  • The characteristics of ground vibration have been analyzed by test blasting in southern region of Jeju (layered ground consisting of basalt and clinker). By grasping the principal component of ground vibration and depriving the prediction equations of ground vibration, the propagation characteristics of ground vibration have been compared to the domestic design guidelines. Ground vibration in layered ground has a small amplitude at a short distance. However, it has been confirmed that the vibration energy is transmitted further by virtue of the low attenuation of the ground vibration as it goes to a longer distance. Moreover, the frequency has been confirmed to be low frequency band. The outcome has been defined that it resulted because the clinker layer with a large pore transforms the blasting energy seismic wave with high frequency into a low frequency wave having a long waveform period. In addition, the limits of design guidelines were identified by comparing the ground vibration of Jeju and other bedrock areas. Thus, the necessity of the development of the prediction equations of ground vibration utilized in design that reflect the characteristics of the area has been suggested.

  • Purpose: This study analyzes and studies the characteristics of the Jeju area and uses them as basic data such as construction method design in the future development project. Method: Based on the ground survey data of the construction conducted in Jeju, the depth, relative density, N value, function state, color tone, groundwater level, and compressive strength were analyzed and studied. Result: Studies show that Jeju has columnar joints consisting of ancient volcanic activity and rapid cooling by nearby seawater, thick sand layers found on the coast, and clinker layers and Seogwipo layers formed by Mercury volcanic activity. Conclusion: It is hoped that it will be used as data for selecting basic design and basic construction method by understanding the special ground form of Jeju area and reflecting its characteristics well when designing construction.

  • Sands distributed in Jeju island's coastal areas, Korea, can be classified as silicate sand derived from volcanic rock, carbonate sand derived from shells, and mixed sands containing both silicate and carbonate sands. These three types of sands typically exist in Jeju coastal areas. Samples of silicate, carbonate and mixed sands were obtained from Samyang beach, Gimnyeong beach, and Jeju harbor area, respectively. Compression tests were conducted to assess the compression characteristics of these sands. As a result of these tests, each sand showed different behaviors. For Samyang beach sand, it appeared that initial compression is a larger than the other two sands. For Cimnyeong and Jeju harbor sands, however, the additional compression occurred after initial compression. This could result from the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of sand particles. In addition, settlement behavior of Jeju harbor ground according to the construction stages was analyzed using the measured data. It showed that in addition to the initial elastic compression, a considerable additional compression occurred with time. The settlements of Jeju harbor ground were predicted by using the elastic settlement calculation methods (empirical methods) and the compression test method. The empirical methods, which did not consider the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of particles could show smaller result than that occurring actually.

  • Jeju island has a special ground layer called 'Sumgol' due to the geological characteristics. The terminology 'Sumgol' is generally defined as the rain fall flows through the Sumgol without blocking and smaller size than cave, which men cannot enter. This paper presents the influence of the Sumgol on ground stability under various loading conditions using numerical simulations when the airport is constructed. The results showed that the vertical settlements of each section are within the allowable settlement.

  • This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, In order to examine the application of lateral earth pressure to the earth retaining wall considering the typical ground characteristics (clinker layer) in Jeju. The prediction of the lateral earth pressure causing the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, it was confirmed that the maximum horizontal displacement predicted at site A was about 5 times larger than the measured value, and the ground with maximum horizontal displacement occurred by the prediction was found to be the clinker layer. In the case of site B, the predicted value was 4 to 7 times larger than the measured value. In addition, the ground with maximum horizontal displacement and the tendency of horizontal displacement were very different depending on the prediction method. This means that research on lateral earth pressure that can consider regional characteristics needs to be continued, because it is due to the multi-layered ground characteristics of the Jeju area in which bedrock layers and clinker layers are alternately distributed,

  • Safety issue for offshore wind-turbine foundation becomes a crucial factor as offshore wind turbines have been scaled up. Correspondingly, there is a demand to understand the effect of soil-structure interaction on to system behavior in geotechnical engineering point of view. The p-y curve method researched in past few decades is one of the most appropriate methodology to analyze the problem. In this study, recently proposed p-y curve models for various rocks are calibrated to analyze the engineering characteristics of seabed of Jeju Island where it is known to be most suitable area for offshore wind energy farm. Step by step calibration process for p-y models is presented. Analysis results show that subgrade reaction generally increases as closer to seabed. It is also shown that the behavioral characteristics of foundation reflect well rock properties in terms of resultant moment, shear force, etc.

  • Volcanic rocks in Jeju Island have vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. In addition, the bedrock of Jeju Island shows stratified structure, that is, soft layers composed of pyroclastic rocks or cavities are irregularly developed between the basalt layers by several times of volcanic activity. In this study, various physical tests and unconfined compressive strength test were conducted for intact rocks sampled in northwestern onshore and offshore of Jeju Island. The results obtained in the tests were compared with the physical and mechanical characteristics of intact rocks sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. As a results, it was confirmed that the physical and mechanical characteristics of basalts sampled in northwestern Jeju Island were similar to those of basalts sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. In addition, it was possible to estimate approximate design parameters from the correlation of mechanical properties with physical properties of basalts in Jeju Island.

  • Volcanic rocks in Jeju island show vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. Previous studies on the volcanic rocks in Jeju island have been actively conducted on geological and chemical properties in terms of geophysics and geology and on physical and mechanical properties in terms of engineering. But comprehensive comparative analysis on physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island is not conducted. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island were compared and analyzed comprehensively through the existing research papers and reports about volcanic rocks in Jeju island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity is commonly linear and could be represented as two different linear approximations. In addition, it was found that the relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity and the relationship between absorption (porosity) and uniaxial compressive strength could be classified more clearly, considering two different linear relationships in absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity.

  • The distribution properties of airborne chlorides at the coasts of Jeju island were identified in this study. For this, Jeju island was divided into four regions-east, west, south, and north, and the airborne chlorides were investigated in those regions. And the regional and seasonal distribution properties of airborne chlorides were analyzed. Jeju island, which has a subtropical climate and is surrounded by ocean, has a great regional variation in the distribution properties of airborne chlorides, with a difference of more than 6 times between the eastern region, the highest region, and the southern region, the lowest region. In terms of seasonal properties, the airborne chlorides in eastern and western region were high in summer and fall, and in summer mainly due to typhoon. The airborne chlorides in northern region were high in winter due to the northwest wind, and the that of southern region were high in summer. Meanwhile, the airborne chlorides of Jeju island tends to be high compared to the eastern, western, and southern coasts of South Korea.
