A brake lever in a basic railway brake system is an important safety device that delivers braking force from the brake cylinder to the brake pad. The safety guidelines for designing rolling stock only qualitatively describe that the brake lever should have sufficient strength. Each train has a different type of brake lever. One brake lever that was designed with a factor of safety of 1.27 has failed, so the material was changed to increase the strength. Therefore, the stress distribution and weak points of the lever were identified by theoretical analysis. and structural analysis. Different brake lever designs were examined for KTX high-speed trains, which have a split-type structure, as well as for electric locomotives, which use an electric multiple unit (EMU) with a unity-type structure. A fracture test was also done to look at the relationship between the vertical stress and the bending stress during braking. The results were used to find a safety factor to apply to each train and suggest quantitative minimum guidelines. We also looked at changing the unity-type EMU brake lever to the split type under the same conditions and analyzed how much the design change affected the factor of safety.
Rail vehicle brakes partly or completely transform the kinetic energy of moving vehicles into other forms of energy, in order to reduce the speed, and if necessary to bring them to a halt. To fulfil these requirements, the effect of a certain brake force is necessary and especially it is considered that the brake force is a important device to rail vehicles as a mass transit. The brake distance is a criterion for measuring brake force. The brake force is measured via dozens of brake distance test before its service operation. The brake distance is influenced by cars and rail conditions; weight of cars, speed on the verge of braking, temperature of brake disk and condition of the upper side of rail, etc. Therefore we will study how the these factors impact with the brake distance via a real test results.
This paper investigates the accuracy of vehicle pre-braking speed estimates based upon tire/roadway coefficient of friction (drag factor) measurements and skid mark measurements Data for pre-braking and pre-skidding speeds were collected to determine if there were any correlations between pre-braking speeds and pre-skidding speeds. Braking tests were performed on two vehicles using various measurement devices including a fifth wheel, a speed gun, and a vericom 2000. The vehicle speeds, braking distances, skid mark distances, and deceleration histories were recorded. From these data. coefficients of friction and vehicle pre-skidding speeds for the tested road surface were calculated. The pre-skidding speeds were then compared to the actual pre-braking speeds of the vehicles in order to establish relationships between pre-skidding and pre-braking speed. A correlation between the Pre-skidding speed and the actual pre-braking speed was established for the study data.

Recently, KTX (Korean Train Express) train stoppage accidents were mainly caused by malfunctioning equipment, aging and cracking of railway vehicles, crack breakages of brake disks, and breakages of brake disks. Breakage of brake disk can cause large-scale casualties such as high-speed collision and concern about derailment by hitting lower axle and wheel. Therefore, in this study, a brake disk with solid and ventilation type, which is the brake disk of a KTX train was modeled, and a dynamometer system was constructed to operate the disk. A Rayleigh wave was used to inspect the surface of the brake disk. An ultrasonic inspection module was developed for the brake disk by using a local immersion method due to the difficulty involved in ultrasonic inspection using an existing immersion method. In addition, the surface defects of the brake disk were evaluated using a dynamometer mock-up system and an ultrasonic inspection module of the brake disk.

The brake pad is one of the basic brake elements of a railway vehicle. It accomplishes braking action by friction between a pad and a brake disc. Because the brake pad must endure specified high pressure, the compressive strength is managed as the main performance factor. The standards for measuring the compressive strength of brake pads are KRS, KRCS, and KRT. These standards specify the size of the test piece for measuring compressive strength as $20mm{\times}10mm{\times}15mm$ ($W{\times}D{\times}H$). To reduce the uncertainty of the compressive strength, factors of uncertainty were analyzed. The results show that changing the dimensions of the cross section was useful to reduce the uncertainty. The uncertainty due to the new cross-sectional dimension shows the effectiveness of reducing uncertainty.

This study examined the clamping force control method and the braking performance test results of an electromechanical brake (EMB) using braking test equipment. Most of the studies related to EMBs have been carried out in the automotive field, dealing mainly with the static test results for various control methods. On the other hand, this study performed a dynamic performance evaluation. The three-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) was applied to drive the actuator of the EMB, and the analysis was verified by JMAG(Ver. 18.0), which is finite element method (FEM) software. The current control, speed control, and position control were used for clamping force control of the EMB, and the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control was applied to the current controller for efficient control. The EMB's emergency braking deceleration performance was tested in the same way as conventional pneumatic brake systems when the wheel of a train rotates at 110 km/h, 230 km/h, and 300 km/h. The emergency braking time, with the wheel stopped completely at the maximum rotational speed, was approximately 73 seconds. The similarity of the braking time and deceleration pattern was verified through a comparison with the performance test results of the pneumatic brake system applied to the next generation high-speed railway vehicle (HEMU-430X).

A braking algorithm for a PM synchronous motor is presented. The resistance of the stator windings operates as a braking resistors and dissipates the regenerated power from the rotor without any braking components including the electronic power components and control circuits. The proposed braking algorithm maximizes the power dissipation in the stator windings and also generates the maximum braking torque under the limit conditions of DC link capacitor voltage and inverter currents so that it can minimize the braking time.
