  • Recently in HCI research, emotion recognition is one of the core processes to implement emotional intelligence. There are many studies using bio signals in order to recognize human emotions, but it has been done merely for the basic emotions and very few exists for the other emotions. The purpose of present study is to confirm the difference of autonomic nervous system (ANS) response in three emotions (boredom, pain, and surprise). There were totally 217 of participants (male 96, female 121), we presented audio-visual stimulus to induce boredom and surprise, and pressure by using the sphygmomanometer for pain. During presented emotional stimuli, we measured electrodermal activity (EDA), skin temperature (SKT), electrocardiac activity (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG), besides; we required them to classify their present emotion and its intensity according to the emotion assessment scale. As the results of emotional stimulus evaluation, emotional stimulus which we used was shown to mean 92.5% of relevance and 5.43 of efficiency; this inferred that each emotional stimulus caused its own emotion quite effectively. When we analyzed the results of the ANS response which had been measured, we ascertained the significant difference between the baseline and emotional state on skin conductance response, SKT, heart rate, low frequency and blood volume pulse amplitude. In addition, the ANS response caused by each emotion had significant differences among the emotions. These results can probably be able to use to extend the emotion theory and develop the algorithm in recognition of three kinds of emotions (boredom, surprise, and pain) by response measurement indicators and be used to make applications for differentiating various human emotions in computer system.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract core situations that can arouse various academic emotions and to analyze the characteristics of intensity-frequency of these academic emotions from Korean elementary students in Science classes. To accomplish this study, authors conducted a survey of 642 sixth grade students. The result of the study are as follows: First, science academic emotions varied depending on each of the science learning situations. On the whole, positive-emotions were aroused in science experiment situations and negative-emotions were aroused in evaluation, personality of individuals and other people, teaching-learning method and science experiment situations. If teachers want to manage a specific emotion, they should control the core situations that can arouse that specific emotion. Second, positive-emotions appeared more than negative-emotions in intensity and frequency. But boredom, annoyance and stuffiness appeared the most among negative-emotions. Teachers have to reduce students' boredom, annoyance and stuffiness that are aroused in their science classes. Based on the results, authors become assured that introduction of the emotions was a very useful method in enhancing Korean elementary students' affective domain achievement in science classes.

  • Previous studies using facial expressions have revealed valence and arousal as two core dimensions of affective space. However, it remains unknown if the two dimensional structure is consistent across ages. This study investigated affective dimensions using six facial expressions (angry, disgusted, fearful, happy, neutral, and sad) at three ages (young, middle-aged, and old). Several studies previously required participants to directly rate subjective similarity between facial expression pairs. In this study, we collected indirect measures by asking participants to decide if a pair of two stimuli conveyed the same emotions. Multidimensional scaling showed that "angry-disgusted" and "sad-disgusted" pairs are similar at all three ages. In addition, "angry-sad," "angry-neutral," "neutral-sad," and "disgusted-fearful" pairs were similar at old age. When two faces in a pair reflect the same emotion, "sad" was the most inaccurate in old age, suggesting that the ability to recognize "sad" decreases with old age. This study suggested that the general two-core dimension structure is robust across all age groups with the exception of specific emotions.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of raising plants at home on elementary school students' emotional intelligence. The experimental group in the post-test showed significant differences in all the domains of emotional perception, emotional expression, emotional empathy, emotional control, emotional application, compared to the control group, which indicated that the activity of raising plants at home has positive effects on the emotional intelligence of high graders in elementary school. Even in the change of students' emotional intelligence according to their gender, male students in the experimental group had higher average values more than the control group, showing significant differences in all the domains of emotional perception, emotional expression, emotional empathy, emotional control, emotional application. Female students in the experimental group had the same tendency. Accordingly, as a result of this study, it was found that the activity of raising plants at home has positive effects on the improvement of elementary school high graders' emotional intelligence.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine music-color association response(MCAR) of people with visual impairment through music-emotion scale and music-color scale. The study was conducted on 60 participants(30 congenital/ 30 adventitious) who are using services of two welfare centers at S and B cities. For this, four basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, and fear) mediated by music were selected, and MCAR to emotion-inducing music were analyzed through self-report method. As a result, first, there were found contrasts in MCAR between happiness and sadness according to type of emotion, however, similar in anger and fear. Second, in MCAR among three variables of the music-emotion scale(valence, arousal and intensity), valence was congruent with MCAR according to type of emotion, arousal marked high scores in negative emotions, and scores of intensity in happiness and sadness were higher than those in anger and fear. Third, there were no significant differences between two groups of people with congenital and adventitious visual impairments. It is meaningful that this study showed the MCAR can be mediated by music through investigating those of people with visual impairment.

  • This paper was intended to examine the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of statements in the context of eyewitness testimony. The main emotion theories and concepts introduced in previous studies examining the relation between testimony accuracy and negative emotions were examined based on the characteristics of the research method. The results were presented in the order of emotion definition, emotion inducing method, and emotion measurement method. Specifically, the definition of emotion was described based on studies on negative emotions, arousal, stress, and mood. The emotion inducing method was mainly described based on images, virtual reality, and staged events designed by researchers, which have been mainly used in laboratories. Emotion measurement methods were described with respect to the self-report, behavioral checklist, and psychophysiology. In addition, the emotional approach for objective and scientific repeated verification, the importance of effective experimental design and appropriate scientific memory test, and the need for individual difference control were discussed. This paper reinterprets the contradictions shown by previous research by systematically structuring the function of emotion that affects the accuracy of testimony. It was meaningful to provide a frame for comparative analysis of related studies. Ultimately, it is expected that such knowledge will be used as basic documents for judging the reliability of eyewitness testimony in a legal context.

  • Current lists of the Korean emotion words either do not consider word frequency, or only include emotion expression words such as 'joy' while disregarding emotion inducing words like 'heaven'. Also, none of the current lists contains the concreteness level of the emotional words. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop a new Korean affect word list that makes up such limitations of the current lists. To do so, in experiment 1, valence, arousal and concreteness ratings of the 450 Korean emotion expression nouns and emotion inducing nouns were surveyed with 399 participants. In addition, in experiment 2, an emotional stroop task was performed with the newly developed word list to test the usefulness of the list. The results showed clear patterns of the congruency effects between emotional words and emotion expressing faces. Increased response times and more errors were found when the emotion of the words and faces are non-matched, than when they were matched. The result suggested that the newly developed Korean affect word list can be effectively adapted to studies examining the influence of various aspects emotion.

  • The affective primacy hypothesis of Murphy와 Zajonc(1983) was replicated in this study. The results of experiment 1 and 2 expanded the affective priming effect by facial valence as well as affective events on object rating. Experiment 3 explored the affective priming effect of schizophrenics at the supraliminal level and their results compared with those of normal subjects. For normal subjects the effect of affective priming was found only at the subliminal level but schizophrenics showed the assimilation effects by affective priming even at the supraliminal level. Finally. principles of affective processing were discussed.
