A Study on the Visual Literacy for Picture Book Reviews (그림책 서평의 시각적 문식성에 관한 연구)

  • As a public institution, it is the duty and responsibility of a library to provide readers with information about books. To provide such information to readers, a librarian should have the ability to provide satisfactory consultation and advice. As interest in picture books grows, there is an increasing need for libraries and librarians to produce and release picture book reviews on a regular basis to inform readers of what makes a good picture book, and which among similar books should they choose. Other than summarizing the content of a picture book, a good picture book review should also provide additional information that will help readers understand the reviewed book such as the literary symbolism of a book's visual texts. To this end, a librarian is required to develop visual literacy, which would enable him/her to read into the deeper meaning of the images imbued with the writer's ideas and philosophy. In light of the above discussion, this study compares and analyzes two picture book versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood, with the purpose of helping librarians understand the visual texts that they need to refer to when writing picture book reviews.

  • 어린이 그림책의 효과적인 주제접근을 위해서는 주제명의 부여가 필수적이다. 그러나 어린이 그림책은 표제나 목차 등 자료 자체에서 주제명을 발췌하기가 어렵다. 또한 일반도서를 위한 주제명표를 그대로 사용하기도 적합하지 않다. 이에 본 연구에서는 어린이 그림책을 위한 별도의 주제명표를 개발하였다. 주제명표 개발을 위해서는 영미권의 그림책 주제명표를 참고하였으며, 이 과정에서 우리 문화와 언어에 맞도록 기존의 표목을 수정.추가하였다. 또한 그림책의 주요 독자층인 어린이에게 적합한 표목을 선정하기 위해 초등국어사전 등을 참고하였다. 그리고 시범적으로 구축된 주제명표를 어린이도서연구회의 추천그림책을 대상으로 적용하였다. 앞으로는 지속적인 주제명 부여 작업을 통해 주제명표를 정련하고, 그림책의 주제분석을 위한 지침을 추가적으로 제공할 필요가 있을 것이다.

Developing Subject Headings for Children's Picture Books based on A to Zoo (어린이 그림책을 위한 주제명표 개발 연구: 『A to Zoo』를 바탕으로)

  • Subject headings support the effective access of children's picture books. However, it is difficult to select subject terms from titles or table of contents in children's picture books because of their relatively little textual information. Therefore, it is necessary to assign subject terms to each picture book. However, it is not adequate to use general subject headings because the types and levels of general subject headings are different from special subject headings for the children's materials. For this reason, this study aims to develop subject headings for children's picture books. The subject terms in A to Zoo were selected, and the selected terms were translated into Korean and modified for the Korean culture and language. Other reference books, such as Elementary Korean Dictionary, were also used to determine adequate terms for children. The resulting subject headings were assigned to the recommended picture books for children and used to search by subject, browse, and recommend books.

Qualitative Research of Picture Books Preferred by 6 Year Old and 9 Year Old (만6세와 만9세 아동이 선호하는 그림책의 장르에 대한 질적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of children's favorite picture books by age according to genre. For this purpose, children of 6 and 9 year old were interviewed from October 2015 to January 2016, and the final data of 34 children were selected for analysis. The collected data were analyzed by inductive coding qualitatively. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, picture books preferred by 6 year old children appeared in the order of folktale picture books, story picture books, korean-domestic poetry picture books, informational picture books, and they didn't prefer korean-translated poetry picture books. They tended to like interesting story and well-constructed plots. Second, picture books preferred by 9 year old children were surveyed in the order of story picture books, folktale picture books, korean-domestic poetry picture books, and they didn't prefer informational picture books and korean-translated poetry picture books. They explored literary elements extensively and considered them as interesting factors. Based on these results, this study revealed reasons why children of different ages prefer particular picture book genre, and proposed ways to use picture book genres widely by age.

A Content Analysis of Picture Book Reviews in Korean Periodicals (국내 정기간행물에 나타난 그림책 서평의 내용분석)

  • In this study, the picture book reviews shown in Korean periodicals were analyzed to provide the developmental foundation for picture book reviews and expand the professional area of librarians as the producers of book review. Through the literature research and the Delphi Technique the desirable standard of book reviews was suggested, the contents in domestic book review mediums were analyzed for the rightness of describing based on the standard of the book review and henceforward the way of development was suggested. The result from analysis of book review showed that the outstanding book reviews should be more produced based on the desirable standard of book review and the evaluative statements should be developed more than the descriptive statements. Depending on the mediums the contents of the book review were different by the book reviewers' occupations, so the book reviewers should develop their professional knowledges in literature and art. Because the longer book review made the outstanding book review with the rightness of the desirable standard of book review, the certain quantity of book review should be needed and the role of librarians as the book reviewers should be further extended.

Analysis on Picture Books and Activity Contents of Book Start Program (북스타트 프로그램의 그림책과 활동내용 분석)

  • This study intended to analyze picture books and activity contents of Book Start Program targeting infants and preschooler. Target objects were 244 picture books with their activities contained on casebook of Book Start Program. First, the study outcome showed that the most type of its picture books in general was fantasy, while, by ages, play books for those in 6~18 months, information books for those in 19~35 months, and fantasy books for those in 36 months~before going to school were the most. Second, contents of the picture books showed the most order of nature exploration, social relationship, art experience, while by ages, contents on nature exploration were the most in all ages, while social relationship and art experience showed statistically significant difference by ages. Third, the outcome of activity contents utilizing the books showed drawing activities were the most, while activities other than drawing showed statistically significant difference by ages. This result shows that they chose a picture book suitable for the developmental characteristics of the infants and preschoolers, but that the contents of the picture book were not closely associated with the activities. The outcome of this study lies in offering information and basis on ways to choose effective picture books and their activities to those planning and running Book Start Program in the future.

Components for Picturebook Peritext Analysis (그림책 페리텍스트 분석을 위한 구성 요소)

  • Academic interest in the educational value of picturebooks for children and the narrative importance of peritexts have been increased. This study was conducted with the purpose of presenting the components for analyzing the picturebook peritext. To this end, the components of the peritext used in 11 previous studies that analyzed the peritext of picturebooks were comprehensively reviewed. Looking at the results of the study, the components used in previous studies were largely categorized into four categories, and according to the characteristics of the components within each category, they were classified into 'basic information', 'physical elements', 'positional elements', and 'content elements.' The first category, 'basic information,' includes the title, authors' name, publication information, award information, and dedication/acknowledgment, laudatory comment. The second category, 'physical elements,' includes the format, book binding, and quality of material. The third category, 'positional elements,' includes cover(front cover, back cover, spine), endpaper, title page, copyright page, dust jacket and belly band. The fourth category, 'content elements,' includes text, illustration, typography, layout and page shape. Through the results of this study, it is expected that research on the analysis and utilization of various picturebooks will be activated.

Design for multimedia curriculum by using picture books for students in department of early childhood education (예비유아교사를 위한 그림책을 이용한 멀티미디어 수업 설계)

  • 본 논문에서는 예비유아교사를 위한 그림책을 이용한 멀티미디어 수업에 관한 설계를 하고자 한다. 최근 4차산업혁명시대를 맞아 대학에서 융복합관련 수업 및 교과목에 관한 요구는 많이 있으나 실제로 운영에는 많은 어려움이 있다. 특히 유아교육분야는 멀티미디어 및 최신 IT 기술이 많이 접목되어 유아들의 활동에 많이 활용되고 있으나 기술적인 부분을 포함하여 내용적으로도 융복합이 된 수업 설계가 매우 시급하다. 따라서 본 연구는 유아교육분야에서 그림책이라는 매개체를 활용하여 멀티미디어 기술을 사용함과 동시에 주제별학습이 되도록 한다. 이는 유아교육과 IT기술의 융복합된 수업설계로써 유아교육분야에서 다양하게 공유 및 확산 될 수 있다.

A Study on Visual Literacy for Picture Books: Implications for Librarians Providing Reader's Advisory Services (그림책의 시각적 문식성에 관한 연구 - 사서의 독서지원서비스를 위한 -)

  • Picture books, as a genre, are characterized by conveyance of ideas through linguistic texts, visual texts, and the complementary interactions between them. The writer of a picture book develops and delivers his or her ideas with textual contents written in a unique style, while the artist conveys the writer's ideas through pictures where things, objects, and figures are imbued with various emotions. Understanding a picture in a picture book requires an understanding of both the structure shown on the surface and the underlying structure that adapts and visualizes the philosophy and ideas of the writer. In light of the discussion above, this study proposes a method to help librarians improve their understanding of visual literacy for picture books, as visual literacy is required for the provision of readers' advisory services regarding picture books. This method, which is based on behavioral psychologist Rudolf Arnheim's theory of visual thinking, is expected to help librarians write picture book reviews or other secondary materials.

A Study on the Works and Artist Spirit of the Picture Book Writer Hong Seongchan (그림책작가 홍성찬의 작품 활동과 작가정신 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to look into the meaning of Hong Seongchan who has become the first generation picture book writers in the history of Korean picture books by considering the works of the picture book author 'Hong Seongchan', the characteristics of pictures and the artist's spirit. The career that he took up from 1955 as an illustrator to 2012 when the final picture book was published is in line with the developmental process of Korean picture books. He consistently devoted himself to publishing illustrations from the days when his job as an illustrator was not noticed to the days when he finished his life as a picture book writer through his full-length period. As a result, he built a unique world of works, such as the reproduction of Korean images and emotions through complete historical research. His strong illustration spirit and craftsmanship during his lifetime became the basis of the birth of a professional group called a full-time picture book writer, and Hong Seongchan became the first generation picture book writers in the history of Korean picture books.
