  • Foreign outsourcing, otherwise known as off-shoring, has become a matter of intense public debate and great concern in both developed countries and developing countries. Yet, there is a lack of good data on foreign outsourcing since the early 1990's. This paper presents updated measures of foreign outsourcing for the recent period. Its main findings are that the share of foreign-sourced goods in total manufactured inputs almost doubled-from 12.4 percent to 22.7 percent between 1987 and 2003. I then look at the relationship between the measure of foreign outsourcing activity and wages in US manufacturing industries in recent years from 1998 to 2003. The results show that for all workers, the outsourcing level is statistically significantly and negatively associated with industry wage premiums. The estimate suggests that a magnitude of 0.9 - a 9% decrease in industry wage premiums tends to accompany a 10% increase in industry outsourcing level. Outsourcing has a bigger effect on the less-skilled workers-industry outsourcing level increases by 10% and industry wage premiums decrease by about 11% in the case of less-skilled workers.

  • The purpose of this study to empirical analysis of the effects of distance-decay for the relocated firms in the Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA). In addition, this study was constructed distance-decay function for the relocated firms by industrial types using a general distance-decay function. The data of relocated firms in the SMA extracted from the spatial database which was constructed in an previous research. The industrial type divided into 3 parts which are construction, manufacturing, and service. The result of empirical analysis by each industrial type of the effect of distance-decay, the explanatory power($R^2$) of the each function were all high. In the construction, the adjusted $R^2$ of the distance-decay function was 0.728, the manufacturing was 0.802 and the service was 0.812. It means the effect of distance decay for the relocated firms in construction industrial type more big than the effects of distance decay for the manufacturing and service industrial types.

  • Since the Korea-Chile FTA in 2003, eight FTAs are now in force including Korea-EU and Korea-US FTA. The government anticipate that FTAs increase the GDP of Korea. Government-related research institutes officially reports the positive economic impact in Korea. However, the report does not show that how much Busan economy is affected by the FTAs. For this reason, we study the economic effects of FTAs in Busan. We compare the trade statistics before and after the time each FTA is in force. The resulting figures show that the exports and trades of Busan with the FTA nations increased significantly after the enforcement. For example, the exports to Chile increased by 273% when we compare the three-year average trade. We also construct an econometrics model to estimate the price elasticity. The estimated elasticity of exports for manufactured goods is 1.38 while that of imports is 0.83. Among the manufacturing industry, machinery has the highest price elasticity, 1.8. The average tariff for manufactured goods is 3.9% for FTA nations, while that is 5.8% for Busan. This higher price fall in Busan is offset by the lower price elasticity to make Busan's export increase be greater than Busan's import increase. Busan's export increases by 4.8% while import increases by 3.7%. So, it is expected to be added to the annual trade surplus of approximately $107million.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify whether or not alcohol drinking patterns are associated with sleep quality. A cross-sectional study was carried out by self-administered questionnaire in May, 2017 among 553 male workers who employed in manufacturing industries in D city. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate whether or not alcohol drinking patterns (as measured by frequency, amount of alcohol per day, and amount of alcohol per week) were associated with poor sleep quality (as measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). As a result, in comparison with male workers who did not drink, the adjusted odds ratio for poor sleep quality was 0.44 (95% CI=0.232-0.845) for those who drank alcohol once a week or more, 0.31 (95% CI=0.192-0.829) for those who drank less than 1 glass daily, and 0.28 (95% CI=0.167-0.762) for those who drank 1-3 glasses daily. The results of this study suggest that some alcohol drinking patterns may affect sleep quality among male workers.

  • Recently, there has been a tendency for accidents occurring in manufacturing to lead to serious accidents and serious industrial accidents and to extend to community disasters. In accordance with the Third Plan (2015-2019) of the National Security Management Plan, the Safety Administration announces and promotes improvement measures to minimize industrial accidents and disasters. In the case of industrial accidents from KOSHA 2015 to 2017, the accident rate of the metal-related manufacturing industry is 1.57%, which is more than three times higher than the average 0.50% of all industries. As a result of investigating the causes of disasters, 72% of workers were found to be caused by unsafe behaviors. In addition, insecure behaviors are closely related to safety consciousness, and a survey on safety consciousness was conducted for workers in this field. Safety consciousness improvement has the affirmative effect on accident prevention and it is a factor to reduce accidents.

  • This paper analyzes the effects of nuclear power generation on industrial growth in using the data of 22 manufacturing sectors in 14 nuclear power countries. The hypothesis that the change in the proportion of nuclear power generation in total electricity generation affects industrial value-added and industrial output through industrial electricity price reduction was tested using the dynamic panel data model. First, it was estimated that the increase in nuclear power generation by a 1% leads to a 0.8% reduction in electricity price. The results indicate that when nuclear power generation increased by a 1% point, industrial value-added and output increased by 0.16% and 0.23%,respectively, in the short-run and by 0.51% and 0.85%, respectively, in the long-run. It was also inferred that the effect of nuclear generation on industrial competitiveness working through electricity price reduction rely on institutional settings in the electricity markets. That is, the competitive effect is greater in the countries such as U.K and Japan where electricity price is high and price volatility is large. Meanwhile, in Germany which has pursued phasing out nuclear power, industrial competitiveness is promoted through stable electricity supply.

  • This study was performed to determine the depression and its association with sleep quality, occupational stress and fatigue among small-scale manufacturing male workers. The self-administered questionnaires were given to 856 workers under 50 members of manufacturing industries during the period from April 1st to June 30th, 2010. As a results, the distribution of depression group(21 point and over at CES-D score) among all subjects were 44.3%, and it was positively correlated with occupational stress, fatigue and quality of sleep. With the analysis of covariance structure, occupational stress(KOSS) was more influential on the depression than quality of sleep and fatigue. It was found to have the inter-relational effects that the higher the occupational stress(KOSS) and fatigue(MFS), and the lower the quality of sleep, the higher the depression. Thus the effective strategy for depression reduction among workers requires the efforts to improve the work environment and job contents.
