The required connection ductility has been evaluated, considering geometric, material and connection nonlinearity, for 6-story unbraced and 20-story braced steel structures subjected to ultimate lateral load. For material nonlinearity, section moment-curvature relationship and member stiffness matrix have been derived utilizing fiber model and linear flexibility distribution model. In 6-story structure with semi-rigid connections for rigid connection, the required connection ductility is less than that for rigid connection. In 20-story structure, the required connection ductility for semi-rigid connection is almost the same as that for shear connection and the required ductility for rigid connection is larger than that for semi-rigid or shear connection.

This paper proposes a method to predict the ductility capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the formations of plastic hinges at both ends of the adjacent beams. The current design code divides joints into two categories: Type 1 for structures in non seismically hazard area and Type 2 in seismically hazard area. While there are many researches related to joint shear strength in Type 1, those in regard to joint ductility capacity of Type 2 are scarce. This paper classified the ductility capacity of beam-column joints into column, joint panel, and beam deformability. Since a brittle failure such as shear or bond failure in the columns must be avoided, column deformability was calculated by elastic analysis. The plastic hinges of the adjacent beams affect joint deformability. Therefore, the prediction of joint deformability was calculated with consideration to the degradation of the diagonally compressed concrete due to the strain penetration.
Flat plate-column connections are susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in collapse of the overall structure. In the present study, a new shear reinforcement for the plate-column connection, the lattice shear reinforcement was developed. Experimental study for the lattice shear reinforcement was performed. Shear strength and ductility of the specimens reinforced with the lattice bars were compared with those of unreinforced specimens. The test results showed that the strength and ductility of the specimens with the lattice shear reinforcement were improved by 1.37 and 9.16 times those of the unreinforced specimens, respectively. These results indicates that the lattice shear reinforcement is superior in ductility to the shear stud-rail which is popular in U.S. Based on the test results, the design method for the lattice shear reinforcement was developed.

The use of precast concrete segments facilitates quality control and reduces construction cost and period. However, as a construction method it has limited applicability, for it demonstrates structurally disadvantageous behaviors due to stress concentration and large displacement in the joint of assembled segments. This paper proposes a precast segment joint with improved structural performance, and experimentally assesses the structural performance of the proposed joint in terms of crack and failure modes, deformation, maximum load and displacement ductility. In consideration of constructability and structural performance, this paper suggests different types of joint with shear key, post tension and steel rods as variables, and performs a static loading test on them. The test results show that the performance of SGSP specimens is around 84% that of a monolithic specimen in terms of the maximum load, while their ductility behaviors are better than the monolithic specimen. This result confirms the improved structural performance and applicability of the proposed joint.

This study presents a simplifled calculation method for required ductility of coupling beams in precast coupled shear walls at preliminary seismic design stages. Deflection of precast coupled shear walls based on a continuum approach is combined with inelastic gap opening of horizontal connection of panels to provide a relationship between the system-level ductility and the element-level ductility in a precast coupled shear wall. The equation proposed herein for ductility requirement for coupling beams shows that higher stiffness and lower strength of coupling beams result in high ductility reuqirement. The equation also shows that the ductility requirement is proportional to the degree of gap opening of the story in question. However, the coupling beam ductility in higher stories are not affected by gap openings of horizontal connections of panel.
The beam-column assembly in a ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frames subjected to seismic loading are generally controlled by shear and bond mechanisms, both of which exhibit poor hysteretic properties. Hence the response of joints is restricted essentially to the elastic domain. The usual earthquake resistant design philosophy of ductile frame buildings allows the beams to form plastic hinges adjacent to beam-column assembly. Increased strain in these plastic hinge regions affect on joint strain to be increased. Thus bond and shear joint strength are decreased. The research reported in this paper presents the test results of five RC beam-column assembly after developing plastic hinges in beams. Main parameter of the test Joints was the amount of the longitudinal tensile reinforcement of the beams. Test results indicted that the ductile capacity of joints increased as the longitudinal tensile reinforcement of the beams decreased. In addition, both the tensile strain of the longitudinal reinforcement bars in the joint and the ductile ratio of the beam-column assemblages increased due to the yielding of steel bars in the plastic hinge regions.
Structural analysis and design of steel frames is usually conducted under the assumption that beam-to-column connections are either fixed or pinned. In reality, each connection possesses a certain rotational stiffness. In this study, structural analysis program is developed, which takes into account the nonlinear behavior of framed structures including flexibility of semi-rigid connections and member geometric nonlinearity. Effective semi-rigid connections for a 6-story unbraced steel frame are suggested and the effect of flexible connections on the behavior of the structure are studied.
In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. An inelastic time history analysis of structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of semi-rigid connections were used for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of a steel beam and a column, a three-parameter power model for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection, and a three-parameter model for the hysteretic behavior of a steel beam, column, and connection. The base-shear force, top displacement, story drift, required ductility for the connection, maximum bending moment of the column, beam, and connection, and distribution of the plastic hinge were investigated using four earthquake excitations with peak ground acceleration for a mean return period of 2,400 years and for the maximum base-shear force in the pushover analysis of a 5% story drift. The maximum base-shear force and story drift decreased with the outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection, and the required ductility for the connection decreased with the higher horizontal distribution of the semi-rigid connection. The location of the maximum story drift differed in the pushover analysis and the time history analysis, and the magnitude was overestimated in the pushover analysis. The outer vertical distribution of the semi-rigid connection was recommended for the base-shear force, story drift, and required ductility for the connection.
In this study, an unbraced five-story steel-framed structure was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to understand the features of structural behavior for the arrangement of semi-rigid connections. A pushover analysis of the structural models was performed, wherein all the connections were idealized as fully rigid and semi-rigid. Additionally, horizontal and vertical arrangements of the semi-rigid connection were adopted for the models. A fiber model was utilized for the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and the column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semi-rigid connection. The top displacement, base-shear force, required ductility for the connection, sequence of the plastic hinge, and design factors such as the overstrength factor, ductility factor, and response modification coefficient were investigated using the pushover analysis of a 2D structure subjected to the equivalent static lateral force of KBC2005. The partial arrangement of the semi-rigid connection was found to have secured higher strength and lateral stiffness than that of the A-Semi frame, and greater ductility than the A-Rigid frame. The TSD connection was found suitable for use for economy and safety in the sample structure.
The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with non-seismic detailing. Interior and exterior beam-column subassemblages were selected from a ten-story RC building and six 1/3-scale specimens were constructed with three variables; (1) with and without slab, (2) with and without hoop bars in the joint region, (3) upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams of exterior beam-column subassemblage. The test results have shown; (1) in case of interior beam-column subassemblage, there is no almost difference between nonseismic and seismic details in the strength and ductility capacity; (2) the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) in the exterior joint caused the 10%∼20% reduction of strength and 27% reduction of ductility in comparison with the case of seismic details; and the existence of hoop bars in the joint region shows no effect in shear strain.
