  • A three node triangular element with drilling rotations incorporating improved higher-order zig-zag theory(HZZT) is developed to accurately assess the stress distribution through thickness of the laminated plate and analyze the vibration of pretwisted composite plates with embedded damping layer. Shear force matching conditions are enforced along the interfaces between the embedded damping patch and the border patch. The natural frequencies and model loss factors are calculated for cantilevered pretwisted composite blade with damping core with the present triangular element, and compared to experiments and MSC/NASTRAN using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.

  • This paper summarizes a study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as an energy dissipation device in the frame structure. It can be concluded that, even at high temperatures, the viscoelastically damped structure can achieve a significant reduction of structural response as compared to the case with no dampers added. Empirical formulae for estimating the dynamic properties of the viscoelastic damper are established based on the regression analysis using data obtained from component tests of the damper. The structural damping with added dampers can be satisfactorily estimated by the modal strain energy method and the derived empirical formulae. Numerical simulations using conventional modal analysis methods are also carried out to predict the dynamic response of viscoelastically damped structures under seismic excitations. Comparison between numerical simulations and test results shows very good agreement. Based on the above studies, a design procedure for viscoelastically damped structures is present . This design procedure fits naturally into the conventional structural design flow-chart by including damping ratio an additional design parameter.

  • Rubber compounds have a high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate, and the amount of swelling varies with operational conditions in extrusion. It is well recognized that the elastic portion in the viscoelastic property plays an important role in the extrudate swell. In this study computer simulation of the die swell at the capillary die for several rubber compounds has been performed using commercial CFD code, Polyflow. A non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) model, was used in the computer simulation. Non-isothermal behavior was considered in the calculation. Distribution of pressure, velocity and temperature in the reservoir and capillary die, and extrudate profiles were predicted through the simulation. The amount of the die swell fur the different rubber compounds was investigated for various flow rates and three types of length to diameter of the capillary die. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented viscoelastic behavior of rubber compounds.

  • A three node triangular element with drilling rotations incorporating improved higher-order zig-zag theory(HZZT) is developed to analyze the vibration of pretwisted composite plates with embedded damping layer. Shear force matching conditions are enforced along the interfaces between the embedded damping patch and the border patch by matching the shear forces of the embedded damping patch to the shear forces of the adjacent border patch. The natural frequencies and modal loss factors are calculated for cantilevered pretwisted composite blade with damping core with the present triangular element, and compared to experiments and MSC/NASTRAN using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.

  • This work is concerned with the chatter suppression by inserting viscoelastic materials into tool clamping area. Chatter was observed with and without the viscoelastic materials during cutting tests, where the overhang of the tool was made long so that the tool may be a major cause for the chatter. Two viscoelastic materials were used and the effects of thickness and prestrain were investigated. impact tests were performed on the tool in cases where the tool post was set on the cross slide and was free from any boundary conditions. Material properties of the viscoelastic materials were also obtained from resonance test results. The effects on the chatter suppression by the type of the viscoelastic material and prestrain are discussed in relation with the measured material properties.

  • The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is now under construction in Korea. For the stability analysis for the caverns of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For the analysis, in-situ rock stress were measured by overcoring method. The stress measurement showed that initial horizontal to vertical stress ratio was 1.07-1.32 in low powerhouse sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from rock core properties through engineering processes. So the ratio of input elasticity fur the analysis were about 0.16-0.55 to rock core elasticity. In most of the analysis, elasto-plastic condition with Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria were applied. But in one case, viscoelastic condition was applied, too. The input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 to rock core strength parameters, respectively.

  • The asphalt-concrete trackbed system has many advantages in terms of maintenance and economics. However, methods to investigate practical use corresponding to the development of the trackbed system must be developed. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the dynamic performance of the asphalt system in accordance with both the elastic and viscoelastic material characteristics and design thickness of the asphalt trackbed. More specifically, in order to reduce the uncertainty error of the Finite Element(FE) model, a three-dimensional full scale FE model was developed and then the infinite foundation model was considered. Finally, to compare the condition of viscoelastic materials, performance evaluation of the asphalt-concrete trackbed system was used to deal with the dynamic amplification factors; numerical results using isotropic-elastic materials in the FE analysis are presented.

  • The objective of this research was to develop a VEPCD (ViscoElastoPlastic Continuum Damage) Model which is used to predict the behavior of asphalt concrete under various loading and temperature conditions. This paper presents the VEPCD model formulated in a tension mode and its validation using four hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures: dense-graded HMA, SBS, CR-TB, and Terpolymer. Modelling approaches consist of two components: the ViscoElastic Continuum Damage (VECD) mechanics and the ViscoPlastic (VP) theory. The VECD model was to describe the time-dependent behavior of HMA with growing damage. The irrecoverable (whether time-dependent or independent) strain has been described by the VP model. Based on the strain decomposition principle, these two models are integrated to form the VEPCD model. For validating the VEPCD model, two types of laboratory tests were performed: 1) a constant crosshead strain rate tension test, 2) a fatigue test with randomly selected load levels and frequencies.

  • This paper concerns the stress singularity at the interface corner of the viscoelastic adhesive layer bonded between rigid adherends, subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain. The characteristic equation is derived in the Laplace transformed space, following Williams, and the transformed characteristic equation is inverted analytically into real time space for the viscoelastic model considered here. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically. The time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of stresses along the interface. Numerical results show that the order of the singularity increases with time while the free-edge stress intensity factors are relaxed with time.
