon Dynasty, has been handed down to the present time, although this has not been the case for the originals of the remaining books. Recently, some of the latter books have been restored through the study of the references in various medicinal books of later generations. While the medicinal books used in the royal court showed that a high proportion of the prescriptions containing ginseng, not a single prescription for ginseng has been found in theHyangyak Gugeupbang, which was mainly used for commoners. This is thought to be because ginseng was very rare and expensive at the time, so it was difficult for commoners to access it.

  • In an attempt to quantitate and qualitate residual antibiotics and antibacterial agents in meat simultaneously, we studied a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/M8) analysis. For a simultaneous analysis of penicillin G, chloramphenicol and thiamphenicol in meat, a simple and rapid clean-up procedure including extraction with 0.01 M EDTA-2Na Mcilvaine buffer (pH 4.0), defatting with n-hexane, and elution with 0.01M-methanolic oxalic acid from Bond Elute $C_{18}$ cartridge, and quantitation by selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode after derivatization was performed. The recoveries (%) of penicillin G, chloramphenicol and thiamphenicol (CV, %) at 1 ppm fortification level were 63.5 (7.6), 76.3 (8.1) and 84.7 (2.0), and the detection limits of those were 0.6, 0.085 and $0.084\;\mu\textrm{g}$ beef, respectively. This method using 81M mode allows excellent detection and quantitation of residual antibiotics and antibacterial agents in meat. Moreover, confirmation by a full scan electron impact mass spectrum is possible if residual level in the sample in above 1 ppm.
