An Analysis of Pedestrian Behavior at Crosswalks of Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 횡단보도 위치에 따른 보행자의 행태분석)

  • 일반적으로 교차로에서의 보행자 사고는 대부분이 횡단보도에서나 횡단보도 주변에서 발생하는 것이 많다. 이것은 운전자의 안전의식부족뿐만 아니라 보행자들이 교통법규를 지키지 않기 때문이다. 교통사고는 운전자나 보행자를 막론하고 안전의식 수준 및 안전시설의 질적 수준과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 특히 횡단보도 위치와 관련한 정지선에 대한 기준이 없어서 횡단보도 전후에 정지선이 2개가 설치된 곳이 많아 차량간의 사고를 유발하고, 보행자는 보행동선을 단축하기 위해 횡단보도 주변횡단이라는 위험한 행태를 유발하지만 이에 대한 연구나 대안제시가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 요인분석법이란 다변량 통계기법을 통해서 사고기록과 형태자료를 분석하였다. 사고기록은 정지선이 2개에서 1개로 변경된 25개 교차로에 대한 보행자와 차량의 유형별, 위치별, 피해정도별 사고기록을 조사 분석하고 행태분석은 현재 정지선이 2개인 곳과 기하구조가 유사한 정지선 1개인 곳을 하나의 쌍으로 해서 모두 8쌍(16개의 교차로 횡단보도)를 조사 분석하였으며, 마지막으로 설문조사를 통해서 보행자의 교통법규 준수와 인식정도에 대한 조사를 통해 보행자들의 인식과 행태조사를 통한 교통법규 준수 정도를 알아보았다. 사고자료의 분석을 통해서 첫째, 정지선이 2개인 교차로는 교차로내 차량사고, 접근부의 후면 추돌사고, 횡단보도에서 보행자사고가, 둘째, 정지선이 1개인 교차로는 유출부 차량사고가 많은 것으로 나타났으며, 행태자료의 분석을 통해서는 첫째, 정지선이 2개인 곳은 횡단보도를 이탈 또는 진입하면서 횡단하는 보행자, 점멸신호에 횡단 시작하는 보행자의 행태와 보행자 신호에 횡단보도를 통과하는 차량, 둘째, 정지선이 1개일 때는 횡단보도를 침범해서 정지하는 차량, 도로에 내려서서 기다리는 보행자가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 설문조사와 행태조사를 종합하면, 보행자들의 인식으로는 약 71%의 응답자와 점멸신호의 의미를 알고, 전체 응답자의 약 58%가 점멸신호에 건너지 않고 기다린다는 응답(교통법규준수)을 했으며, 실제 행태에서는 약 12.4%가 위반하는 것(87.6% 법규준수)으로 나타났다. 보행자들이 응답한 것보다 실제 행태에서는 더 많은 보행자가 교통법규를 준수하는 것으로 나타났으며, 횡단보도를 이용하는데 있어서 횡단보도를 침범하는 차량과 신호시간이 적다는 의견이 많았다.

Contributory Negligence Study on Traffic Accident in Area Between Crosswalk and Stop Line at Intersections (횡단보도와 횡단보도 정지선간 이격공간에서의 과실상계 연구)

  • Korea Claim Adjustor Association(KCAA) defines the near pedestrian crossing accidents as those accidents that occurred in the area within 25m from pedestrian crossing on the arterial road and within 15m from pedestrian crossing on other classes of road. Accidents between pedestrian crossing and stop line are classified as the accident near pedestrian crossing. Reviewing of current statute and court precedent, three kinds of traffic accidents which are accidents occurred in the pedestrian crossing. near pedestrian crossing and the area between pedestrian crossing and stop line. should be distinguished by different pedestrian contributory negligence. To find out how different they are. we surveyed transportation society members about the contributory negligence of traffic accidents between pedestrian crossing and stop line and the results are as follows : (1) The current two classification of pedestrian crossing accidents and near pedestrian crossing accidents should be changed to three classification of pedestrian crossing accidents that includes accidents on pedestrian crossing, near pedestrian crossing and between pedestrian crossing and the stop line. (2) For the pedestrian's contributory negligence, the least reasonability to pedestrian is accident on the pedestrian crossing. The next one is the accident between pedestrian crossing and stop line and the last is the accident near pedestrian crossing. (3) Pedestrian contributory negligence for accident by space is recommended as 〈table 8〉, 〈table 9〉, 〈table 10〉. (4) Contributory negligence rate of the accident on the pedestrian crossing during red light should be modified to be less than that of near pedestrian crossing.

A Crosswalk and Stop Line Recognition System for Autonomous Vehicles (무인 자율 주행 자동차를 위한 횡단보도 및 정지선 인식 시스템)

  • Recently, development of technologies for autonomous vehicles has been actively carried out. This paper proposes a computer vision system to recognize lanes, crosswalks, and stop lines for autonomous vehicles. This vision system first recognizes lanes required for autonomous driving using the RANSAC algorithm and the Kalman filter, and changes the viewpoint from the perspective-angle view of the street to the top-view using the fact that the lanes are parallel. Then in the reconstructed top-view image this system recognizes a crosswalk based on its geometrical characteristics and searches for a stop line within a region of interest in front of the recognized crosswalk. Experimental results show excellent performance of the proposed vision system in recognizing lanes, crosswalks, and stop lines.

A Comparative Analysis on Installation Locations of Crosswalk Markings at Signalized Intersections (교차로 내 횡단보도 설치 위치에 관한 비교 분석 연구)

  • 보행자 사고는 총 교통사고의 32.9%(사망 5,070명, 부상 87,943명)을 차지하고 있으며, 그 중 횡단보도 사고는 13.0%(사망 542명, 부상 10,056명)로 대책이 시급하다. 교차로 내에서 횡단보도의 위치가 부적절하면, 보행자 안전과 차량 교통소통에 악영향을 준다. 또한 우리 나라에선 명확한 기준이 없어 횡단보도 노면표지 설치 및 유지 관리에 어려움을 겪고 있는 실정이다. 현재 교차로에서 횡단보도의 위치는 다음과 같이 3종류로 구분할 수 있다. 1) 차량 정지선이 횡단보도 전방에 설치되어 진행 차량이 횡단보도를 통과하여 대기할 수 있는 공간이 있는 경우, 2) 횡단보도가 측면차량 진행방향의 연석선상(가각선의 끝 지점)에 근접하여 설치된 경우, 3) 횡단보도가 측면 좌·우회전 차량1대가 대기할 수 있는 공간의 약 4∼5m 후방(가각선의 시작지점)에 설치된 경우로 구분할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 차량소통 및 보행자/차량 상층에 분석하여 교차로 내 횡단보도 위치기준을 제시하는데 연구 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 통한 기대효과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다, 첫째 횡단보도 내 보행자 관련 교통사고를 예방할 수 있으며, 둘째 교차로에서 보행자 및 차량소통을 원활히 할 수 있고, 셋째 횡단보도 설치 및 관리를 효율적으로 할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • Recently, with a high level of economic growth, rapid urbanization, population, environment and housing problems were accompanied in Korea. In particular, the traffic problem has become a serious social problem. As the current transportation policy has been carried out, concentrating on traffic flow, in 2015, death rate for pedestrians while walking (1,795 persons) is 38.8% compared to entire death rate in car accident (4,621 persons), so there is need to solve it. Although, crosswalk should make pedestrian cross it safely, it has been made on the basis of the width of road without exact standard for current width of the crosswalk and the location of stop line. Moreover, in the area around many campuses or commercial facilities, crosswalks are set with not considering pedestrian passage, but designed uniformly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate reasonable dimension of crosswalk considering pedestrian traffic and walking speed and it makes the accident rate lower in the crosswalk, which has a lot of problems including decisions of vehicle traffic signal time, lack of pedestrian's signal timing, pedestrian's crossing of long-distance. The following are the methodology of the study. Firstly, for crosswalk calculation of specifications, examination relating existing regulations and researches dealing with crosswalk, pedestrians and stop line is needed. After analyzing problems of current width of crosswalk and stop line, present the methodology to calculation of specifications and basing on these things, calculation of specifications for crosswalk will be decided. In conclusion, the calculation of specification and improvement of stop line for crosswalk laid out in this study are expected to be utilized as base data in case of establishing relevant safety facilities and standards.

  • In spite of that stop line and crosswalk should be aware of the most basic objects in transportation system, its features extracted are very limited. In addition to image-based recognition technology, laser and RF, GPS/INS recognition technology, it is difficult to recognize. For this reason, the limited research in this area has been done. In this paper, the algorithm to recognize the stop line and crosswalk is designed and implemented using image-based recognition technology with the images input through a vision sensor. This algorithm consists of three functions.; One is to select the area, in advance, needed for feature extraction in order to speed up the data processing, 'Region of Interest', another is to process the images only that white color is detected more than a certain proportion in order to remove the unnecessary operation, 'Color Pattern Inspection', the other is 'Feature Extraction and Recognition', which is to extract the edge features and compare this to the previously-modeled one to identify the stop line and crosswalk. For this, especially by using case based feature comparison algorithm, it can identify either both stop line and crosswalk exist or just one exists. Also the proposed algorithm is to develop existing researches by comparing and analysing effect of in-vehicle camera installation and changes in recognition rate of distance estimation and various constraints such as backlight and shadow.

Development of Design Criteria for Crosswalks at Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 횡단보도 설치기준에 관한 연구)

  • There are no specific criteria deciding what type of crosswalk installs although 4 typed crosswalks at signalized intersections classify according to number of stop line, spacing from the border of intersections and existence of traffic islands or not. Accidents involving pedestrians at signalized intersections are classified by type of crosswalks by traffic volume, pedestrian volume at crosswalk, intersection geometry and phase in view of pedestrians' safety at 50 intersections in Gwangju. The Multiple regression models are applied to express the pedestrian accident rate. In addition, process deciding what type of crosswalk installs which includes accident rate involved pedestrian is changed into number of accident is represented to reduce number of accidents. This paper presents what type of crosswalk installs in order to reduce pedestrian involved accidents at new or existing crosswalk.

The Characteristics and the Causal Analysis of Elderly Pedestrians` Road Crossing Accidents (노인 횡단사고의 특성 및 원인분석)

  • 심각한 노인교통사고를 줄이기 위하여 가장 높은 점유율을 보이는 노인보행자의 횡단사고 유형, 특성 및 사고원인을 분석했다. 횡단사고의 약 60%가 횡단보도 및 그 부근에서 발생했고, 70%이상이 노인여성이었으며, 절반정도가 야간에 발생했고 피해정도는 치사율이 12%, 부상은 평균 6주의 중상이었다. 사고원인은 특히 횡단보도 및 그 부근에서의 운전미확인이 가장 많았고, 노인보행자측의 원인은 고의위반 또는 법의 부지가 가장 많았다. 노인보행자의 횡단사고를 줄이기 위해서 운전자에게 횡단보도 정지선 엄수, 횡단보도 부근뿐 아니라 생활도로 및 상업지역 도로에서의 철저한 안전확인 등의 교육, 홍보, 훈련이 필요하다. 노인보행자를 위한 훈련프로그램은 성별로는 특히 노인여성에게 집중적 훈련이 요구되며, 훈련내용으로는 야간횡단의 위험성 인식 및 반사재 부착, 안전한 횡단장소 선택 및 횡단절차의 훈련, 상대방은 운전자와의 의사소통 훈련 등이 중점적으로 개발되어야 한다.

The Study on the Correlation between Traffic Signal Location and Stop Line Observance (신호기위치와 정지선 준수율과의 관계 연구)

  • The Korea National Police Agency launched a campaign to encourage drivers in stop line observance and to discourage stop line violation by intensively imposing fines. It was to increase stop line observance of drivers and thus traffic safety. According to statistics, the stop line observance rate was increased over 80 % of drivers during the campaign but regressed to the past after the campaign. This paper delivers the effect of the location of traffic signal lights on driver's stop line observance and develops a guideline to improve highway traffic environment in long terms. Statistical tests conducted based on field data showed that the drivers' stop line observance increases when traffic signal lights are closely installed from a stop line. It was proposed from the study that traffic signal lights be installed $10{\sim}20m$ from a stop line.

Stop-Line and Crosswalk Detection Based on Blob-Coloring (블럽칼라링 기반의 횡단보도와 정지선 검출)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to detect the stop line and crosswalk on the road surface using edge information and blob coloring. The detection has been considered as an important area of autonomous vehicle technologies. The proposed algorithm is composed of three phases: 1) hypothesis generation of stop lines, 2) hypothesis generation of crosswalks, and 3) hypothesis verification of stop lines. The last two phases are not performed if the first phase does not provide a hypothesis of a stop line. The last one is carried out by the combination of both hypotheses of stop lines and crosswalks, and determines the stop lines among stop line hypotheses. The proposed algorithm is proven to be effective through experiments with various images captured on the roads.
