  • Variation in relative contents of clay minerals was used to genetically interpret depositional environment of the Upper Jurassic Solnhofen limestone. Mineralogical examination of whole rocks and clay fractions indicates that the faule and flinz beds are composed mainly of calcite and quartz with minor amount of clay minerals such as illite, kaolinite, and smectite. Smectite shows a trend of illitization: illite layers increase with increasing of burial depth. With increasing burial depth, relative abundance of kaolinite with quartz and illite increases. This implies that the Solnhofen basin was formed during the transgression based on reduce of terrigenous influx.

  • Soils originated from limestone, located at the southern part of Kangwon province and Jecheon, Danyang of Chungbuk province are mainly composed of fine texture, have different properties from soils originated from granite and granite gneiss, especially for water movement. This study was conducted for making PTF(Pedo-Transfer Function) for Kfs(field saturaton hydraulic conductivity) estimation, and for investigating the relation between soil particle distribution and the infiltration and percolation rate in soils originated from limestone. Soils used for the experiment were 6 soils of Gwarim, Mosan, Jangseong, Maji, Anmi and Pyongan series. Infiltration and percolation rate for the soil were measured by a disc tension infiltrometer and a Guelph permeameter, respectively. The particle size distribution and organic matter content of the soils were analyzed. Kfs was not related with sand, silt, clay, and organic mattrer (OM) content because of forest soils which contained high gravel, pebble, and cobble content, and O layer with high OM content. After Mosan soil series and O layer of Gwarim series were excluded for the data analysis, Kfs was explained as a linear function with sand and clay content and a exponential function with OM content. As a result, the PTF equation was obtained as Kfs=-4.20558+0.479706*(S)+0.023187*exp(1.829*OM) ($R^2=0.6558^{*}$).

  • This study was conducted to establish the statistic model by use the soil physico-chemical properties for prediction of ginseng root yield. Twenty seven farmer's red ginseng fields from the ginseng growing area were chosen for this study. Root yield of 6-year old ginseng was $1.85{\pm}0.54Kg$ per $3.3m^2$, and it showed positive correlation between yield and porosity, content of clay, clay and silt, organic matter, cation exchange capacity of the field soils, respectively, but showed a negative correlation with available phosphate. Prediction of root yield was possible with equation combined with porosity($X_1$), content of clay($X_2$), clay and silt($X_3$), available phosphate($X_4$), CEC($X_5$), the equation is $Y=-1.175+0.033X_1-0.04X_2+0.012X_3-0.001X_4+0.171X_5$. Standard partial regression coefficients were 0.3799 in CEC, 0.1550 in content of clay, 0.0890 in porosity, 0.0599 in content of clay silt, and -0.0138 in available phosphate.

  • The identification works of the clay minerals in the Paju series soil of an alfisol, aquic hapludalf, which is derived from the basalt were carried out by the X-ray diffractometer and with the aid of the complete chemical analysis of the clay fractions as well. It also conducted to determine the contents of the identified minerals which correspond to peaks of the diffraction lines appeared at 0.72, 1.0, and 1.4nm respectively. The expansible 2:1 minerals, micas and micaceous minerals, kaolinite minerals, and gibbsite were identified by the X-ray method. Furthermore, the X-ray results are seemed to be partly supported by the chemical analysis because of the presence of illite in the fractions could be confirmed by the values of $SiO_2/A1_2O_3$ mole ratio which ranged from 2.33 to 2.61. The average contents of the 1.4nm minerals. montmorillonite and vermiculite, 1.0nm micas and micaceous minerals, and 0.72nm kaolinite minerals are 42%, 28%, and 30% respectively. The theoretical considerations for the formations of these minerals were also given and that seemed to be well coincided with the experimental results, The presence of the Bt horizons and the kaolinite with gibbsite equilibria in the soil could be interpreted that the weathering is deeply advanced so far under the given soil environmental conditions.

  • This study was conducted to investigate ginger growth and its nutrient uptake depending on changes of soil properties as affected by applications of green manure crop and/or charcoal in continuous cropping system. The green manure crops applied were barley and hairy vetch, and charcoal was additionally treated in selected plots as a soil conditioner. Experimental plots were prepared as Plot 1 (control), Plot 2 (barley of 8kg $10a^{-1}$), Plot 3 (hairy vetch of 12kg $10a^{-1}$), Plot 4 (charcoal of 1,000kg $10a^{-1}$ and barley 8kg $10a^{-1}$), and Plot 5 (charcoal of 1,000kg $10a^{-1}$ and hairy vetch of 12kg $10a^{-1}$) with two different soil conditions (high clay content, HCC and low clay content, LCC). When comparing selected chemical properties of soils before and after cultivating ginger plant, soil pH decreased from 6.9~8.1 to 6.8~7.6, and electrical conductivity (EC) also declined from $0.45{\sim}1.25dSm^{-1}$ to $0.30{\sim}0.61dSm^{-1}$. However, the content of soil organic matter (SOM) and total nitrogen (T-N) increased. Thus, the soil chemical properties were improved with the applications of green manures and charcoal. Also, macro- and micro-nutrient contents of ginger plants in the different plots were various between normal and diseased plants grown in soils with HCC and LCC. In particular, the concentration of manganese (Mn) was 3~4 folds higher in the diseased plant than in the normal plants. Ginger growth status and yield was relatively improved with the applications of green manures and charcoal as comparing with control plot. Especially in the Plot 4 with LCC, the ginger plant was not infected by root-rot disease.

  • The present paper summerizes the studies on clay mineralogical characteristics of Korean soil, relationship between potassium and clay minerals, potassium release pattern of clay minerals and utilization of clay minerals for soil conditioner and fertilizers, which have been carried out in this laboratory. 1. The red yellow podzolic soil is mostly abundant in the upland of Korea and mainly consists of halloysite and weathered intermediates of mica such as illite and vermiculite. 2. With regard to soil parent material, kaolin mineral occurs abundant in soils derived from granite and granite gneiss. Mica is dominant in basaltic soil. The main clay mineral of the soil, originated from the Tertiary, is found montmorillonite and the volcanic soil of Jeju Island has plenty of allophane as its main clay mineral. 3. It is confirmed that the soil fertility depends on the composition of clay minerals. The red yellow podzolic soil, containing lot of kaolin, shows low productivity while the montmorillonite soil has higher productivity. 4. The release rate of solid phase potassium (micas and fixed potassium) follows the 1st order reaction equation in the equilibrium solution of $IN-NH_4OAc$. The potassium release constant is positively correlated with the mica content of the clay but negatively correlated with the content of $14.5{\AA}$ minerals. On the other hand, the potassium release constant has very high correlation with the ratio(Kex/Kt) of exchangeable potassium(Kex) to total potassium(Kt). 5. It is also found that Kex/Kt has rather high correlation with the content of mica and $14.5{\AA}$ minerals existed in the clay as well as the mica content of the soil.

  • To understand the transport pathways of muddy sediment of the Kunsan basin in Yellow Sea, grain sizes and clay mineral of 32 surface sediments and a sediment core were analyzed. In the study area, illite is predominant (63.4~71.9%), followed by chlorite (15.1~20.2%), kaolinite (10.3~17.2%) and smectite (2~6.9%), According to the spatial distribution of the clay minerals, illite, kaolinite+chlorite and smectite show relatively higher contents in the center of the north, northeast, and the south of the study area, respectively. Considering the spatial distribution of clay mineral contents the sand ridge alignments and tidal current pathways, the smectite particles were probably derived from the south of the study area, but kaolinite and/or chlorite particles were mainly transported from the Korean coastal zone. Meanwhile, down-core variation in the contents of clay minerals of the core revealed a distinct change in fine-grained muddy sediment provenance: muddy sediment input from the Korean coastal areas has increased while the input from China has decreased since the last 5,000 year ago, by showing the amount decrease of smectite and the increase of kaolinite+chlorite at the top layer of the late Holocene muddy sediment unit of the core.

  • There have rarely been performed for the clay mineralogy of the East Sea sediments except for few studies about paleoenvironmental aspect. This study inferred the provenance of sediments based on the clay mineral characteristics and distribution pattern for the 120 sediment samples collected by the box corer from the Gangneung-Donghae area between 2017-2019. The relative proportions of the four major clay minerals are abundant in the order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The continental shelf sediments below water depth 150 m have more chlorite and kaolinite content and better illite crystallinity, but less illite and smectite content, and S/I index than those of continental slope sediments. Clay mineral composition of the continental shelf sediments are influenced by the adjacent continental geology, because north site (Gangneung area) has more chlorite but south site (Donghae area) has more kaolinite. These characteristics and distribution pattern of clay minerals indicate that the provenance of sediments are different between continental shelf and continental slop. The continental shelf sediments may be introduced the study area by the adjacent small rivers whereas the continental slope sediment might be supplied by current from the south of the study area.
