  • This study was carried out to analyze the community structure and distribution of macrobenthos in Hakampo sandy shore. As for the environmental factors of sampling stations, the average grain size of the sediments from the sampling stations was $2.37{\phi}$ with the range of $1.90{\phi}{\sim}2.52{\phi}$, which represents the typical medium sand sedimentary facies of sandy beach. The average sediment organic content was 1.15% with the range of 0.90%~1.46%. Most stations had low sediment organic content which is typical of sandy beach. The number of species were total 59 from 6 taxa and the individuals was $668inds./m^2$ in the 10 stations of the study area. Based on the Bray-Curtis similarity analysis, the 10 stations of the study area were broadly divided into 3 groups. The highest part of intertidal zone was St. 2~St. 4, the middle part of intertidal zone was St. 5~St. 8, and the lower part of intertidal zone was St. 9~St. 10. A spatial community structure was observed which is divided into the highest, middle, and lower parts.

  • Community structure of macrobenthos was studied in Chinhae Bay, a southern coastal area of Korea. Sampling was conducted bimonthly using a Smith-McIntyre grab ($0.05 m^2$) at eight stations from January to November, 1998. A total of 237 species were sampled. It was comprised of annelids ($80 spp. 33.8{\%}$), arthropods (80 spp.), molluscs (47 spp.), echinoderms (16 spp,) and others, Mean density of individual was $1,939 ind./m^2$ and mean biomass was $171.6 gwwt/m^2$. Annelids were a density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of $1,533 ind./m^2$ which occupied $79.0{\%}$ of the total individual of benthic animals. Molluscs were represented as a biomass-dominant group with a mean biomass of $95.9 gwwt/m^2$ ($55.9{\%}$ of total biomass). The major density-dominant species were a bivalve Theora fratilis ($110 ind./m^2$) and five species of polychaetes, Lumbrineris longifolia ($417 ind./m^2$), Chaetozone setosa ($145 ind./m^2$), Sigambra tentaculata ($128 ind./m^2$), Cirratulus cirratus ($128 ind./m^2$), and Paraprionospio pinnata ($103 ind./m^2$). Cluster analysis showed that the study area could be divided into two station groups and two stations. According to the feeding guild of polychaetes, four feeding guilds were found, and the major ones were surface deposit-feeders, burrowing deposit-feeders, surface suspension-feeders, carnivore.

  • Macrobenthic fauna were studied on a tidal flat in Garolim Bay in July 2002, in order to understand their spatial distribution with the surface sediment types. Forty-nine stations were set on the tidal flat. A total of 147 species was sampled with the mean density of $1,140ind./m^2$ and the mean biomass of $157.2g/m^2$. The polychaetes were speices- and density-dominant faunal group with 64 species and the mean density of $791ind./m^2$. Mollusks were biomass-dominant faunal group with $132.0g/m^2$. Major dominant species were two polychaetes, Mediomastus californiensis with the mean density of $374ind./m^2$ and Heteromastus filiformis with $224ind./m^2$. Also mollusks such as Umbonium thomasi, Batillaria cumingi and Ruditapes philippinarum was relatively high in the mean density, showing the density of 45, 42, $32ind./m^2$ respectively. Especially, U. thomas was distributed in the mouth of the bay, where sediment grain size is rather coarse, and R. philippinarum at near tidal channel. Based on the cluster analysis, the macrobenthic community on the tidal flat was classified into seven station groups depending on the benthic environmental parameters(sediment types). Compared with other Korean tidal flats, species richness of Garolim tidal flats is more and less low.

  • In order to find out the short-term phytoplankton dynamics during summer season in Jinhae Bay, we investigated the environmental factors and phytoplankton population densities at 16 stations. A total of 66 phytoplankton species were appeared, diatoms occupied more than 80% of total species, and the others were dinoflagellates and raphidophyceaes. The dominant species were diatoms Chaetoceros affinis, C. didymus, C. pseudocurvisetus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pseudonitzchia pungens, Skeletonema costatum and dinoflagellates Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gymnodinium impudicum, Karenia mikimotoi, Prorocentrium minimum, Protoperidinium bipes and Scrippsiella trochoidea. According to multidimensional scaling (MSD) and cluster analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the Jinhae bay was divided into two groups. The first group included stations in the inner part of Masan Bay, which is strongly influenced by high nitrogen loading and low salinity by river discharge. The second group included the other remained stations. Based on canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), small-size dinoflagellates K. mikimotoi, P. minimum, P. bipes and S. trochoidea and centric diatom C. pseudocurvisetus and S. costatum, which is dominanted in the inner area of bay, were related with DIN (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite). These results imply that the study area was grouped into the two water masses (inner and outer water of Masan Bay) and inner waters had higher phytoplankton abundances and Chl.a concentration than outer waters. As a result, summer phytoplankton peaks in the inner shallow bay were stimulated by increases in nitrogen and temperature.

  • To elucidate whether or not solvent-tolerant bacteria use anti-oxidative defense systems to defend themselves against toxic solvents, oxidative enzyme activity and total anti-oxidative capacity (T-AOC) were investigated in two tolerant strains of Pseudomonas sp. under toluene stress. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of solvent tolerant BCNU 106 exhibited relatively increased levels at a toluene concentration of 100 mg/l, where those of solvent tolerant BCNU 171 increased at 200 mg/l. A greater than three-fold increase in catalase (CAT) levels was observed at concentrations of 200 and 300 mg/l in BCNU 106, and a two-fold increase was monitored at the same concentrations in BCNU 171. High glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels were also observed in the solvent tolerant bacteria. Higher levels of T-AOC was expressed in the solvent tolerant strains than in the ordinary non-tolerant KACC 10266. The highest plateau of SOD in BCNU 171 was observed at 1 hr of toluene exposure. CAT levels plateaued at 1 hr and 14 hr in BCNU 106 and reached the highest plateau at 3 hr in BCNU 171. The highest peak of T-AOC occurred at 9 hr in BCNU 106, and two high peaks occurred in BCNU 171, at 1 hr and at 9 hr of toluene exposure. The solvent-tolerant bacteria showed active antioxidant responses and could survive under harsh environments, including the presence of solvents, through means of antioxidant defense systems.

  • The present study was carried out to clarify the distribution of rotifera with salinity variation during the period from February 1998 to July 1999. Rotifera consists of 27 genera and 88 species, from the maximum occurrence of 39 species in November, 1998 to the minimum of 21 species March, 1998. With 32 dominant species, Keratella cochlearis cochlearis, K. cochlearis f. tecta, Ascomorpha saltans saltans and Asplanchna (s. str.) priodonta priodonta occurred predominantly. Distribution of Rotifera related to salinity showed that 36 species occurred in the freshwater zone, 3 species in the mixo-oligohaline zone ($0.5{\sim}5.0%_o$) and mixo-mesohaline zone ($5.1{\sim}28.0%_o$) respectively, on the other hand 2 species (Asplanhna (s. str.) priodonta priodonta, Synchaeta oblonga) in all zones. Average abundance by salinity ranged from $1,273\;ind./m^3$ ($25.0{\sim}28.0%_o$ to $16,259\;ind./m^3$ ($15.1{\sim}20.0%_o$. The percentage composition calculated effect by stepwise multiple regression of the pearson correlation coefficient value of environmental factors and Rotifera abundance (station $1{\sim}4$) revealed that it was 74.32% in BOD, 72.15% in COD, 69.77% in conductivity, 65.87% in $Cl^-$ and 58.27% in chlorophyll a. Also, (Station $5{\sim}12$) revealed 9.11% in $Cl^-$, 7.67% in TP and 6.20% in chlorophyll a.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate both temporal and spatial dynamics of phytoplankton community and environmental parameters in a newly made reclaimed esturine lake (L. Hwaong). Monthly sampling was conducted at 4 sites covering the longest transect of longitudinal gradient of the lake from June to November, 2002. Total 5 classes 8 orders 26 families 83 genus 192 species were identified at all study sites during the study period. Phytoplankton total cell density ranged 24${\sim}$ 1,882 cells $mL^{-1}$ and highly varied both temporally and spatially. Total cell density was significantly related with salinity, pH, BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP concentration. Diatom density also was significantly correlated with salinity, SS, BOD, COD and TN concentration, Although there was spatial difference, a longtudinal gradient appeared in phytoplankton cell density, Chl-a, TN and TP concentration from the mouth of river in June and August. In conclusion, phytoplakton community structure was dominated by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), and appeared to be largely influenced by salinity, precipitation, and nutrients during the summer and the fall.

  • A wh-phrase in an embedded sentence may have either an embedded or a matrix scope. Interpretation of a wh-phrase with a matrix scope has tended to be syntactically unacceptable unless the sentence reads with a wh-intonation. Previous studies have found two differences in prosodic characteristics between sentences with matrix and embedded scopes. Firstly, peak F0s in wh-phrases produced with an F0 compression wh-intonation are higher than those in indirect questions, and peak F0s in matrix verbs are lower than those in sentences with embedded scope. Secondly, a substantial F0 drop is found at the end of embedded sentences in indirect questions, whereas no F0 reduction at the same point is noticed in sentences with a matrix scope produced with a high plateau wh-intonation. However, these characteristics were not found in our experiment. This showed that a more compelling difference exists in the values obtained from subtraction between the peak F0s of each word (or a word plus an ending or case marker) and the F0s at the end of the word. Specifically, the gap between the peak F0 in a word composed with an embedded verb and the F0 at the end of the word, which is a complementizer in Korean, is large in embedded wh-scope sentences and low in matrix wh-scope sentences.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm that proves an NP-complete 4-color theorem by employing a linear time complexity where $O(n)$. The proposed algorithm accurately halves the vertex set V of the graph $G=(V_1,E_1)$ into the Maximum Independent Set (MIS) $\bar{C_1}$ and the Minimum Vertex Cover Set $C_1$. It then assigns the first color to $\bar{C_1}$ and the second to $\bar{C_2}$, which, along with $C_2$, is halved from the connected graph $G=(V_2,E_2)$, a reduced set of the remaining vertices. Subsequently, the third color is assigned to $\bar{C_3}$, which, along with $C_3$, is halved from the connected graph $G=(V_3,E_3)$, a further reduced set of the remaining vertices. Lastly, denoting $C_3$ as $\bar{C_4}$, the algorithm assigns the forth color to $\bar{C_4}$. The algorithm has successfully obtained the chromatic number ${\chi}(G)=4$ with 100% probability, when applied to two actual map and two planar graphs. The proposed "four color algorithm", therefore, could be employed as a general algorithm to determine four-color for planar graphs.

  • During a long journey of agricultural products from the production area to markets, the quality of agricultural products was always affected by some degree of vibration. The vibration input during the transportation may cause serious agricultural product injury, and this damage is particularly severe whenever the vegetable inside package is free to bounce, and is vibrated at its resonant frequency. The objectives of this study were to determine the resonant frequency of the oriental melon and to investigate the relationships between resonant frequency and physical properties of the oriental melon such as mass, volume and major and minor axes. In this study vibration testing device was constructed to determine the vibration response of the oriental melon in frequency ranges of 5 to 150 Hz. The computer program for controlling the vibration shaker and the function generator and measuring the vibration characteristics of the oriental melon was developed. The ranges of resonant frequency and peak acceleration at resonance of the oriental melon were 51 to 73 Hz and 1.24 to 1.92 G-rms, respectively. The resonant frequency and the peak acceleration decreased with the increase of the sample mass, volume, major and minor axes of the oriental melon. Multiple regression models for resonant frequency and peak acceleration of the oriental melon as a function of mass, major axis and minor axis of the sample were developed and analyzed.
