  • The purpose of this study was to investigate listener's affective responses to different vocal registers and modes in terms of valence (i.e., negative to positive affect) and arousal (i.e., low to high energy level). The data were collected from four different conditions (i.e., higher and lower registers paired with major and minor modes). A total of 188 female college students participated in the survey online and rated their perceived valence and arousal levels on a visual analogue scale after listening to each excerpt. The two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was administered for data analysis. The results revealed that there were significant differences in the affective responses to the two vocal registers, showing that the arousal was more affected by the register than the valence. Secondly, mode had statistically significant impact on both valence and arousal while weighing more on valence. Further, there was significant interaction effect of vocal register and mode on valence, but not on arousal. Results also displayed that listeners had the most negative valence when listening to the excerpt of minor mode in higher register, while having the lowest arousal when listening to the excerpt of minor mode in lower register. These findings imply that it is important to consider the vocal range as well as the musical mode when selecting music for appreciation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of emotional life across the life span and to examine the affective optimization theory emphasized positive aspect of aging. Three age groups(young group N=238. middle group N=495, old group N=283) were participated in this study. As a result, there were no age differences between the old and the middle group in the frequency of positive emotion experiences, but the old group experience more negative emotions than the middle group. However, generally they experienced positive emotions more often than negative emotions. Also, there were age differences in choosing social goals. The older group took the goals that related to emotional regulation and personal relationship more important than the goals related to learn something new or approve their ability. Interestingly, there were no age differences among three age groups in subjective well-being even though there existed differences in experiences of frequency of positive and negative emotions. Finally, the importance of role of the affective optimization in subjective well-being and adaptation in later life was discussed.

  • Recent studies on emotion as memory, and effects of emotion on memory were reviewied. The main issues discussed were : memory of emotional events, relation between implicit memory and emotion, and the effect of emotion on autobigraphical memory. The theoretical possibility and implications that emotion is not stored as some lower level node information in semantic network but as some higher level and inclusive information were descussed.

  • Decades of psychological research have shown that emotion brings users various kinds of physical and psychological advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, this also impacts human decision-making. However, in spite of the weight of emotion, combined with HCI, relevant research is still insufficient. We hypothesized that the user's temporal emotion could influence the product evaluation, especially in terms of product usability. Two studies were carried out to investigate the effect of induced priming on user evaluations. In exp1, we manipulated participants' temporal emotions using positive and negative images from IAPS. In our results, we saw image priming had a statistically significant effect, with the positive condition group giving the product high ratings for usability. In exp2, emotional image manipulation was conducted with valence and arousal. As a result, we found that the variables of valence and arousal had some interaction effects. These studies have demonstrated that temporally induced emotion could affect users' emotion in different ways, in addition to influencing product evaluations.

  • Positive affect has beneficial consequences in various life domains including social relational aspect. This study proposes that 'joy,' a highly arousing positive social emotion, promotes emotionally supportive reactions during a social interaction. In Study 1, after controlling for confounding personality characteristics (e.g., extraversion, agreeableness, adult attachment) and cognitive variables (e.g., empathy, self-esteem), positive affect predicted the amount of emotional support and enthusiasm one showed to a person who was describing a positive experience. The arousal dimension of positive emotion appeared to be the key in creating this outcome. Study 2 found that people were most likely to react in supportive ways (e.g., more laughing, emotion sharing, and active-constructive responses) to other's conversation after viewing a joy-inducing (rather than pride, awe, calm) film clip. These results partly explain why happy people are socially popular and suggest that one of the central functions of "joy" is to promote social bonding with others.

  • The purpose of the research was to verify the mediating effect of social support and cognitive emotional regulation strategy when office worker's emotional expressive ambivalence influences on interpersonal stress. A survey was conducted with 422 office workers from August to September of 2018. SPSS, AMOS and Mplus were used for descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, verification of structural equation modeling and mediated effect. There was a partial mediating effect in emotional expressive ambivalence of self-defense model, a complete mediating effect in relational emotional expressive ambivalence model. In both self-defense and relational emotional expressive ambivalence model, double mediation effect of passing through support and cognitive emotional regulation strategy in the relationship between emotional expressive ambivalence and interpersonal stress was significant. This study sought ways to reduce interpersonal stress by increasing the level of perception of social support and using adaptive cognitive emotional control strategies for office workers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of young children's playfulness, emotional control, and emotional instability on their peer play behavior, focusing on age differences. A total of 209 4- and 5-year-old children attending a child care center in South Korea participated in this study. The instruments used in this study were the Playfulness Scale, Emotion Regulation Checklist, and Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale. The collected data were analyzed using a Student's t-test, Pearson's partial correlation, and stepwise regressions with the SPSS software ver. 16.0. The main results of this study are as follows: First, there was a significant age difference in young children's emotional control, emotional instability, playfulness and peer play behavior. Second, the factors of emotional control and playfulness significantly predicted young children's play interaction irrespective of age. Third, the factors of emotional instability and playfulness significantly predicted young children's play disruption and play disconnection. Further, implications for the use of early intervention targeting specific emotional control and emotional instability problems have been discussed.
