  • This paper reports the test results of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints with high-strength concrete. The main parameters of eight specimens were joint failure modes, the compressive strength of concrete, and the head shapes of steel bars. All specimens were designed according to ACI 352R-02 design recommendations. Two types of failure modes were considered; J-failure and BJ-failure. The longitudinal steel bars were anchored by 90 degree standard hooks or headed reinforcement. Experimental results indicated that the current ACI design recommendation limited by the compressive strength of concrete somewhat underestimated the strength of beam-column joints with high-strength concrete. In the specimens showed joint shear failure, the strength of beam-column joints with headed bars was approximately 10 percent higher than that of joints with 90 degree standard hooks.

  • This study is a fundamental research in order to establish the design code of recycled aggregate concrete structure. The structural properties of recycled aggregate concrete such as flexure, shear, fatigue, compression, and bond development are experimentally investigated and confirmed. In this study, laboratory-scale reinforced concrete beam, column, and pull-out test specimens using recycled coarse aggregate are manufactured. Then, the structural performances of recycled aggregate concrete according to replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregate are evaluated. Also, finite element analysis using commercial code DIANA is carried out to predict the test results and the analysis results are compared with test results in this study. Structural test results showed that the structural performances of recycled aggregate concrete specimens with 60% replacement ratio are reduced by approximately 15-20%. These results indicated that the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate within 30% is a suitable to use for structural members. The results of finite element analysis showed that the specimens with 30% replacement ratio possessed similar or more excellent structural performance than normal concrete specimens. However, recycled aggregate concrete with 60% replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate must be carefully considered for structural applications due to significant decrease of the failure loads.

  • Geopolymer concrete is a new class of construction materials that has emerged as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement concrete to reduce the emission of $CO_2$ in the production of concrete. Many researches have been carried out on material developments of geopolymer concrete, however a few studies have been reported on the structural use of them. This paper presents an experiment on the bond behaviors of reinforcements embedded in fly ash based geopolymer concrete. The development lengths of reinforcement for various compressive strength levels of geopolymer concrete, 20, 30 and 40 MPa, and reinforcement diameters, 10, 16 and 25 mm, are investigated. Total 27 specimens were manufactured and pull-out test according to EN 10080 was applied to measure the bond strength and slips between concrete and reinforcements. As the compressive strength levels of geopolymer concrete increase, the bond strength between geopolymer concrete and reinforcement increase. The bond strengths decrease as the diameters of reinforcements increase, which is similar in normal concrete. Also, an estimation equation for the basic development length of reinforcement embedded in geopolymer concrete is proposed based on the experimental results in this study.

  • Nuclear power plants in Korea were designed and evaluated based on the NRC's Regulatory Guide 1.60, a design response spectrum for nuclear power plants. However, it can be seen that the seismic motion characteristics are different when analyzing the Gyeongju earthquake and the Pohang earthquake that has recently occurred in Korea. Compared to the design response spectrum, seismic motion characteristics in Korea have a larger spectral acceleration in the high-frequency region. Therefore, in the case of equipment with a high natural frequency installed in a nuclear power plant, seismic performance may be reduced by reflecting the characteristics of domestic seismic motions. The failure modes of the equipment are typically structural failure and functional failure, with an anchorage failure being a representative type of structural failure. In this study, comparative analyses were performed to decide whether to consider the inelastic behavior of the anchorage or not. As a result, it was confirmed that the seismic performance of the anchorages could be increased by considering the inelastic behavior of an anchorage.

  • This paper presents the results of full-scale uplift load tests performed on 30 passive anchors grouted to various lengths at Taean site in Korea. Various rock types were tested, ranging from highly weathered to sound gneiss. Rock anchors were installed over a wide range of rock types and qualities with a fixed anchored depth of $1{\sim}4m$. The majority of installations used SD4O-D51 no high grade steel rebar to induce rock failure prior to rod failure. In many tests, rock failure was reached and the ultimate loads were recorded along with observations of the shape and extent of the failure surface. The test results, the failure mechanisms as well as uplift capacities of rock anchors depend mostly on rock type and quality, embedded fixed length, and the strength of rebar. Based on test results, the main parameters governing the uplift capacity of the rock anchor system were determined.

  • Application of resilient modulus, representing mechanical behavior of pavement materials, has become general concept for pavement design, analysis and maintenance after '86 AASHTO selected it as a basic input property of subgrade. It is known that resilient modulus of domestic subgrade soil is affected greatly by material factors, such as water content and dry weight unit, and stress components, such as deviatoric stress and confining stress, while effects of loading frequency and loading repeat were regarded negligible. If design based on resilient modulus is to be successfully implemented, design input variables of relevant models should be able to reflect local conditions. In this study, generalized mechanical model for subgrade is proposed. Model parameters are estimated from test results. Verification of the model was performed through finite element analysis using the proposed model, which showed good agreement with measured results of pavement deflections.

  • As a new system of steel pipe pile cap reinforcement, the application of perforated flat bar bolted to the steel pipe pile head was suggested for the improvement of structural performance of footing structure. This study investigates the structural characteristics of perforated flat bar shear connectors according to shape and diameter of hole, number of rebars passing through the hole and the depth of settlement. The result shows several requirements to ensure sufficient pull-out resistance and ductility such as that the hole diameter excluding diameter of rebar should exceed the size of aggregates; the hole should be perforated with diameter as the half of plate height; and the adequate depth of settlement should be ensured for the optimal performance.

  • In recent investigations, reinforced concrete beams strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS) subjected to fatigue loading were reported to be failed at the ends of CFS by its debonding. U-shaped CFS were attached to both ends of the CFS when fatigue tests on strengthened beams were conducted to delay and/or prevent fatigue failures of adhesive interface. The experimental parameters of this study were the usage of anchorage at the ends of CFS, the number of CFS layers, and the applied load levels of 60%~90% of the static ultimate load obtained from the static tests. The failure modes and the load cycle-deflection relations were observed and discussed from the experimental results. Those results also showed that the U-shaped anchoring system changes the fatigue failure modes and influences greatly on the fatigue capacity of the strengthened beams.

  • This paper presents experimental results about shear wall with various lateral reinforcement details in boundary elements. The research objective is to study the structural behavior of shear wall with boundary column confined by rectangular spiral hoops and headed cross ties developed to improve workability in the fabrication of boundary columns. These two details can be fabricated in a factory and put together on-site after being delivered so that the construction work may be reduced. Main parameters in the experimental study were the types of hoop and cross tie: rectangular spiral hoop and headed cross tie vs. standard hoop and cross tie with hook. Four half scaled shear wall specimens with babel shape were made and tested by applying horizontal cyclic load under constant axial force, 10% of nominal compressive strength of concrete. Based on the test result, it was shown that the shear wall with rectangular spiral hoop and headed cross tie in boundary columns has structural capacity compatible with conventional shear wall. The specimen SW-Hh which has bigger hoop bar and higher volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcements than other showed improved energy dissipating characteristic but it presented a rapid reduction of strength after peak point. The results indicates that, it is necessary to consider volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcements as well as hoop space in designing of shear wall with boundary columns for improved strength and ductility.
