Experimental Study on the Determination of Critical Velocity for the Case of Fire in Long Traffic Tunnels (장대 교통터널 화재시 임계속도 결정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, scaled model tests were carried out to decide the optimal critical velocity, to prevent back layering in the case of fire in a long traffic tunnel. Realistic estimates were made for the time required for people to escape ken the tunnel and far the time required by the ventilation operator to increase the system speed to full capacity. The analysis, predicts that the emergency ventilation will start about 240 seconds after the tunnel fire. It was also found that prevention of back layering would occur within 4 minutes after fan operation. To find out optimal critical velocity, a 1/50 scaled model tunnel(diameter : 0.2 m and length : 20 m) based on the Froude similarity technique was constructed. Changing $\beta$ values in the Tetzner's equation, smoke propagation was observed. From the experiment, it was concluded that using a $\beta$ value of 0.5 to prevent back layering successfully allowed time for safe evacuation.

  • In this study, we confirmed the fact that air egress velocity of pressure differential system which is installed in vestibule of smokeproof stairway in domestic high-rise building becomes back-flow into the vestibule not into the livingroom when the doors open to escape in case of fire by actual measurement. It concerned that fire smoke inflow into the vestibule of smokeproof stairway. so, reflux symptoms were developing the condition does not occur by creating an area of $2m^2$ and a model. if it‘s area is less, airflow in upper area was severely reflux. in the case upward 45 gradient of supply damper’s angle of blade, The results that reflux symptoms include upper door but bottom has some reflux. also vestibule of smokeproof stairway‘s area of $4m^2$ in the living room door in the direction of the flow distributon was normal. if a vestibule of smokeproof stairway is smaller, it designed to be performance-based design should be.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the differential pressure and velocity to prevent smoke backflow of Stairways Apartment House fire, and verified the effectiveness of smoke velocity standards proposed by NFSC 501A. Method: The smoke control design of the stairways apartment house of the real model and the performance of the velocity to prevent smoke backflow according to the window opening conditions of the living room were analyzed using the CONTAM program. Result: Although the differential pressure performance of the apartment's smoke control system was satisfactory, it was found that Performance of velocity to prevent smoke backflow did not come out according to the opening condition of the living room window. Conclusion: In the case of Stairways Apartment House, it is necessary to review the method of making exceptions to the 'velocity to prevent smoke backflow' standard required by the National Fire Safety Codes(NFSC 501A)

  • The road tunnel is a semi-closed space that is blocked on all sides except the entrance and exit, and in the event of a fire, the smoke of the fire spreads longitudinally due to heat buoyancy caused by the fire and air currents that always exist in the tunnel. To solve this problem, smoke removal facilities are installed in road tunnels to secure a safe evacuation environment by controlling the direction of movement of smoke or directly smoking at fire points. In urban areas, the service level of urban roads decreases due to the increase in traffic due to the increase in population, and as a solution, the construction of underground roads in urban areas is increasing. When a fire occurs during hydrogen leakage through TPRD of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV), the fire intensity depends on the amount of leakage, and the maximum fire intensity depends on the orifice diameter of the TPRD. Considering the TPRD orifice diameter of 1.8 mm, this study analyzed the diffusion distance of fire smoke according to the wind speed of the roadway and the opening interval of the large exhaust port when the maximum fire intensity was 15 MW. As a result, it was analyzed that air flow in the tunnel could be controlled if the wind speed of the road in the tunnel was less than 1.25 m/s, and smoke could be controlled within 200 m from the fire if the damper interval was 50 m and 100 m.

  • 도로터널은 반지하 공간으로서 환기에 많은 설비와 구조에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있으며 특히 제트팬의 경우 평상시에는 환기를 담당하고 있다. 또한 화재시에는 화재연기의 유독가스를 효과적으로 차단하는 제연역할을 함으로서 피난에 대한 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 이러한 제트팬의 특성을 정량적으로 유추하고 공학적인 QRA의 수행을 위한 기초적 연구로서 터널내부의 제트팬의 환기특성을 알아보기 위하여 모형실험체의 내부측정을 2/3까지한 전보에 이어 이번 연구에서는 터널내부전체를 측정하여 제트팬이 모형터널내에 미치는 영향을 CFD와 비교한 연구이다.

  • 고층 건물에서 혹한기에 심하게 발생하는 연돌효과는 건물 외벽 및 창문에 구조적 영향을 미치고, 제연기능을 기능을 저해하고, 승강기 문 개폐 장애와 소음 및 공조기능 장애 등 설비 기능에 부정적 영향을 미치며, 화재시 승강기 승강로 등 수직 샤프트를 통해 연기를 전파시킨다. 계단실의 상하부를 화재 시 자동으로 개방함으로써 계단실의 기류 유동 마찰을 이용하여 연돌효과를 대폭 줄일 수 있고, 승강기 승강로 또한 상하부를 개방함으로써 승강로와 거실 사이의 차압을 줄여서 연기의 전파를 막을 수 있다. 샤프트 복합효과를 이용하여 차압을 상당부분 제어할 수 있으며, 일반용 샤프트만으로 샤프트 복합효과를 일으키기에 부족한 경우에는 연돌효과 제어 전용 보조 샤프트를 검토할 필요가 있다.

  • 본 연구에서는 지하 방호공간에서 화재가 발생한 경우 워터커튼 시스템에 의한 연기의 차단효과와 화재제어 특성을 분석하였다. 이를 위해서 분사각도 $180^{\circ}$, 오리피스 직경 8.2 mm의 노즐과 지하방호 공간용 실화재 실험 장치를 제작하였으며, 화재강도 1.5 MW 기준 A급 1단위 화재 실험으로부터 온도분포와 가시도를 측정하여 연기의 차단효과를 확인하였다. 화재제어 특성을 분석하기 위해서 NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology)의 해석프로그램인 FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator)를 사용하여 동일한 실험조건에서 온도분포를 비교하였으며 노즐의 설치개수 변화에 대한 화재해석 및 실험결과로부터 워터커튼 시스템은 노즐의 설치위치와 개수, 화원으로부터의 거리, 제연 등의 설비 조건과 분사 노즐의 특성, 공급 유량 등이 중요한 상관관계를 갖고 있음을 확인하였다.

A study on prediction and improvement method of fire risk for a newly built college dormitory (신축 승선생활관의 화재 위험성 예측 및 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • As a college dormitory has the features of high dwelling density and a floating population that becomes crowded during particular times, when a disaster such as a fire occurs, it has the risk of causing much loss of life. In this study, the fire simulation program Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), is used to predict the risk when a fire occurs, to analyze the problem, and to suggest an improvement plan for a new cadet dormitory at an university in Korea. The research results are as follows. When a fire occurred in the ironing room inside the cadet dormitory, a smoke detector operated after 65 seconds. Thirteen seconds later, a sprinkler started to operate. The temperature and carbon monoxide density reached the limit value at 241 and 248 seconds, respectively. Because the limit visibility value was reached within 66 seconds after the occurrence of a fire, it is predicted that preparation must be finished and evacuation should begin within 1 minute after the fire occurs, in order to have no casualties. Synthesizing this dormitory fire risk prediction result, the visibility value is considered to be the most dangerous factor for personal safety. Because of this, installing a smoke extraction system is suggested to secure visibility. After the installation of a smoke extraction system, the problem of smoke diffusion in the corridors improved.

A Study on the Effectiveness to the Life Safety by Enlarging Smoke Vent Size and/or Sprinklered System (배연창 크기와 스프링클러 작동이 인명안전에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • Recently, evacuation safety of a resident of building become the major concern, because building has been higher and more complicated. Buildings in Korea should install the natural smoke venting or mechanical smoke exhaust equipment according to the building law. The smoke control is the most important to guarantee the evacuation safety. This study evaluate the influence to the height and temperature of smoke layer by enlarging smoke vent size and operating sprinkler system using CFAST (Version 6). Smoke venting size is larger, the effect to height and temperature of smoke layer is increased in below 5 MW fire. But, the correlation of these is decreased in above 10 MW fire. The case that opened smoke vent and sprinklered are applied, life safety criteria are satisfied regardless of fire size. After design the fire scenario according to the service and size of building. Install the smoke vent suitable for the fire size and verify that by experiment or simulation.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the development direction of fire safety through the analysis of previous researches in the field of fire fighting. To this end, 929 papers published in the Journal of Korean Institute of Fire Science and Engineering have been sorted by field of study and analyzed for frequency. Accordingly, it was confirmed that researches were conducted in the order of fire chemistry and physics, detection and extinguishing system, fire safety design and management, evacuation and human behavior. In contrast, very little research has been conducted on human behavior, fire safety education, or training. This result is discussed in the article, and suggestions for future research objectives are made.
