  • This study analyzed the shifts that occurred before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 by scrutinizing digital keywords derived from prominent culture media, such as books and instagram. The analysis identified trends rooted in digital terminology. For this study, the period 2017 to 2022 was divided into three-year segments, before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Subsequently, an analysis was conducted using digital keywords to assess the number of digital-related books and book hashtags, the number of instagram mentions, and relevant keywords. We found that COVID-19 exerted a discernible influence on information related to digital keywords, substantially impacting both the book publishing market and instagram. Notably, digital-related books have been published in a variety of fields since the outbreak, and new fields are emerging. The year 2020 saw the most significant growth in the mentions of digital terms on instagram. Such terms were used in conjunction with terminology related to people working in a digital environment, endeavors aimed at revenue generation in online spaces, leisure activities associated with art and culture, and online service platforms. Through the analysis of digital keywords, this study is expected to contribute to the understanding of digital trends and their future trajectories.

  • The results of analyzing the hydrographic observations in the southwestern sea of Jeju Island in the last 10 days of August 1999 to investigate the characteristics of oceanic front area appeared in the East China Sea in August from is summarized as follows: In Line A, a front appears at Station A5 of 124°E and 31°30'N, showing relatively uniform density of 21.4 to 22.1 in the surface layer of 50m depth, which is distinguished from 22.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean. In Line B, a front also appears at Station B6 of 124°E and 33°N, of which density is distinguished from 20.0 shown in the sides of China and open ocean as In Line A. As a result, the front area caused by fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in the East China Sea is formed at 124°E and 124°30'in the direction of east and northeast from Yangtze River, respectively. Nutrient concentrations in the study area are characterized by higher density in the side of China and by clear density difference between the upper and the lower layers in the side of open ocean, while by uniformly lower density concentration between the upper and the lower layers in the front area. Chlorophyll-α concentrations is high in the sides of China and open ocean, while low in the front area. Judging from the above results, the productivity in the front area is lower according to the inactivity of phytoplankton due to increased flow from vertical mixing between the upper layer and the lower layer. Also, the front area in the East China Sea in summer may be moved towards the adjacent sea of Jeju Island by increasing fresh water runoffs from the Yangtze River in summer.

  • In order to evaluate the diversity of microbial population of Korean traditional Deonjang and Gochujang produced in Jeju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk province area, microbial communities were analyzed using next generation sequencing. In this result, the dominant bacteria of Deonjang in three area were Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Tetragenococcus halophilus, and Bacillus was major dominant bacteria in Jeonnam (43.16%) and Jeonbuk (64.54%) area. But in Jeju area, Bacillus was 0.22%, which was significantly different from the other two. Equally, the dominant fungi of Deonjang in 3 area were Candida versatilis. Common fungus in Jeonnam and Jeonbuk area was Candida sp., respectively, 64.22% and 33.68% and Micor sp. was a common fungus in Jeonnam (15.66%) and Jeonbuk area (36.73%). But in Jeju area, Candida sp. and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii were dominant than mold. Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, and B. amyloliquenfaciens were the preminant bacteria in the traditional Gochujang in three regions. But there were no common dominant fungi in the 3 regions. Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp. prevailed in Jeju and Jeonnam region, and Zygosaccharomycess rouxii predominanted in Jeonbuk area. These results suggested that the difference in the samples collected for the study were classified into similar groups according to the characteristics of each sample rather than regional characteristics.

  • This study compared the pork quality and muscle fiber characteristics between the Jeju black pig (JBP) and domesticated pig breeds, including three-way crossbred (Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire ${\times}$ Duroc, LYD), Berkshire (B), Duroc (D), Landrace (L), Meishan (M), and Yorkshire (Y) pigs. JBP had the lowest carcass weight among the pig breeds (p<0.05) and its NPPC marbling score was lower than the other domesticated pig breeds (p<0.05), except for M. M had the highest value for backfat thickness among the pig breeds (p<0.05), whereas its NPPC marbling score was the lowest (p<0.05). The pH values were higher in JBP and B at 45 min and 24 h postmortem, respectively, but LYD and M had the lowest pH values at 45 min and 24 h postmortem, respectively (p<0.05). M had a higher lightness and lower redness than the other breeds (p<0.05). Moreover, M had the highest drip loss among the pig breeds (p<0.05), whereas D had the lowest drip loss and the highest redness (p<0.05). In terms of muscle fiber characteristics, JBP and LYD had the largest type IIB fibers (p<0.05). The fiber number and area composition of type I fibers were higher in JBP than the others (p<0.05) however type IIA fibers were lowest in JBP among the pig breeds (p<0.05). Overall, our results indicate that JBP provided better pork quality compared with M, but the carcass trait and pork quality of JBP were not better than LYD and D, respectively.

  • A study was done to investigate characteristics of the land and sea breeze over Cheju island on the basis of surface meteorological data collected from 1977 to 1986. The results are summarized as follows: The frequency of the land and sea breze was highest in August followed by September, October, May and November in descending order. This indicates that the frequency of the land and sea breeze is higher in fall than in spring, and lowest in winter. The sea breeze began much earlier than any other regions of Korea all the year round, and it began about 30 minutes earlier and ended one hour later in the northern coast than in the southern coast of Cheju island. Meanwhile, the land breeze began about one hour earlier in the southern coast than in the northern coast and ended almost at the same time in both coasts. The annual mean duration of the sea breeze was about one hour longer in the northern coast than in the southern coast, but the land breeze showed an opposite trend. The duration of the sea breeze was longer in summer than in winter and again the land breeze was opposite. Transition period from the sea to the land breeze was relatively long in summer and shout in winter, but transition period from the land to the sea breeze was not different between seasons. The time for a maximum velocity of the sea breeze came earlier in the southern coast than in the northern coast, but that of the land breeze came almost at the same time in both coasts with no seasonal variations. Monthly mean maximum velocity of the sea breeze was greater than that of the land breeze.

  • The fluvial Tamna Formation, consisting of conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone layers, is widely distributed in Jeiu Island. Various sizes of quartz crystals were identified from most of the Tamna Formation, including the mudstone layer. XRD analysis also shows that the mudstone layer is composed of various minerals, quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, mica, magnetite, hematite, olivine, amphibole, gibbsite, calcite, analcime and clay minerals such as illite, kaolinite, vermiculite, smectite, chlorite, $10{\AA}$-halloysite. There is a tendency showing that the more amount of kaolinite, vermiculite, and chlorite is present where the more amount of quartz crystals is present. It is likely that the main source materials contributing to the Tamna Formation were from the parental rocks containing abundant quartz grains, suggesting that the Tamna Formation could not be related to Jeju volcanic rocks, but possibly to pre-existing basement rocks. Thus, we propose that the Tamna Formation was formed from the materials derived from both pre-existing basement rocks and Jeju volcanic rocks, which were subsequently affected by diagenesis, hydrothermal alteration and weathering process.

  • Hawaiite which distributed in Sanjideungdae of Sarabong cinder cone and Biseokgeori area in northern part of Jeju island, contains phenocrysts of titanium-rich hornblende (kaersutite) and plagioclase with microphenocrysts of olivine, pyroxene and very small amounts of K-feldspar lath and apatite. Kaersutite is mostly euhedral or subhedral phenocrysts having opaque reaction rim. And kaersutite in Sanjideungdae area completely replaced to opaque minerals showing pseudomorph. Also it may be seen partly replacement of pyroxene by kaersutire as reaction rim. It is considered that hydration reaction had occurred with fluids. The crystallization pressure of kaersutite using pressure-$Al^T$ geobarometer is approximately 6.3 kb in Sanjideungdae area and 4.9 kb in Biseokgeori area, respectively. As a result, fluid injection to magma and crystallization of kaersutite of Sanjideungdae hawaiite is deeper than that of Biseokgeori hawaiite, and it was growed to phenocrysts through crystallization. It is estimated that kaersutite of Biseokgeori hawaiite originated from crystallization from the host magma, based on the euhedral nature of the phenocrysts and on the presence of apatite inclusions.

  • Monthly variation in species composition of upstream-migrating fish in the Cheonjeyeon Estuary was determined by analyzing fish data collected January~September 2004 and January~August 2007. Fish migrating from the sea to freshwater through the channels were collected by a rectangular net with a mesh size of 2 mm during the day and at night in the new moon. Of 14 species collected, ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) and mullet (Mugil cephalus) predominated in abundance. Glass eels (Anguilla japonica) occurred mainly during the night from February to May. Other fishes collected included brackish-water gobiids (Gymnogobius urotaenia, Rhinogobius giurinus, Tridentiger obscurus, and Sicyopterus japonicus), freshwater fishes (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus), and coastal marine fishes (Engraulis japonicus, Pempheris japonica, Plotosus lineatus, Takifugu niphobles, and Terapon jarbua). Ayu occurred during almost all sampling periods. They ranged principally from 55 to 100 mm total length (TL), with some fish larger than 100 mm TL collected after April. Mullet also occurred during almost all sampling periods. They ranged principally 25~58 mm TL, with some larger fish of 103~240 mm TL collected in February and April. That only a few freshwater and brackish-water fishes occurred in the study area is probably related to the freshwater systems having long been isolated from the continental systems and to the poorly developed estuaries in Jeju Island reflecting limited river discharge.

  • A specimen of Cocotropus masudai (41.2 mm in standard length), belonging to the family Aploactinidae, was firstly collected from the eastern coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea by using a fish trap in July 2011. This species is characterized by having the following morphological traits: XII, 9 dorsal fin rays; I, 8 anal fin rays; 12 pectoral fin rays; I, 3 pelvic fin rays; five preopecular spines; five sensory pores present on lower jaw and isthmus tip beyond fifth sensory pore. This species is similar to C. izuensis except for the number of preopercular spines (five in C. izuensis vs. four in C. masudai) and the anterior position of the isthmus (well beyond the fifth lower jaw sensory pore vs. the tip mostly reaching to the pore). In Korea, C. masudai can be easily distinguished from the Erisphex pottii in having the dorsal fin with nine soft rays (vs. 10~14 for Erisphex pottii), anal fin with seven soft rays (vs. 10~13) and pelvic fin with three soft rays (vs. two). We propose new Korean names, "Dot-chi-sok" and "Dot-chi" for the genus and species, respectively.
