The purpose of this paper is deriving philosophical foundations of information services by clarifying its concepts and attributes. Clarifying its concepts and attributes is based on the origin of the term information services, definitions and contents, historical and social perspectives. The theory of information services was reorganized by logically demonstrating that the term "information services" is most suitable name to represent its essence, attributes, and activities. The philosophy of information services has the key elements as instruction, information, guidance, and service in humanistic aspects which have been shown consistently in the origin of the term, definitions, historical and social perspectives. This paper tried to establish philosophical basis for information services that is focused on these elements.

This study investigates both arbitrariness and misrepresentation in the terminology of Korea's LIS field with an example of the term 'information services.' The focus is on analyzing the differences in the Term's history and theoretical base between American LIS field and Korea's. Discussed in details are the popularity and usage of the Term in Korea's LIS field and libraries. The ultimate intention of this study is to motivate the Korea's LIS scholars to endeavor for theoretical accomplishments with regard to 'information services,' which can justify the change of term from 'reference services' to 'information services.'

Reference services that use e-mail to receive reference questions and provide responses were developed as early digital reference services in the library field. However, librarians and users found that e-mail based reference services had some weak points when compared with traditional face-to-face reference services. As a result, libraries have started to create real-time reference services, which are similar to traditional face-to-face reference services through the use of synchronous chat software. Such chat reference services are focus of this paper. This paper approaches chat reference services as one of the services provided by libraries. Based on the understandings of the unique characteristics of services and the concept of "service quality", this paper tries to suggest appropriate marketing strategies of chat reference services.

The purpose of this study is to explore the ways to improve public library community information services in the Internet environment. It first examines the concepts and current contexts of community information flow, illustrates successful cases of public library community information services, and then, suggests public libraries provide gateways to the community information on the Internet. The needs for research to guide public library community information services and continuing education for public librarians are also presented.

This study presented the necessity of the development of a digital reference service systems as a method for direct information service in the library on the internet. The purpose of this research is to find commonalities for building a model of digital reference service. This study used qualitatives methods(elite interviews and document analysis) to extract accumulated knowhow from fourteen expert services sites which are similar with reference services in the library. For effective management of the digital reference service, it is necessary to have a digital reference service librarian who is well versed in the inner workings of the service and in the knowledge the service deals with.

This study investigated the current state of the reference services of the Korean university libraries and examined ways to improve the system. Especially this study introduced the concept of 'subjectized reference services'and tried to find a way to apply it to the present stage of the Korean university libraries. For that purpose, this study surveyed the reference librarians of the university libraries across the country. The results of this study can be used as the basic data for training 'subject specialist librarians', who can provide specialized services appropriate to the realities of the Korean university libraries.

In order to promote the volunteer activity management of public libraries, the need on the standard manual for volunteer activity of public libraries has become inevitably urgent. In this context, this study builds a theoretical background on the volunteer activity of public libraries, on its management and on its standard manual; examines the volunteer activity management of public libraries including its planning, personal management and administration; and classifies them into twelve domains and six work flows based on the literature review and case studies; and develops the standard manual for volunteer activity of public libraries. By so doing, this study aims at enhancing our understanding on the volunteer activity management of public libraries.

본 논문은 한국어 보조동사의 의미를 Sowa에 의해 제안되고 국제표준이 되고있는 개념그래프를 이용하여 형식적으로 기술하는 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위해 영어의 양상과 상에 관한 개념그래프를 알아보고 한국어 보조동사를 통사/의미론적으로 고찰한다. 한국어 보조동사의 개념그래프적 기술을 위해, 각종 논문과 국어사전에서 한국어 보조동사 40개의 여러 예문들을 수집하여 완료, 진행, 봉사, 시도, 강세, 원망, 지속, 추정의 8가지 의미로 분류하고 이들을 개념그래프로 기술한다. 실험에서는 이들 8가지 의미들을 인공지능언어의 일종인 LIPS과 유사한 KIF로 작성하고 C++를 이용하여 한국어 보조동사가 포함된 문장을 입력받아 개념그래프로 변환하는 프로그램을 구현한다. 문장 내의 모든 범주들의 개념과 개념 관계가 자연어의 모든 의미관계를 표시할 수 있는 개념그래프는 한국어 보조동사의 다양한 의미를 기술하는데 적합함을 알 수 있었다.

Korean auxiliary verbs are often used in Korean sentences in spite of the small number of the auxiliary verbs, However. the incorrect processing of the verbs concept leads to the poor translation quality. To solve the problems of the auxiliary verb processing. the paper proposes a description of the auxiliary verbs based on Conceptual Graph (CG), For the description of the auxiliary verbs within CG. we first collect 40 Korean auxiliary verbs and example sentences from papers and a Korean dictionary, Next, we perform the analysis of the Korean auxiliary verbs through a classification: perfective, progressive, benefactive, attemptive, emphatic, desirable, retentive, and presumptive. Then we depict the eight meanings based on CG. In the experiment. the paper implements the program that translates sentences included in the auxiliary verbs into CG and explains the experimental results.

This article intends to locate the logical basis to apply bibliotherapy as a library service in Korean libraries. To the end, investigated and discussed are the historical relationship between bibliotherapy and RAS(readers' advisory service), and the theoretical base and practical experiences that enabled bibliotherapy to be practical in the U.S. library community. This article introduces a concept of 'therapeutic' RAS as a similar concept to 'developmental' bibliotherapy, and suggests the roles of a librarian as a therapist, based on the "Zones of Intervention" by Carol Kuhlthau.
