Purpose: This study was performed to determine the difference or temporal-spatial gait asymmetry ratio according to static pelvic inclination level in hemiplegic patients. Methods: The subjects were 25 hemiplegic patients who was experienced stroke on MCA territory. Gait parameters and static pelvic inclination were recorded by $GAITRite^{(R)}$ system and radiologic PACS. The subjects were divided into three group according to static pelvic inclination. In the group I, the subjects have static pelvic inclination below $58^{\circ}$. The group II has $58^{\circ}{\sim}62^{\circ}$ or static pelvic inclination and the group m has over $62^{\circ}$ or static pelvic inclination. The data or three groups were analysed with ANOVA. Results: In comparison or single support time asymmetry ratio among 3 groups, the score or group II was significantly higher than the other groups(p<0.05). But the swing time asymmetry ratio was not significant(p>0.05). Conclusion: Asymmetry ratio of single support time was statistically significant by static pelvic inclination level. But asymmetry ratio or group II was the highest among three groups. It means that the patients or normal range of pelvic inclination was showed the most asymmetry or gait. And swing time asymmetry ratio was not significant among three groups. Even if the patient has normal ranged static pelvic inclination, it doesn't suggest that the patient has low gait asymmetry.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of a virtual reality-based exercise program on the functional recovery of balance and gait in chronic stroke subjects. Methods: A total of 42 chronic stroke patients were enrolled in this study. The participants were allocated randomly to 2 groups: a VR (n=22) and control group (n=20). Both groups received treadmill training for 3 sessions (10 minutes each), 30 minutes per week over a 6 week period. The VR group practiced additional virtual reality programs consisting of 3 programs for 10 minutes each. The data was analyzed using a paired t-test and independent t-test to determine the statistical significance. Results: The virtual reality-based exercise group showed significant increases in gait velocity, cadence and stride length compared to the control group (p<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in static balance. Conclusion: These results support the perceived benefits of exercise programs that incorporate virtual reality to augment the balance and ambulation of stroke patients. Therefore, virtual reality is feasible and suitable for stroke patients
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an obstacle height on the balance control of older adults while stepping over an obstacle from a position of quiet stance. Methods: Fifteen community-dwelling healthy older adults (mean age, $74.4\pm4.27$ yrs; age range, 67-82 yrs) volunteered to participate in this study. The subjects performed gait initiation (GI) and they stepped over obstacles of two different heights (10 cm and 18 cm) at a self-paced speed from a position of quiet stance. Their performance was assessed by recording the changes in the displacement of the COP in the anteroposterior (A-P) and mediolateral (M-L) directions using a force platform. Results: The M-L displacement of the COP significantly increased for an 18 cm obstacle height condition as compared to the GI and a 10 cm obstacle height condition (p<0.01). Furthermore, the M-L displacement of the COP for a 10 cm high obstacle was significantly greater for that for the GI (p<0.01). However, the mean of the A-P displacement of the COP was similar between the stepping conditions for the A-P displacement of the COP (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the M-L COP displacement could be a better parameter to identify the dynamic balance control in older adults when negotiating obstacles.

Purpose : This study was designed to identify the effects of carrying bag positions (None, left hand, right hand, left shoulder, right shoulder) on static balance. Methods : Fourteen healthy adult females participated in the this study. The exclusion criteria were orthopedic or neurologic disease, predominant left side. Measurements were performed initial effects. Results were evaluated by OSI, APSI, and MLSI in the biodex stability system. Results : There are among the three assessments (overall stability index(OSI), antero-posterior stability index (APSI), medio-lateral stability index(MLSI) significants difference for the carrying bags positions (None bag, left hand, right hand, left shoulder, right shoulder)(p<.05). The post-hoc test revealed a significant difference between none bag and both left hand and left shoulder in the OSI, APSI, MLSI (p<.05). Also, comparing the carrying positions significant difference between right hand and both left hand and left shoulder in the MLSI (p<.05). Conclusion : The results suggest that none dominant side with carrying bag improve more imbalance than none bag and right hand of dominant with carrying bag improve more balance than non dominant side. When comparing the four carrying bag conditions, right hand was more effective than another conditions in static balance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of static balance performance on gait in elderly. Subjects were twenty four members living in Gwangju(12males, 12females), between 65 and 81 years of age. The Force platform was used to measured static balance performance and gait analyzed the 3-D Motion Analysis The results of this study were as follow ; 1. The postural sway showed, The mean value of toe-heel was $1.41\pm0.51cm$ and left-right was $063\pm0.20cm$. In gait analysis, the mean value of each variable were swing phase $40.5\pm9.65\%$, stance phase $59.5\pm9.65\%$, stride length 0.79m, cadence $0.83\pm0.44step/sec$, velocity $0.57\pm0.32m/sec$, Knee up $34.7\pm31.0^{\circ}$, Knee down $-53.6\pm40.14^{\circ}$. Ankle up $12.14\pm13.94^{\circ}$, Ankle down $-16.8\pm25.0^{\circ}$ showed. 2. The correlation matrix between L-R sway and Toe-heel sway and gait variables was not showed. 3. In multiple regression test, there were no related variable.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies for avoiding moving and stationary walker using body segments during walking. Method: Ten healthy young adults (10 males, age: $24.40{\pm}0.49yrs$, height: $175.80{\pm}5.22cm$, body mass: $70.30{\pm}5.22kg$) participated in this study. Each participant was asked to perform a task to avoid collisions with another walker who was moving or stationary during walking on the 10 m walkway. Both walkers were performed at natural self-selected walking speed. Results: Medio-lateral avoidance displacement of the trunk and the pelvis were significantly increased when avoiding a stationary walker (p<.05). There were no significant differences in medio-lateral center of mass trajectory. Rotation angle of trunk, pelvis and foot on the vertical axis were significantly increased when avoiding a stationary walker (p<.05). Conclusion: Based on our results, when another walker moves continuously, the walker recognizes another walker as the object of social interaction and performs the avoidance strategies while expecting the cooperative distance. On the other hand, when another walker is stopped, it is determined that the walker has an obligation to avoid, and the walker performs a relatively safer avoidance strategy.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mobile phone text messaging on the collision avoidance strategy for an approaching and stationary pedestrian. Method: Eighteen healthy young adults participated in this study. Each participant was asked to perform a task to walking with/without mobile phone text messaging and a task to avoid collisions with another pedestrian who was approaching or stationary during walking. Results: When text messaging with avoidance collision, it showed an early onset time, a larger mediolateral COM trajectory, trunk rotation angle and trunk rotation velocity (p<.05). Also, compared to an approaching pedestrian, when avoiding collision with a stationary pedestrian, it showed a later onset time, a lager avoidance displacement, mediolateral COM trajectory, trunk rotation angle (p<.05). Conclusion: Results suggest that mobile phone text messaging while collision avoidance leads to delay the perception stage and alters the adaptation stage. Consequently, pedestrian executed in an exaggerated avoidance action to create a greater safety margin when attending to mobile phone test messages while avoiding another pedestrian.

Objective : The aim of this study is to prove the effects of mental practice in balance ability of elderly population, and to investigate the possibility of application as an effective intervention method for fall prevention. Methods : This study provided mental practice to 3 subjects over 65 years old who have experienced fall, but do not have cognitive dysfunctions and independent in gait without any use of assistive devices from July to October, 2013. Within the individual case study, 4 sessions of initial baseline process (A), 5 sessions of mental practice (B), 4 sessions of re-initial baseline process (A') were proceeded using ABA design. Independent variable used mental practice for enhancing balance ability and fall efficacy in elderly population, and dependent variable were Berg Balance Scale (BBS) to find out the change in overall balance ability, Fall Efficacy Scale (FES) to see the change in fall efficacy, One-Leg Standing test(OLS), and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) to determine the changes in both static and dynamic balance. Analysis of the results were provided via mean value and graph. Results : After the application of mental practice method, all of the subjects have shown increase in fall efficacy baseline values, and in addition, overall balance ability and both static and dynamic balances either increased or maintained. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that mental practice has positive effects on fall efficacy improvement and maintenance in elderly, thereby suggesting mental practice for fall prevention in elderly populations.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was to measure the standing balance symmetry of stroke patients using a force-plate with computer system, and to investigate the correlation between the standing balance symmetry and that of the walking function in stroke patients. Methods: 48 patients with stroke (34 men, 14 women, $56.8{\pm}11.72$ years old) participated in this study. Static standing balance was evaluated by the weight distribution on the affected and the nonaffected lower limbs, sway path, sway velocity, and sway frequency, which reflected the characteristic of body sway in quiet standing. Dynamic standing balance was evaluated by anteroposterior and mediolateral sway angle, which revealed the limit of stability during voluntary weight displacement. Symmetry index of static standing balance, (SI-SSB) calculated by the ratio of the affected weight distribution for the nonaffected weight distribution, and symmetric index of dynamic standing balance (SI-SDB) by the ratio of the affected sway angle for the nonaffected sway angle. Functional balance assessed by a Berg balance scale (BBS), and the functional walking by 10m walking velocity, as well as the modified motor assessment scale (mMAS). Results: Static balance scales and SI-SSB was the only correlation with BBS (p<0.05). Dynamic balance scales and SI-DSB, not only was correlated with BBS, but also with 10m walking velocity and mMAS (p<0.01). Additionally, there was a significant difference between SI-SSB and that of SI-DSB (p<0.01). Conclusion: The balance and the walking function relate to real life in the stroke showed strong relationships with the dynamic standing balance symmetry in the frontal plane and the ability of anterior voluntary weight displacement in sagittal plane.
