  • The shear stress on a surface due to the thin film fluid flow is an important issue. In case of a rotating disk, the fluid is delivered to the edge of the disk by centrifugal force, which acts as a body force on the fluid. Wear of a surface is affected by the shear stress acting on the surface and curvature. In this study, we utilize computational fluid dynamics software to model the ratio of curvature and local shear stress on solid surfaces. The key goal of the study is to determine an optimized curvature for the thin film fluid flow on a solid surface in order to minimize the local shear stress affecting the wear of this surface. Our results on the effects of curvature will be utilized for the design of devices that utilize thin film fluid flow on a solid surface, such as rotating-disk spray systems and thin film coating.

  • To reduce the cost and time of transport in Eurasian railroad networks such as TKR, TCR and TSR owing to the problem of different track gauges(narrow/standard/broad gauge), it is important to develop the gauge - adjustable wheelset system to adapt easily to these gauges. Moreover, freight trains having the gauge - adjustable wheelset will be run various curved tracks in railroad networks. Therefore, to assure the safety of the gauge-adjustment wheelset system, it is necessary to evaluate integrity of locking parts in the system using stress analysis. In this study, it was performed to contact stress analysis of locking parts by using FEA(finite element analysis) simulator during the gauge changeover operation and freight trains' service in the curved track, respectively.

  • Thin films and coating technologies are used for an enormous and diverse set of application including mechanical and automotive components. Many of these applications require the various properties which can be used for decreasing wear, friction and cost, and increasing the long life. The relationship between the load and the stress is usually nonlinear. The material is often apt to deform plastically under the low loads. Numerical method may be used for some simple problems of the coating. If the property of coating and base materials are inhomogeneous and the geometry is complex, the numerical method may be recommended. In this paper, the contact normal stress of the coating layer has been solved using finite element method.

  • Seals in universal joint bearing are a important component reinforcing lubrication performance by holding a lubricant and preventing infiltration of dust, moisture, etc. There is a great difference in seal performance according to seal shape and bonding position. Therefore, in this study, as for the lib type seal and O-ring type seal, FEM analysis are conducted using Mooney-Rivlin Model. The results are indicate that O-ring having higher contact stress and larger contact area than lib type is more profitable.

  • Proposed is a new method to determine the characteristic lengths for the failure analysis of composite joint without experiments. New method uses the result that the stress distribution in the characteristic length specimens is linearly proportional to the applied load. The compressive characteristic lengths calculated by the present method are exactly same as the lengths obtained by the conventional method based on experiment. The new tensile characteristic length is defined using the strength of the notched laminate, while previous methods use the strength of the sound laminate. That change allows calculating the tensile characteristic length numerically without experiment like the compressive characteristic length. Finite element analyses are conducted by MSC/NASTRAN. The interface between the fastener and laminate is modeled by the contact surface element. The finite element results based on the new characteristic lengths show the excellent agreement with experimental results for the Graphite/Epoxy composite .joints.

  • Because typical gas turbine systems have frequent startup and shutdown operations, it is likely to cause cracks at the gas turbine casing and gas leakages at casing flanges due to thermal fatigue and embrittlement. Therefore, the evaluation of structural integrity and gas leakage at the gas turbine casings must be performed. In this paper, we have evaluated the structural integrity of the turbine casing and bolts under a normal operation in accordance with ASME B&PVC and evaluated the leakage at casing flanges by examination of contact pressure calculated using the finite element analysis. Finally, we propose a design flow including finite element modeling, the interpretation and evaluation methods for gas turbine casings. This may be utilized in the design and development of gas turbine casings.

  • In this study, we Presented computational results on the blood flow in the sac of the Korean artificial heart. Two dimensional unsteady flow was assumed and we utilized a finite element commercial code ADINA to simulate the blood flow. Rigid body-solid contact were considered between the actuator and the blood sac and fluid-structure interaction between the blood and the sac. The three geometric models proposed in the design process were simulated to assess the hemodynamic characteristics of the models According to the computational results, a strong flow to the outlet and a stagnated flow region near the inlet were observed during systole. The sac was filled with blood and recirculating flow was generated near the outlet during diastole. Shear stress during systole had its extreme values near the outlet edge whereas the magnitude of shear stress values were relative)v high near the inlet edge and the contacting surface with the actuator.

  • In general, the foundation refers to a group pile with several single piles connected by an upper structure. However, when a load is applied to pile groups, the range of stress applied to the ground is expanded and overlapped compared with the single pile, so the overall bearing capacity may decrease. This reduction ratio of bearing capacity is referred to as the efficiency of pile groups. Therefore, in this study, the soil composition, the arrangement and spacing of group piles, and the contact characteristics between the ground and piles were set as analysis variables, and the group pile efficiency and individual pile behavior were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the efficiency of pile groups tends to converge or decrease when the friction coefficients are increased with ground type. Through this, the optimal efficiency of pile groups can be derived. In addition, through the analysis of individual piles, the load ratio of each pile was analyzed when an upper load was applied. In the case of piles located inside group piles, the load was relatively low, and this is considered to have an influence on the internal ground.

  • Failure of Kevlar29/Phenolic composite plate under high velocity impact of FSP(Fragment Simulation Projectile) is investigated using a non-linear explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA. Composite laminate and impactor are idealized by solid element and interface between laminas are modeled by tied-break element in LS-DYNA. Interaction between impactor and laminate is simulated face-to-face eroding contact algorithm. When the stress level meets a failure criteria, the layer in the element is eroded. Numerical results are verified by existing test results.
