  • This study investigates convergent influence on depression and its association with positive emotion, negative emotion and job seeking stress among some college women of health affiliated educations. The survey was administered to 419 college women in Honam area from March 9th to April 30th, 2015. The structured self-administered questionaries were used. The depression was negatively correlated with positive emotion and it was positively correlated with negative emotion and job seeking stress. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis show the following. The depression of respondents turned out to be significantly higher in following groups: a group in which self esteem is lower, a group in which subjective happiness is lower, a group in which hopelessness is higher, a group in which type A behavior pattern is higher, a group in which personality stress is higher. Their explanatory power was 47.1%. With the analysis of covariance structure, we could confirm relationship among the four factors such as positive emotion, negative emotion, job seeking stress and depression. In conclusion, the results of the study indicate that the efforts, to increase positive emotion, and to decrease negative emotion and job seeking stress, are required to reduce the depression level of the college women of health affiliated educations.

  • Current research explores the effect of language on the perception of facial emotion as suggested by the psychological construction theory of emotion by using a psychophysical method. In this study, we hypothesize that the perception of facial expression may be influenced if the observer is shown an affective word before he/she judges an expression. Moreover, we suggest that his/her understanding of a facial emotion will be in line with the conceptual context that the word denotes. During the two experiments conducted for this project, a control stimulus or words representing either angry or happy emotions were briefly presented to participants before they were shown a target face. These target faces were randomly selected from seven faces that were gradually morphed to show neutral to angry (in Experiment 1) and neutral to happy (in Experiment 2) expressions. The participants were asked to perform a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) task to judge the emotion of the target face (i.e., decide whether it is angry or neutral, or happy or neutral). The results of Experiment 1 (when compared with the control condition) showed that words denoting anger decreased the point of subjective equality (PSE) for judging the emotion of the target as anger, whereas words denoting happiness increased the PSE. Experiment 2, in which participants had to judge expressions on a scale from happy to neutral, produced a contrasting pattern of results. The outcomes of this study support the claim of the psychological construction theory of emotion that the perception of facial emotion is an active construction process that may be influenced by information (such as affective words) that provide conceptual context.

  • The traditional Korean society has been classified as an Eastern collectivist culture, but in the flow of globalization and digitalization along with the post-Cold War era of the 1970s, Western individualistic culture and values quickly permeated the Korean younger generation. Since rapid changes occurred within a short period of time, there may be differences in cultural self-construal between generations living in the same era. Due to this, psychological problems related to emotional expression and suppression may appear differently depending on generations. Therefore, in the current study, 1,000 Korean adult men and women from their 20s to 60s were investigated for their level of independent and interdependent self-construal, alexithymia, ambivalence over emotional expression(AEE) and emotional suppression(ES). Then the relationship between the variables(self-construal and alexithymia,) and the mediating process of AEE and ES were examined. The generation of participants were divided into the industrialization cohort (birth year < 1970) and the digitalization cohort (birth year starting from 1970). Using the PROCESS macro(Hayes, 2022), we tested a serial mediation model of AEE and ES between the relative independent self-construal(RIS) and alexithymia. The results indicate that the level of alexithymia increases by the serial increase of AEE and ES when RIS decreases. Next, we examined a moderation effect of generatione on the mediation process of AEE and ES, and found that generation moderates the relationship between ES and alexithymia. That is, the effect of ES on alexithymia is significant for the digitalization cohort, while it is not significant for the industrialization cohort. The current results imply that emotion regulation strategies of Koreans have been differently developed according to prevailing cultural values in each generation, and that the negative influence of emotion suppression could be different according to the cultural background of each generation.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-compassion and binge eating and to examine the mediating effects of negative affect and negative urgency. To validify this hypothesis, 441 college and graduate students were measured self-compassion, negative affect, negative urgency, and binge eating. For the collected data, SPSS(23.0) and AMOS(23.0) were used for descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and analyzing the structural equation model. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the correlation analysis showed significant correlations among self-compassion, negative affect, negative urgency, and binge eating. Second, in the relationship between self-compassion and binge eating, negative affect and negative urgency showed serial mediating effects. This means that for college and graduate students, the promotion of self-compassion can reduce binge eating behavior by sequentially reducing negative emotions and negative urgency. Finally based on these results, practical applications of self-compassion in the treatment of binge eating behavior were proposed.

  • The dimensions of affection structure from hand movements was developed for the purpose of understanding relationship between affective words and physical factors to apply it to computing environment. To analyze hand movements, three dimensions -direction, time, weight- were found through reconstructing sub-properties of Laban Movement Analysis. The direction dimension has five freedoms of movement (horizontal, vertical, sagittal, circular, shaking) while the time and weight dimensions both have two sub categories each, (sudden, sustained), (light, strong) respectively. By factorial design using the three dimensions, twenty movement were videotaped. Participants rated a list of fifty korean affective words on each twenty movements. The results were studied by nonlinear principal component analysis. The results suggested that time and weight dimensions are closely related with arousal level dimension of affection. Strong and sudden movements associated with highly aroused affection, while light and sustained movements associated with the opposite affection. The direction sub-dimensions were found to be associated with the kinds of affection. Linear movements like horizontal, vortical and sagittal direction were correlated to highly aroused negative affection. Circular movements were found to correlate closely by fun and delight on the graph, while shaking movements were correlated to anxiety and impatience. These results imply that the dimensions of affection structure and sub-properties of hand movements are closely connected with each other.

  • This study investigated the effect of student-perceived teacher's calling on student's well-being and the mediating effects of student-perceived emotional support and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. We analyzed data from 494 high school students in South Korea by using structural equation modeling. The results showed that student-perceived emotional support from the teachers mediated the relationship between student-perceived teacher's calling and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Also, adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies mediated the relationship between student-perceived emotional support and student's well-being. Furthermore, student-perceived emotional support and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies sequentially mediated the indirect positive relationship between student-perceived teacher's calling and student's well-being. Based on these results, implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.
