  • Higher cognitive functions refer to the highest level of human intellectual functioning, including concept formation, reasoning, and executive functions. The executive functions can be conceptualized as having four components : volition, planning, purposive action, and effective performance. Because higher cognitive functions represent the most advanced stages of intellectual development, they are often highly susceptible to the effects of brain injuries and mental disorders. The ability to perform effectively within the environment is determined in large part by an individual's adequacy in performing such higher-order functions. Especially executive functions are necessary for appropriate, socially responsible, and effectively self-serving adult conduct. Threfore, an assessment of the psychiatric patient's performance in these areas will provide useful diagnostic information, as well as information concerning social and vocational prognosis.

  • Disturbances in memory are the most common problem in patients with an organic mental syndrome. Other patients with significant psychiatric disorders also often have difficulty with memory. So it is very important in the clinical practice of psychiatry to understand the biological and neurocognitive mechanisms of memory proessing, and to develop the assessment tools with which memory function can be evaluated reliably and validly. Moreover, memory researches provide an important viewpoint from which we can understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of major neuropsychiatric illnesses. This article focuses on our understanding of memory functions in clinical and neurobiological aspects. The relevant material will be presented in four parts : 1) terminologies needed in defining major stages of various types of memory processing : 2) neurochemical and neuroanatomical basis of memory processing : 3) brief bed-side screening tests and more comprehensive neuropsychological tests for the evaluation of memory function : 4) the characteristics of memory dysfunction in several major psychiatric illnesses.

  • Objective : This study aimed to analyze the association between lifestyle and medical expenses of older adults with mental illness using claims data. Methods : We conducted secondary data analysis using the older adult cohort database provided by the Korea National Health Insurance Service. The lifestyle and medical expense variables were extracted from the cohort database. We used a generalized linear model to examine the association between lifestyle and medical expenses. Results : In total, 32,853 records were extracted. The results showed that smokers had medical expenses (estimate = -218,255, p = .037). As the number of days of walking increased, medical expenses significantly decreased (estimate = -58,843, p < .0001). Furthermore, as the number of days of drinking decreased, medical expenses increased (estimate = 692,289, p < .0001). Conclusion : This study analyzed the estimates of medical expenses according to lifestyle among older adults with mental illness. Smoking and exercise were negatively associated with medical expenses. These results suggest the importance of a healthy lifestyle for older adults with mental illness. In addition, this study can be used as clinical evidence for lifestyle management programs to improve physical and mental health.

  • This study was conducted to identify sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behavior that are perceived by psychiatric patients, and analyzes their differences and relations. Participants were 222 adult psychiatric patients hospitalized in two psychiatric hospitals located at K city of J province. Data were collected from March 11 to April 15, 2016 by using structured questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed through independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. The mean score of sexual knowledge was 2.60, sexual attitude was 2.74, and sexual behavior was 0.49. The sexual knowledge of patients differed significantly according to parent attitude(${\rho}$<.01), and sexual behavior showed the difference according to diagnosis(${\rho}$<.05). Sexual knowledge had a significant positive correlation with sexual attitude(r=.75, ${\rho}$<.001) and sexual behavior(r=.15, ${\rho}$<.05). There were also positive correlation between the sexual attitude and active sexual behaviour(r=.20, ${\rho}$<.01), the subcategory of sexual behaviour. These results of study suggest that psychiatric nurses should appropriately assess sexual problems of psychiatric patients and include them in nursing interventions.
