  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics of cyber communities composed of migrant workers from communities without propinquity in Korea. Its methods are both qualitative and quantitative. It further seeks to discover the relationship between the social capital formed and reproduced within these cyber communities and participants' cultural adaptation to Korean society. The study revealed that ethnic and non-ethnic communities differed in terms of strength of cohesion, space constraints, and links with the outside world. The former showed characteristics of a localized community type. The main motivations for migrant workers' participation in the ethnic cyber community were communication and friendship rather than cooperation and sharing among members. They usually used cyber communication media to communicate with one another. Conversely, the latter showed characteristics of an integrative type. Despite the difficulties in applying for membership and information provided in Korean, a high percentage of migrant workers participated in the community to obtain crucial information. The results did not show a significant correlation between social capital and migrant workers' traits within the cyber community, while a strong correlation emerged among four factors of social capital: faith, norms, networking, and political participation. The study showed that social capital in the cyber community was in direct proportion to an integrative type of cultural adaptation to Korean society. In particular, there was a strong connection between the cultural adaptation exhibited by members of the migrant subculture and their participation in discussions on political issues and human rights, with some migrants even functioning as agents of social change as participants in citizens' movements. The findings suggest that the cyber community facilitates the migrant subculture's communication with and integration into the indigenous Korean culture. Migrant workers' participation in the cyber community is therefore validated as an instrumental practice for members of this subculture to adapt to Korean society.

  • This study discusses the community of participants in new media-based art of Taeyoon Choi, Wafaa Bilal and Mushon Zer-Aviv in relation to current discourses on social functions of art by Nicolas Bourriaud and Jacques Ranciere. Focusing on these artists' participatory projects which aim to provide alternative perspectives on wars between countries, to raise awareness about expanding surveillance systems in city spaces, or to create new public spaces on the web, this paper argues that their works hybridize entertainment culture and political activism to suggest a new model for political art.

  • The optimization of submerged culture conditions for mycelial growth and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production in an edible mushroom Tremella fuciformis were studied in shake flasks and bioreactors. The temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and pH 8 in the beginning of fermentation in agitated flasks was the most efficient condition to obtain maximum mycelial biomass and EPS. The optimal medium constituents were as follows (g l-1): glucose 20, tryptone 2, $KH_2PO_4$ 0.46, $K_2HPO_4$ 1 and $MgSO_4H_2O$ 0.5. The fungus was cultivated under various agitation and aeration conditions in a 5L stirred-tank bioreactor. The maximum cell mass and EPS production were obtained at a relatively high agitation speed of 200 rpm and at an aeration rate of 2 vvm. The flow behavior of the fermentation broth was Newtonian and the maximum apparent viscosity (35 cP) was observed at a highly aerated condition (2 vvm). The EPS productivity in an airlift reactor was higher than that in the stirred-tank reactor. The EPS was protein-bound polysaccharides consisted of mainly mannose, xylose, and fructose. The molecular weights of EPS were determined to be $1.3{\sim}1.5{\times}10^6$.

  • Recently metropolitan cities pursue multi centric urban spatial structure for sustainable development and efficient urban management. Thus, this study calculated population potential using data on population distributed among road nodes for the last 50 years, and based on the results. We measured the spatial variability of the multi centric structure of Busan Metropolitan City. According to the results, the multi centralization process has been continued up to recently in Busan Metropolitan City. As population potential is concentrated on sub centers, Hadan, Gupo and Haeundae areas were playing an increasingly powerful role as the center of the respective district, and Sasang and Dongrae had been losing their role as the center of their respective districts since 2000 and 1990, respectively. Additionally, in all the multi centric districts except Haeundae was observed the increase of oblongity, which is the change of spatial structure in an unbalanced way toward a specific area or direction.

  • The research intends to analyse the life experiences of a Korean woman in Germany from the insider's view. Biographical data of A are analysed using Rosenthal's narrative-biographical interviews methode. Findings show that the life of A is in the process of 'becoming-work migrant woman', who jolts and 'deterritorializes' standard criteria of 'majority', which her colonize. Furthermore is analysed, that the 'becoming-work migrant women' as the construction of assemblage of 'becoming-worker', 'becoming-migrant', 'becoming-woman' is the fluid process of 'becoming-minority', which constructs constantly another assemblage of them, and is also the 'politics of difference' and the 'politics of becoming'. Based on the research results, some implications for social welfare practice are suggested.

  • In recent discussions on civil records, the term citizen records is being used instead of civil records. It is necessary to analyze the implications of using the term 'citizen record' instead of the term 'civil record'. Specifically, this paper examines how various words, including min, are understood and used in modern Korean politics and society, and the conceptual changes in relation to social changes in Korean society, so that we can name them civil records rather than civilian records. We want to find out the conceptual implications of what we do. To this end, first, we understand the concept of citizen as a historical contrast to the people, and second, we examine the meaning of citizen record management as part of citizenship. Furthermore, from the perspective of associational civic movements, we will look at village development and community movements, and consider the political and social meanings of civic records produced by citizens in their daily lives through these activities.

  • This paper aims to plan a new research program on the parallel relationship between Korean press and political power, by providing concepts on the mode of existence of professional journalists in Korea. In the midst of the economic crisis of Korean journalism, relative deteriorisation in the political democracy and the liberty of press, and changes in news ecosystem due to the revolution of digital news, the status of professional journalists is at stake. In these circumstances, this paper argues that many existing researches on journalistic professionalism need to be reconstructed in the perspective of professional project. It enables, first of all, an evaluation on actual issues of professional journalists from the actor perspective, i.e. economic interests, social closure, regulative bargain with the authority. Secondly, concerning decoupling phenomenon of journalism and democracy which became salient in the contemporary society, this study raises a necessity to create new logical relations around concepts of journalist professionalism. And we will find, in this situation, a beginning of new evaluation on the mode of existence of professional journalists, that has been possibly developped within the old, assymetric relationship between State-press. And finally, this study proposes to consider a category of professional journalists as a vehicle that helps to conceptualize the old, parallel relationship between Korean press and political power.

  • In this article I would like to propose the characteristics of "Village Council(Consejo del Pueblo)" as a sociopolitical device and institution, which maintains and encompasses all aspects of governance in a decentralized authority. A brief definition of Village Council is a "select group of people from the same village who are in charge of deciding the most important affairs of the village". The Village Council took charge of the most fundamental aspects of prehispanic Mayan society, most significantly, during the Late Postclassical era. The members of this council were respected people from the village, but not necessarily the people who held high positions within the hierarchical structure of Mayan society. It is likely that they were selected by the public in a direct way. This is the most essential bureaucratic institution in terms of the control of the political and socioeconomical affairs. The important decisions regarding legislation, the governance and jurisdiction of the village were entrusted to the council. Especially, the Village Council was responsible for monitoring and punishing the abuses of village governors. The majority of the members of the council were elders, consequently, the council was a political institution, more powerful than the governorships. The "Multepal" of Yucatán, could be an example of the Village Council during the late postclassic period.
