Patterns of Natural Convection around a Square Cylinder Placed Concentrically in a Horizontal Circular Cylinder (수평원관 내부에 위치한 동축정방형 물체 주위에서의 자연대류특성)

  • 내부에 정방형, 외부에 원형인 두 정온동심수평관으로 이루어진 폐쇄공간에서 열부력으로 야기된 대류열전달 현상을 연구하였다. 주어진 비정규적 형상에서의 층류 정상 Boussinesq 유동을 해 석하기 위하여, 지구중력방향에 대하여 가능한 두 개의 대칭형 위치에 관하여, Galerkin 유한요 소법을 사용하였다. 이론의 결과를 확증하기 위하여 실험적으로도 온도측정과 유선의 가시화를 수행하였다. 정방형내관의 직각인 선단은 국소 및 총체열전달에 있어서 소극적인 역할을 하지만, 이들로 인한 경계층 유동의 박리는 발생하지 아니함을 보였다. 이 내관의 상부 수평면상에서는 유동속도와 온도구배가 낮기는 하나 확연한 대칭형의 열상승류(Plume)가 가능하였다. 내관의 벽면들이 지구중력방향에 관하여 .+-.45.deg.의 각을 이룰 경우 과류의 중심부가, Rayleigh수가 6.5*$10^{4}$보다 작을 때는 4개, 이보다 클때는 2개가 폐쇄공간 안에서 발생하였다.

Experimental Study on the Unsteady Flow under Various Operating Conditions of a Counter Rotating Axial Flow Fan (엇회전식 축류팬의 작동조건 변화에 따른 비정상 유동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experiments were done for the unsteady flow in a counter rotating axial flow fan near peak efficiency and stall point. Flow fields in a counter rotating axial flow fan were measured at cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor. Cross sectional passage flow patterns were investigated through the acquired data by the $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. Comparison of flow characteristics between two different operating conditions such as tip vortex, secondary flow and turbulence intensity were performed through the analyses of axial, radial and tangential velocity distributions. As a result, tip vortex and secondary flows are enforced and measured obviously at stall point.

  • The configuration effects of a tumble adaptor which transforms tumble into swirl on the intake tumble characterization under steady flow condition have been investigated by LDV measurement The following parameters were involved to test their effects on tumble-swirl conversion characteristics ; the cylinder height and its bottom shape, measuring position in the swirl induction pipe, and the relative direction of the induction pipe. The short cylinder height and the flat bottom of the tumble adaptor were found effective for the generation of tumble in the cylinder, allowing higher tumble-swirl conversion efficiency.

Improvement in flow and noise performance of backward centrifugal fan by redesigning airfoil geometry (익형 형상 재설계를 통한 후향익 원심팬의 유동 및 소음성능 개선)

  • The goal of this study is to improve flow and noise performances of existing backward-curved blade centrifugal fan system used for circulating cold air in a refrigerator freezer by optimally designing airfoil shape. The unique characteristics of the system is to drive cold airflow with two volute tongues in combination with duct system in a back side of a refrigerator without scroll housing generally used in a typical centrifugal fan system. First, flow and noise performances of existing fan system were evaluated experimentally. A P-Q curve was obtained using a fan performance tester in the flow experiment, and noise spectrum was measured in an anechoic chamber in the noise experiment. Then, flow characteristics were numerically analyzed by solving the three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and noise analysis was performed by solving the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkins equation with input from the flow simulation results. The validity of numerical results was confirmed by comparing them with the measured ones. Based on the verified numerical method, blade inlet and outlet angles were optimized for maximum flow rate using the two-factor central composite design of the response surface method. Finally, the flow and noise performances of a prototype manufactured with the optimum design were experimentally evaluated, which showed the improvement in flow and noise performance.

Simulation of Unsteady Rotor-Fuselage Aerodynamic Interaction Using Unstructured Adaptive Meshes (비정렬 적응 격자계를 이용한 비정상 로터-동체 공력 상호작용 모사)

  • A three-dimensional parallel Euler flow solver has been developed for the simulation of unsteady rotor-fuselage interaction aerodynamics on unstructured meshes. In order to handle the relative motion between the rotor and the fuselage, the flow field was divided into two zones, a moving zone rotating with the blades and a stationary zone containing the fuselage. A sliding mesh algorithm was developed for the convection of the flow variables across the cutting boundary between the two zones. A quasi-unsteady mesh adaptation technique was adopted to enhance the spatial accuracy of the solution and to better resolve the wake. A low Mach number pre-conditioning method was implemented to relieve the numerical difficulty associated with the low-speed forward flight. Validations were made by simulating the flows around the Georgia Tech configuration and the ROBIN fuselage. It was shown that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of complicated unsteady rotor-fuselage aerodynamic interaction phenomena.

Time-Domain Simulation of Nonlinear Free-Surface Flows around a Two-Dimensional Hydrofoil (2차원 수중익주위 비선형 자유표면유동의 시간영역 시뮬레이션)

  • A computationally efficient numerical method based on potential flow is developed for time-domain simulation of the nonlinear free-surface flows around a 2-dimensional hydrofoil. This numerical method, namely, spectral/boundary-element method, is a mixed one of the high-order spectral method and the boundary-element method in time-domain. The high-order spectral method is used to calculate the nonlinear evolution of free-surface, and the boundary-element method is used to calculate the effects of the hydrofoil and the shed vortex. As application examples, nonlinear free-surface flows around a 2-dimensional hydrofoil which starts from the rest and translates near the free-surface with or without harmonic oscillations are calculated. Nonlinear/unsteady results of free-surface waves and hydrodynamic farces are shown and discussed. Particularly, the results of steady-state which are obtained as a special case of the present unsteady solution are compared with others' calculated and experimental results, and good agreements are observed.

Foams for Aquifer Remediation: Two Flow Regimes and Its Implication to Diversion Process

  • Foam reduces the mobility of gas phase in porous media to overcome gravity override and to divert acid into desired layers in the petroleum industry and to enhance the efficiency of environmental remediation. Recent experimental studies on foam show that foam exhibits a remarkably different flow rheology depending on the flow regime. This study, for the first time, focuses on the issues of foam diversion process under the conditions relevant to groundwater remediation, combining results from laboratory linear-flow experiments and a simple numerical model with permeability contrasts. Linear flow tests performed at two different permeabilities (k = 9.1 and 30.4 darcy) confirmed that two flow regimes of steady-state strong foams were also observed within the permeability range of shallow geological formations. Foam exhibited a shear-thinning behavior in a low-quality regime and near Newtonian rheology in a high-quality regime. Data taken from linear flow tests were incorporated into a simple numerical model to evaluate the efficiency of foam diversion process in the presence of permeability contrasts. The simple model illustrated that foam in the high-quality regime exhibited a successful diversion but foam in the low-quality regime resulted in anti-diversion, implying that only foam in the high-quality regime would be applicable to the diversion process. Sensitivity study proved that the success of diversion process using foam in the high-quality regime was primarily controlled by the limiting capillary pressures (${P_c}{^*}$) of the two layers of interest. Limitations and implications are also discussed and included.

Characteristics of Cold Water Appeared in the Southwestern East Sea (동해 남서부해역에 출현하는 냉수 특성)

  • 하계 동해의 남서부해역에 냉수가 왜 그리고 어떠한 해양환경하에 출현하는가를 밝히기 위하여 현장조사, 위성자료의 분석 및 수치실험을 실시하였다. 이 해역에서 냉수는 비정상년의 경우는 정상년에 비해 보다 더 연안 가까이에서 출현하였고, 수온도 낮았다. 이것은 냉수가 비정상년에는 정상년에 비해 크게 발달하여 연안역으로 확장함을 의미하였다. 흐름장의 계산결과는 지형류적인 관점에서 수온의 관측결과를 잘 재현하였다. 한편, 정상년의 경우는, 북한한류(NKCW)가 쓰시마난류(TC)와 균형을 유지하면서 동해의 북서쪽에 머물고 있었다. 이에 반해, 비정상년의 경우는, 북한한류가 점차 남쪽으로 남하하여 동해 서부역의 대부분이 북한한류의 세력하에 놓였다. 그래서, 하계 동해 서부 연안역에서의 냉수 출현은 남쪽으로의 북한한류의 확장에 의한 부산물인 것으로 판단되었다. 울산 연안역에 대한 유동계산결과는 하계 남풍이 불 경우, 표층과 저층 사이에 흐름의 역전현상이 나타났다. 따라서, 하계 동해의 남서부 연안역, 특히 수심의 변화가 급한 방어진 부근에서 냉수의 용승이 일어날 수 있음을 시사하였다.

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine is supersonic speed. So residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for efficient combustion. This study used open cavity on fuel/air mixing model and laser schlieren was carried out to investigate flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity. A source of illumination has 10 ns endurance time so it can observe unsteady flow characteristics efficiently. Pressure was measured by varying momentum flux ratio. And the change of critical ignition point was observed to change of momentum flux ratio.

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine has supersonic speed so that the residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for the efficient combustion. This study used open cavity(L/D=4.8) as a fuel/air mixing model. Laser schlieren visualization and pressure measurement were carried out to observe the flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity at the time of fuel injection. As a result of 10ns laser schlieren, unsteady flow which was around the cavity could be observed effectively. Pressure was measured that momentum flux ratio(J) was changed. And the change of critical ignition point could be observed by the momentum flux ratio changed.
