  • The purpose of this study is to discuss the direction of studies of information seeking behavior(ISB) by analyzing previous studies provided model of ISB. Studies were divided into 3 types in terms of factors, processes, or types/patterns of ISB and sub-analyzed by 9 aspects such as research method/ theoretical framework, context of ISB and vice versa. Korean research strategies for overcoming the limitation of ISB studies are to do holistic research approach capturing complexity and multidimention of ISB as well as to extend research objects. Also, it needs to construct substantive theories based upon korean phenomenon of ISB.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of library service users' information seeking behavior based on the grounded theory methodology. After interviewing twelve undergraduate students, the researcher coded the data based on the grounded theory methodology. As a result of the entire coding processes, this study constructed the library service users' information seeking behavior model. According to the model, the following ten factors are important when explaining library service users' information seeking behavior: the information users' environment, other people, users' experiences, recognition of information sources, information provided, memory, a need-creating environment, information gathering, information use, and satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction.

Next, to measure information seeking activities, 200 of undergraduate students were recruited, and a questionnaire with 13 questions was designed. The questions included information usage motivation, how to collect and search scholarly information, challenges faced in the search process, level of satisfaction, and the use of SNS (Social Network Service). This research concluded that personality traits affected information seeking behavior and Enneagram types of each center of energy consistently did not show similar information seeking behavior.

  • The prior studies on the practical lawyer's information seeking behaviors, including Leckie et al. (1996) model showed that role of the work and nature of the work in attorney's practices had an significant influence on the attorney's information seeking behaviors. This study now asks if these prior analyses can be applicable to attorneys' practices nowadays. This study performed surveys and interviews with 21 practical attorneys in korea who were grouped by their experience period and the size of law firms. This study concludes that role of the work in Leckie et al. model still affects the attorneys' information seeking behaviors today and moreover, the attorney's experience and the size of law firms as variables also have made an impact on attorney's behaviors so far. By the way, this study further finds that the attorneys prefer the digital information in online database and formal information like statutes or case laws. These results are definitely different from them of the prior studies. In addition, this study suggests that the behavior such as meaningful using of the informal information in difficulties with improper information can be kinds of the attorney's information seeking behaviors.

  • Rapid change in information use environments that corresponds with the development of new technologies requires a new perspective in examining information source uses and information services. As understanding information seeking behaviors is an essential element for improving information services, the changing information seeking behaviors should be examined in a timely manner. While several prior studies focus on this topic, few studies deal with medical doctors' information seeking behaviors especially focusing on information seeking in both medical practices and research. Thus, this study aims to explore the information seeking behaviors of medical doctors who are both medical practitioners and researchers. Data were obtained by open-ended and semi-structured in-depth interviews during one month from April to May, 2009. The interview-question topics ranged from research contexts, medical-practice-related information seeking behaviors, favorable information sources, and information search process and satisfaction. Findings include that, for research purpose, digital journal articles accessed through the PubMed were more favorable sources while, for practice purpose, printed textbooks were preferred. Overall, the most-frequently-used sources were PubMed and articles because medical doctors regard the reliability and authority very highly.

  • The purpose of this study lies in analyzing the limitations and weakness of the existing PDL and proposing the principles for the development of a user-oriented PDL. The user group of PDL that we want to develop is university students. To this end, we investigate the information seeking behavior of the sampled user group, especially, their information needs, information use patterns, and information management patterns. Based on the results, we conceptually propose the systems specifications which the university students wish to be included in the PDL.
