The study aims at identifying catalogers' perception of competencies in cataloging. The study focuses on cataloging and classification knowledge, library systems, materials, metadata formats, authority control, foreign language, computer skills, and interdependence and personal skills. It discusses the gap between previous studies and catalogers' perceptions of competencies required for the job. It provides implications for cataloging education. It has values in that the study as an exploratory study urges continuous studies to identify how catalogers' perceptions are changed according to information environment. It will be a base to develop job descriptions for catalogers.

The purpose of the paper is to review the key factors of automation and information technology which have generally had the first and the most impact on traditional cataloging department and catalogers. Additioansl qualities and skills which the catalogers in this environment will need are indentified. The review is done through the examination of research reports and results of numerous library surveys. The overall climate of change is toward a process of conver gent evolution between catalogers and public service librarians. The heads of technical services departments and several catalogers in eight Korean academic libraries including National Central Library are interviewed to find out the present development of automation and any effect on cataloging staff in terms of work and organizational structure. It is too early to have any such changing impact as the automation is still in its implementing stage. However, they see the future when professional catalogers are expected to serve in much extended role as the automation stages are moving ahead.

도서관에서 기술의 진보와 표준화로 인해 분류 목록 업무가 근본적으로 달라지진 않았지만 목록 작성 방법이나 이용자에게로의 제공 방법은 분명히 변하였다. 따라서 이러한 업무를 책임져야하는 정리 부서 담당 사서는 전에 비해 여러가지 자질을 필요로 하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 American Libraries라는 미국 도서관계 잡지의 사서직 구인 광고를 바탕으로 1970년도부터 1995년도에 이르기까지 변화한 목록사서의 임용조건을 직책명, 목록경력, 업무감독 경력, 서지 유틸리티, 기계가독형 목록 경험, 분류체계, 기타 경력, 인성, 언어, 주제 분야 등의 요소로 나누어 분석하여 관련 교육 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

This study reviews the meaning and the usefulness of academic studies on acquisition and cataloging service(technical service), reveals problems and seeks solutions in terms of the librarian working in field, university library. The problems were found from the side of library and librarian, and from that of academic area, along with the lack of linking role of government agency. As solutions to enhance the usefulness of academic studies, this study suggests three points; the opportunities of communication of both sides, research based approach of librarians in the field and continuous field based verification from academic side. Currently librarians get limited help from the academic studies however, it is necessary to interact, correlate each other as subjects for mutual prosperity.

Information inquiries asked of the 'Librarian's Community' will reveal the real problems and interests of the university libraries. This paper intends to find out in what areas the university libraries have most problems and interests and how serious they are by analyzing the contents of inquires. To identify the issues, the works in the university libraries including acquisition, cataloging, reference services, library automation and Interlibrary loan were analyzed. This research also tries to identify if the issues need to be handled by the legal or solved by individual libraries.

Information technologies has been playing critical roles in libraries and the practice of information technologies has expanded to various service areas. This study investigated information technological factors in the qualifications of librarian job ads to identify major information technology skills and experiences for librarians. As the result of investigation, the major preferences for information technology skills and experiences are identified in each group of librarians such as administration and management, reference, technical service.

인터넷의 급격한 발달과 보급으로 정보환경이 변함에 따라 이용자의 정보 요구도 변하게 되었으며 사서 고유의 전문성도 위협을 받게 되었다. 본 고에서는 정보의 입수과정 보다는 논문작성 과정에서 도움을 필요로 하는 최근의 이용자의 요구를 충족시키고 사서의 전문성을 활용할 수 있는 서비스로서 논문작성의 준비부터 논문의 작성, 투고, 게재에 이르기까지의 모든 단계를 지원하는 연구논문 지원 서비스를 제시하였다. 국내외의 문헌과 사례를 조사하고 삼성의학정보센터에서 실시하였던 서비스를 소개하였으며 앞으로 확장 발전시킬 사서의 역할에 대해 정리하였다.

This study investigated organizational changes in technical services of university libraries and analysed librarians' perception on the changes of technical service department by the survey to 32 technical service librarians. It also identified several factors that have changed work environment of technical departments such as the shared cataloging and outsourcing, and electronic resources in various formats and creation of metadata for these resources. Most librarians agreed that university libraries have to foster technical librarians' professioanal development to cope with emerging changes of technical services. They also recognized that the integration of traditional cataloging and metadata management is an important issue of orgranizational changes. Contrary to librarians' perception, technical service librarians were not fully awared of the procedure of metadata related works in other departments. Furthermore metadata creation and management were also conducted in several departments of libraries without proper control.

The purpose of this study are to analyze tasks of the public librarians through Job Analysis ('DACUM') and to survey the demands of professional librarian (professional librarian types), As the results, In public libraries, technical services (classification, cataloging etc.,) is reduced, while reading, culture (continued education), and information service are increased. Also, we identified 5 types of professional librarian which is composed 4 function oriented types, and 1 user oriented types, is suggested : reading coach, cultural service librarian, external work librarian, computing support librarian, children librarian.

In recent years, the worries of professionalism of the professions have been long lasting and the debate of securing the expertise by improving the curriculum and qualification system as well. In this study, we have focused on cases where Japanese' securing the expertise of profession through practicing specific and systematic movement by reorganizing the curriculum and implicating an expertise evaluation system. First, we analyzed the relevant qualifications for librarians and education system of Japan. Second, we organize the requirements of the Library and the studies of Library and Information Science (LIS) in Japan to secure expertise. Third, based on the requirements of the site and the results, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages by focusing on recent changes in the curriculums and expertise evaluation system.
