Changes of Performance of Soil-Cement Barrier due to Migration of Acids (산 이동에 따른 심층혼합기둥체 차수벽의 성능변화)

  • Soil-cement column is often used as a contaminant barrier. This study presents the results of experimental study performed to investigate the changes of properties of soil-cement column under the attack of acids. Sulfuric nitric, and ascetic acid were used as contaminants. Specimen were made of clayey and sandy soils with addition of cement and water Permeability of soil-cement decreased with time during permeability test. When significant amount of acid percolated the specimen, permeability increased and compressive strength decreased due to the dissolution and leaching of cement and its chemical reaction compounds. Sulfuric and nitric acid were more effective than ascetic acid in deteriorating soil-cement column. Amount of acid required to lower the pH of soil cement below 12 was calculated from the results of permeability tests. This leads to a conclusion that, under the conditions employed in this study, the chemical stability of soil-cement column could be maintained against acid attack for longer than generally accepted lifetime of contaminant barriers.

Containing Heavy Metal Contaminants Using Soil-Cement Column Barrier (심층혼합기둥체 차수벽을 이용한 중금속 오염물질의 이동 제어)

  • Laboratory experiments were peformed to understand physical properties of soil-cement column under the influence of acidic flow including metal contaminants and its retaining capacity against metal migration. The contaminant used in this study was nitric acid with Cu and Cd. The Permeability of soil-cement column decreased when pH of the column began to drop below 12. Decreases in pH led to significant reduction of compressive strength of clayey soil-cement specimen, while relatively marginal reduction for sandy soil-cement specimen. The metal contaminants did not leachate from soil-cement column until pH of soil-cement dropped below 7∼8 for Cu and 9∼10 for Cd. Metal contaminants were precipitated and trapped inside the soil-cement column at pHs higher than those mentioned as verified with metal analysis and visual inspection. This indicated that soil-cement column not only performs well as a cut-off wall, but also helps alleviating the level of contamination of the surrounding environment.

  • In this study, the pressuremeter test (PMT) and the standard penetration test (SPT) were performed on the lateral pile loading tests site to evaluate the coefficient of subgrade reaction, which is used for load-deformation behavior analysis of laterally loaded piles by elastic subgrade reaction method. As a result, widely used empirical formulas of the coefficient of subgrade reaction by N values of SPT is evaluated conservatively lateral behavior of piles. While the method of directly used PMT results and evaluation method of the coefficient of subgrade reaction considering deformation moduli of soil and a pile diameter that is able to estimate very similar to actual load-deformation behavior of laterally loaded piles in deformation range of 0.5%-1.0% of a pile diameter.

Design Forces Acting on Geosynthetics in Landfills (매립장 사면에 설치된 토목섬유의 설계 인장강도 산정)

  • This paper presents measured deformation of geomembrane installed on slopes of a landfill. The layout of geosynthetics installed on landfill slopes as required by regulations is composed of, in typical, geocomposite, geomembrane, geosynthetic clay liner in turn from the slope. An effort was made to better understand the sources of external forces acting on geosynthetics and their interactions. The results of a field observation indicated that tensile stresses induced on geomebrane were far less in magnitude than predicted by the design method employing mass equilibrium of waste. This was mainly because external forces acting on slopes were not transferred from geocomposite to underlying geomembrane. A simple, but rather rational method for assessing the stability of geosynthetics against tensile stresses was proposed. This method is based on a hypothesis that external forces acting on geosynthetics are the results of downdrag of waste during waste compaction.

  • The direct drive motor used in a precision motion rotate at about 1/10 speed and high torque comparing with general rotary motor. Excessive heating of the coils cause an exacerbating the heat problems and reducing the performance of motor. Because the rotation speed of the rotor and surrounding air is low, the motor can not be inefficiently cooled, the thermal analysis in the motor is very important. As the variations of rotation speed and torque, the temperature of several parts is measured and the features of the heat transfer is analyzed and improved.

장기(長期)옵션에 내재(內在)된 주가변동성(株價變動性)의 위험(危險)프레미엄에 관한 연구(硏究)

  • Black과 Scholes가 옵션가격모형(價格模型)을 개발한 후 그 모형에서의 가정들을 완화시킴으로써 옵션모형들이 발전되어 왔다. Black-Scholes의 옵션가격모형(價格模型)의 문제점중의 하나는 주가의 분산이 만기일까지 일정(一定)하다는 가정이다. 본 연구에서는 장기옵션이 Scorer 이용하여 주가분산(株價分散)의 중요성을 고찰하였다. 즉 Cox, Ingersoll과 Ross의 일반균형이론(一般均衡理論)에 근거한 random variance 옵션모형을 도출하였고 이것을 Black-Scholes 옵션모형과 비교하였다. 장기유럽식 옵션에 대하여 주가변동성(株價變動性)의 위험(危險)프레미엄이 중요한 요소이고 위험(危險)프레미엄을 고려한 random variance 옵션모형이 위험(危險)을 고려치 않는 random variance옵션모형(模型)보다 예측력이 높게 나타났다.

  • Resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. A comprehensive foundation design case study on an actual bridge was performed using resistance factors developed in this study. Comparing with Allowable Stress Design (ASD), LRFD design method provides quantitative evaluation of safety level of designed foundation and exhibits considerable potential economy in design.

  • A new bridge scour countermeasure using geobags and recycled aggregates which is more stable and economical than existing methods is proposed, and its stability was verified through material tests. PP short staple nonwoven geotextile and PET long staple nonwoven geotextile produced in Korea were selected, and a series of strength tests and a test of hydraulic characteristics were conducted to determine a suitable geotextile for geobags. A series of leaching test was also conducted to assess the potential environmental risk of recycled concrete produced in Korea when it is utilized as a material for protecting bridge piers against scour.
