As people prefer to use right or left hand, some have preferred chewing side while others do not. Totally, 82 volunteers composed of students and staffs from Dental Hospital College of Dentistry Yonsei University participated in this study for the investigation of influence of preferred chewing habit, that has lasted for more than a year, on electromyographic(EMG) activity of masticatory muscles and bite force. Among the 82 volunteers, 46 had preferred chewing habit while the other 36 did not. Prior to the investigation, those with factors that could affect the study, such as, general disease, irregular dentition and malocclusion, were screened and excluded by questionnaire and clinical examination. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in EMG activities between chewing side and non-chewing side of preferred chewing subjects at rest as well as maximal voluntary contraction(MCV)(p>0.05). 2. Asymmetrical coefficient of temporal and masseter muscle EMG activities between preferred chewing subjects and non-preferred chewing subjects at rest was not significantly different(p>0.05). 3. Asymmetrical coefficient of masseter EMG activity was significantly higher(p<0.05) than that of non-preferred chewing subjects at MCV, whereas that of anterior temporal muscle showed no difference(p<0.05). 4. In preferred chewing subjects, there was no significant difference in average bite force and occlusal contact area between chewing side and non-chewing side(p>0.05). 5. There was no significant difference in Asymmetrical coefficients of average bite force and occlusal contact area between preferred chewing subjects and non-preferred chewing subjects (p>0.05). Consequently, preferred chewing habit can be considered as physiological asymmetry with normal function rather than to have influence on EMG muscle activity of masticatory muscles, average bite force and occlusal contact area. Objective standardization to differentiate preferred chewing subjects and non-preferred chewing subjects should be established in the further study.
Bolton analysis is widely used to predict tooth size discrepancy. but its accuracy has been challenged. The purpose of this study was to describe true anterior tooth size discrepancies among orthodontic patients and to evaluate the factors that affect true anterior tooth size discrepancies. The subjects consisted of 80 patients with varying malocclusions (Class I. Class II. Class III. and Class III surgery) who were treated orthodontically. Pre-treatment models. set-up models from post-treatment models. and lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed The results were as follows. The means. the standard deviations. and ranges of anterior Bolton ratio in the present study were somewhat higher than those of Bolton's samples and Korean normal samples. The number of patients showing maxillary deficiency was larger than that of patients showing maxillary excess in view of true anterior discrepancies. There was a significant difference between anterior Bolton discrepancy from pre-treatment models and true anterior discrepancy from set-up models (p < 0.05) There was no significant difference in true anterior discrepancies among malocclusion groups (p > 0.05). And there was also no significant difference between the male and female groups (p> 0.05). Overbite and the incisal edge thickness of maxillary anterior teeth have little relationship with true anterior discrepancies. Multiple regression analysis showed that true anterior discrepancy was mainly determined by anterior Bolton ratio, upper incisor to occlusal plane angle after treatment. interincisal angle after treatment. and upper right lateral incisor width.
Purpose: The first objective of this study was to compare the upper midface morpholgy, focusing on the soft tissues, between skeletal Class III maloccusion patients with midfacial depression and the norm. The second objective was to estimate and analyze the change in the upper midface soft tissues following surgical correction with maxillary advancement by Lefort I osteotomy and mandibular setback by bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSRO). Methods: The samples consisted of 34 adult patients (15 males and 12 females) with an average age of 21 years, who had severe anteroposterior discrepancy with midfacial depression. These patients had received presurgical orthodontic treatment and surgical treatment which consisted of simultaneous Lefort I osteotomy and BSSRO. Results: The correlation coefficient between changes in maxillary advancement and changes in Or' (soft tissue orbitale) was 0.599 (p < 0.05). Change in maxillary plane angle and vertical change of the maxilla were not correlated with the change in Or' (p < 0.05). The ratio of soft tissue change in Or' to maxillary advancement was 43.57 %, and 81.54 % in Sn. Regression equations between maxillary movement and Or' were devised. The $r^2$ value was 0.476. Conclusions: The majority of measurements in the upper midface in skeletal Class III maloccusions when compared to the norm, showed significant differences. In Class III malocclusion with midfacial depression, maxillary advancement produces soft tissue change in the upper midface.
This investigation was designed to analyze the degree of dental compensation according to horizontal components of craniofacial skeleton and to investigate correlation between dental compensation and craniofacial pattern in skeletal class III malocclusion. The material selected for this study consisted of standard lateral cephalogram of 59 subjects in normal occlusion group, 91 subjects in mild skeletal class III malocclusion group and 58 subjects in severe skeletal class III malocclusion group. The mild skeletal class III malocclusion group was divided into two groups, one was class III malocclusion without anterior crossbite group and the other was class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite group. The data were analyzed by Quick-ceph image program. The results were as follows. 1. Mild skeletal class III malocclusion without anterior crossbite group showed the most labial inclination of upper incisors, followed by severe skeletal class III malocclusion group and mild skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite group, the Latter showing the least. The amount of lingual inclination of lower incisors was the largest in severe skeletal class III malocclusion group, and there was no statistically significant difference between mild skeletal claw III malocclusion without anterior crossbite group and mild skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite group. 2. There were little differences in vertical skeletal structure between mild skeletal class III malocclusion without anterior crossbite group and mild skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior cwssbite group, they showed statistically significant differences in the upper incisors measurements. 3. The measurements of lower incisors in mild skeletal class III malocclusion without anterior crossbite group and upper incisors in mild skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite group represented a high correlation with skeletal structure. Especially, ∠IMPA and ∠FMIA of lower incisor measurements, and ∠U1-FH ∠U1-SN of upper incisor measurements showed high correlation with skeletal structure in each group. 4. ∠IMPA and ∠FMIA of lower incisor measurements showed high correlation with skeletal structure in all groups. ∠U1-FH, ∠U1-SN and U1-facial plane(mm) of upper incisor measurements represented higher correlation with skeletal structure than any other upper incisor measurements.
This study was concerned with comparing the measured values of labial alveolar bone through the lateral cephalometric radiography and mandibular incisor cross-sectional tomogram between two groups, one group of mandibular prognathism patients who needed an orthognathic surgery as an experimental group and the other group who had normal molar relationships as a control group. The purpose of the study was to find out the predisposing factor of bone resorption and gingival recession before orthodontic treatment. The results were as follows: 1. The cross-sectional area of labial alveolar bony plate in mandibular prognathism was significantly smaller than that of control group. 2. In mandibular prognathism, the distance between cementoenamel junction and alveolar crest was significantly greater than control group. 3. There were negative correlations between area of labial alveolar bony plate and distance from cementoenamel junction to alveolar crest, and positive correlations between area of labial alveolar bony plate and distance from alveolar crest to root apex. 4. In mandibular prognathism, there were positive correlations between IMPA and thickness of symphysis, and negative correlations between IMPA and the alveolar bony height. The results of the present study suggest the mandibular prognathism patients are prone to the gingival recession due to the small amount of labial alveolar bone around lower incisors.
The aim of this study was development of the Straight-Wire Appliance(SWA) suitable lot the treatment or Korean. To accomplish the object of this study, Korean adult with normal occlusion were selected with following criteria : 1) no functional abnormality in the craniofacial area, 2) good dental arch form and posterior occlusal relationship, 3) Angle Class I occlusal relationship, 4) no experience of orthodontic, nor prosthodontic treatment, especially, no dental treatment on labial and buccal surfaces of teeth, 5) good racial profile. Impression were taken for upper and lower dental arches or the selected normal occlusion samples and the orthodontic dental stone models were fabricated. 5 well-trained orthodontists had examined the acquired dental stone models to select study samples which satisfy the Six keys to optimal occlusion of Andrews. 155 pairs of dental stone models (92 pairs of Male, 63 of Female) were finally selected. 3 dimensional digitization were performed with the Coordinate Measuring Machine(CMM, MPC802, WEGU-Messtechnik, Germany) and measuring of Angulation, Inclination, In-and-Out, Molar offset angle and Arch form were accomplished with a measuring software to achieve data for the development of SWA. Before the measurement, error study was performed on the 3 dimensional digitization with CMM, and the analysis of reliability of computerized measuring method adapted in this study and conventional manual method Presented by Andrews was performed. Results of this study were as to)lows : 1. Equi-distance digitization with mesh size 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm were acceptable in 3 dimensional digitization of dental stone model with the CMM, and the digitization with 1.0 mm mesh size was recommendable in terms of efficiency. 2. Computerized measuring method with 3 dimensional digitization was more reliable than manual measuring method of Andrews. 3. Data were collected for the development of SWA suitable for the morphological characteristics of Korean with the computerized measuring method with 3 dimensional digitization.
The purpose of this study was to compare the arch width of the hyperdivergent group with that of the neutral group in Class III malocclusion based on the vertical patterns and to compare the arch width of Class III neutral group With that of normal occlusion group based on sagittal patterns. The subjects consisted of 118 pairs of studty casts, divided into three groups , 37 Class III hyperdivergent group(18 males and 19 females, SN-Mn plane angle>39.5$^{\circ}$), 40 Class III neutral group(20 males and 20 females, SN-Mn plane angle : 32 ${\pm}$ 2.5$^{\circ}$) and 41 Class I normal occlusion group(20 males and 21 females). The intercanine, interpremolar, and intermolar width of the maxillary and mandibular study casts were measured, then the ratios of dental width to basal width and mandibular width to maxillary width were obtained. Basal arch width and dental arch width were measured to obtain the pure basal arch relation in transverse plane as ruled out the transverse dental compensation. The results were as follows 1. There were no significant differences in any ratios between Class III hyperdivergent group and Class III neutral group as different vertical pattern. 2. As the ratios of dental arch width to basal arch width between normal occlusion group and Class III neutral group were compared, the maxillary teeth flared buccally to the basal bone, and the mandibular teeth tilted lingually to the basal bone in Class III neutral group. 3. The ratios of mandibular arch width to maxillary arch width in basal arch level were significantly different in all regions. Maxillary basal arch width of Class III neutral group was narrower than that of normal occlusion group. 4. The ratios of mandibular arch width to maxillary arch width in teeth level were not significantly different between normal occlusion group and Class III neutral group. In spite of discrepancies of maxillary and mandibular basal arch width, the dental arch width of Class III malocclusion group compensated very well. At the presurgical orthodontic treatment in clinic, it would not be desirable to decompensate for compensated dental arch width too much, for obtaining an appropriate arch compatibility and good results for orthognathic surgery.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to establish cephalometric norms of Mongolian adults, which have not previously been reported in orthodontic journals, and to compare them with cephalometric norms of Korean adults. Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 74 Mongolian adults (35 men, 39 women) and 95 Korean adults (52 men, 43 women) with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were obtained. The subjects were chosen by orthodontists of the same ethnic background. Forty craniofacial variables were measured, and groups were compared by analysis of covariance. Results: The cephalometric norms for male and female Mongolian and Korean adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were established. Sexual dimorphism was found in linear skeletal measurements and vertical skeletal relationships. Compared with Korean adults, Mongolian adults had shorter anterior facial height, more prominent chins, and more upright upper incisors. There were few differences in soft tissue measurements. The differences were statistically significant, but their clinical importance may be limited. Conclusions: Cephalometric differences can be considered, but little difference may exist in the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning of Mongolian and Korean adults.
The Purpose of this study was to investigate the dentoalveolar compensation according to anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy in normal occlusion and to evaluate cephalometric parameters that quantitatively describe dental compensations. The study consisted of 90 subjects (50 males. 40 females) who were selected among specimens of normal occlusion at Seoul National, University Dental Hospital, Dept. of Orthodontics. Lateral cephalograms in centric occlusion were traced and digitized for each subject. According to the anteroposterior skeletal pattern the sample was divided into three groups. Cephalometric data were analyzed for the three groups using the SPSS program. Independent t-test, correlation analysis and regression analysis were carried out. The results were as fellows: Dentoalveolar compensation was found in upper and lower incisor inclination and occlusal plane inclination. As the mandible located anterior to the maxilla, the maxillary incisors incisors more labially. the mandibular incisors more lingually, and the occlusal plane continued to flatten. The dental parameters most correlated with anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy were L1 to SN and L1 to FH. Among the compensatory dentoalveolar changes, lower incisor inclination was strongly related to the anteroposterior jaw relationship and played au imposrtant role in obtaining a normal incisor relationship U1 to PtGn and L1 to APog were constant irrelevant to anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy.

In Angle's Class III malocclusion, which has higher incidence in Korean than Western, depressed midfacial profile with protruded lower lips and mandible may give rise to many functional, esthetic, psychological, social problems. Due to the different malocclusion incidence according to racial differences, many previous studies focused on the relationship between Class II malocclusion and nasal airway obstruction. Previous studies used lateral cephalography which has limitations of 2 dimensional image with projection error and identification error. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze morphologic differences in the nasal airway between normal occlusion and Angle's Class III malocclusion patients using 3-dimensional facial computed tomography. Thirteen normal occlusion(7 men and 6 women) and sixteen skeletal Class III(7 men and 9 women) patients were selected and 3-dimensional facial computed tomography taking was performed. Comparison between two group in volume and sectional area of nasal airway were carried out. The results were followed. 1. In the comparison of absolute nasal airway volume, oropharyngeal space of experimental group were larger than control group but there are no significant difference in other. 2. In the comparison of relative nasal airway volume, oropharyngeal space of experimental group were larger than control group but there are no significant difference in other. 3. In the oropharyngeal space width on frontal and lateral view, the similar tendency was revealed between two groups. 4. In the lateral curvature of nasal airway, the similar tendency was revealed between two groups.
