  • A local remeshing algorithm using Delaunay property is developed for the analysis on the phenomenon of quasi-static crack propagation, which is a typical problem of accompanying constantly varying geometry. The algorithm performs both remeshing and refinement. The use of M-integral is demonstrated to simulate crack propagation under mixed mode with the edge spalling problem.

  • This paper is devoted to a convergence study of the nonlocal integral operator in peridynamics. The implicit formulation can be an efficient approach to obtain the static/quasi-static solution of crack propagation problems. Implicit methods require constly large-matrix operations. Therefore, convergence is important for improving computational efficiency. When the radial influence function is utilized in the nonlocal integral equation, the fractional Laplacian integral equation is obtained. It has been mathematically proved that the condition number of the system matrix is affected by the order of the radial influence function and nonlocal horizon size. We formulate the static crack problem with peridynamics and utilize Newton-Raphson methods with a preconditioned conjugate gradient scheme to solve this nonlinear stationary system. The convergence behavior and the computational time for solving the implicit algebraic system have been studied with respect to the order of the radial influence function and nonlocal horizon size.

  • A semi-monocoque truncated cone structure, which is a main structure for the payload adapter of KSLV-I, was designed. Static test was performed to confirm the reliability of the cone structure under the design loads. Strains and displacements are measured during four load cases; the compressive axial, pure bending, pure shear, and combined loading conditions. The results showed that the cone structure satisfies the design requirements. An equivalent axial load was applied to the cone structure so that the global buckling of the cone structure occurred. The measured buckling load was compared with the predicted one by finite element method. The results show a good agreement.

  • The response displacement method is the most frequently used method for seismic design of underground structures. This method is pseudo-static method, and the evaluations of velocity response spectrum of seismic base and response displacement of surrounding soil are the most important steps. In this study, the evaluation of velocity response spectrum of seismic base according to the Korean seismic design guide and the simple method of calculating the response displacement were studied. It was found that velocity response spectrum of seismic base can be estimated by directly integrating the ground-surface acceleration response spectrum of soil type S$_A$, and the evaluation of the response displacement using double cosine method assuming two layers of soil profile shows the advantages in the seismic design.

  • For the lateral load resistance of a RC frame in a medium risk seismic zone, the strength of lower story beams and columns should be larger than those of the upper stories. However, the lateral loads can be accommodated by redistributing design beam moments vertically as well as horizontally so all beams end up with identical strengths. This paper looks at the impact of the vertical redistribution of beam moments to provide identical beam strength over as many floors as possible. Two-bay six-story RC frame was designed with and without vertical beam moment redistribution and its seismic performance were evaluated by using push-over limit analysis and by non-linear time history dynamic analysis. Analytical results show that with the use of vertical beam moment redistribution the increase in the ductility demand is similar to the proportion of moment redistribution applied, but this additional demand is below the ductility capacity of well detailed RC members.

  • Unbond brace hysteretic dampers are generally used to prevent or decrease structural damage in building structures subjected to strong earthquake by its energy dissipating hysteretic behavior. In the study, a straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers was developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria was obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbond braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study has been performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield stress of the unbond brace. The procedure was applied to 5-story and 10-story steel frames for verification of the proposed method. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with unbond braces supplied in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the given target displacement.

  • In this paper an enhanced quadratic finite element for static and dynamic analysis of plate structures is presented. The performance of a proposed plate element is improved by the coupled use of non conforming displacement modes, the selective integration scheme, and the assumed shear strain fields. An efficient direct modification method is also applied to this element to solve the problem such as failure of the patch test due to the adoption of non conforming modes. The proposed quadratic finite element does not show any spurious mechanism and does not produce shear locking phenomena even with distorted meshes. It is shown that the results obtained by this element converged to analytical solutions very rapidly tough numerical tests for standard benchmark problems. It is also noted that this element is applicable to transient dynamic analysis of Mindlin plates.

  • The GF(Gust Factor) method is usually used as a method to evaluate equivalent static wind loads for general structures. The GF method is performed on the assumption that the shape of the equivalent static wind load profile is typically similar to that of mean wind loads. The shape of fluctuating wind loads could be quite different with that of the mean wind loads in case of large-span structures. So, the effect of higher modes as well as first mode must be considered to evaluate the wind loads. In this study, the ACS (Advanced Conditional Sampling) method is suggested to evaluate of equivalent static wind loads after investigating about GF and LRC method. The An method ran derive effective static wind loads by combining wind pressures and inertia forces of a structure chosen at a maximum load effect. The maximum load effect is assessed with the time history analysis using pressure data measured in wind tunnel tests. Equivalent static wind loads evaluated using ACS, GF, and LRC methods are compared to verify the effectiveness of ACS method.

  • This paper proposes a simple and effective method for determining the dynamic characteristics of revolution shells. This is a weighted residual method in which the collocation points are taken at the roots of orthogonal polynomial. In this paper the collocation method is employed to replace a partical differential eqations by a system of ordinary differential equations in time, and the resulting equations are solved by two different numerical methods of time integration : an implicit method and an explicit method. The proposed approach is formulated in some detail. The versatility and accuracy are illustrated through several numerical examples. The method appears to be relatively easy to set up and gives satisfactory results.
