  • A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Saemankeum fine-cohesive sediments has been conducted in order to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage of organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Saemankeum sediments are relatively large in average grain size(52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and contain very small organic materials(2%), and are dominantly composed of Quarts in mineralogical aspect which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Saemankeum sediments might be specified as the sediments whose settling properties are more influenced by the gravity than the cohesion. This characteristics of Saemankeum sediments are found to lead to relatively small settling velocity in flocculated settling region in which increasing cohesion results in increasing settling velocity, while relatively large settling velocity in hindered settling region in which settling velocity decreases with increasing cohesion.

  • The revetment is a installed structure on the slope of river bank to protect against flowing. Through the design standards of domestic and overseas, the maximum tractive force is calculated and applied to the average concept on the slope of river bank. In the case of calculating the method of permissible tractive force on the slope of river bank, there is a need to consider soil sliding. In this study, suggested the tractive force formulae by section of adhesion that have 0 < ${\Phi}$ < $90^{\circ}$ slope of river bank and installed an open channel of length of 20 m and 2 m wide for calculating permissible tractive force and hydraulic model experimented with changing discharge. According to the results, the calculated permissible tractive force of section on the slope is the largest due to the significant effects of surface roughness of different revetment materials. In addition, the permissible tractive force increased in the presence of vegetation but has no the effect by vegetation density.

  • Because of recent requirement for environmentally-friendly adhesive, water and/or alkali soluble pressure sensitive adhesives are being developed and produced. Our research laboratory newly developed the test method for measuring the water and alkali solubility of the adhesives. Also, we made the test method published both in KS and ISO. In this research, the test of measuring the water and/or alkali solubility of the test adhesive samples as a function of time at various temperatures was carried out using the proposed test method. The results showed this proposed test method made stable output data for the change of solubility as a function of time in the proper range of temperature.

  • In this study, synthesis of a hydrogel consisted of a coordination bond network between small organic molecules and transition metals had been carried out. By adding a tackifying material to the gel, the potential of the gel to be used as an adhesive material had been also confirmed. Synthesis of the adhesive had been done with simple mixing of 3 components: tannic acid, transition metal, and polymer. The tannic acid molecule possesses multiple hydroxyl groups that can form coordination bonds with the transition metals and hydrogen bonds with the hydrophilic polymers. Due to the morphology of the metal-organic complex and polymer dispersed in water, the fabricated material exhibited high adhesiveness and cohesiveness. Optimizing the rheological property had been conducted for use in adhesive by the synthesis with varying the transition metal (Fe3+, Ti4+), polymer, and treatment conditions. Rheological measurement results demonstrate the promising potential of the material as a bio-compatible and versatile pressure-sensitive adhesive with both high adhesiveness and cohesiveness.

  • The effects of functional monomers on the pressure sensitive adhesive proporties were studied. Acrylic acid and other monomers were copolymerized by radical solution polymerization and their properties were measured. The desirability function methodology was applied to obtain optimum pressure sensitive adhesive properties. Acrylic acid showed more effective than acrylamide on peel strength increase. On the other hand acrylamide showed more effective than acrylic acid on tack decrease. The optimum monomer ratio of the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive recipe containing n-butylacrylate 81.7 mole%, acrylic acid 8.0 mole%, acrylamide 2.1 mole% and vinylacetate 8.2 mole% was obtained to result from the statistical analysis with the desirability function methodology. The estimated regression equation of desirability function(D) is as follows: $D=.857+.072X_1-.114X_2-.027X_3-.126X_1{^2}-.046X_1{\cdot}X_2-.063X_1{\cdot}X_3-.152X_2{^2}+.027X2{\cdot}X_3-.120X_3{^2}$ $X_1$:coded acylic acid, $X_2$:coded acylamide, $X_3$:coded vinylacetate

  • The effects of intra-particle composition on the adhesive properties and water dispersity of acrylic emulsion type pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were investigated. In the case of PSA having uniform intra-particle composition, the higher holding strength made the water dispersity lower. By changing the intra-particle composition in hard core/soft shell type, however, it was possible to get PSAs showing both high holding strength and water dispersity. When the weight ratio of MAA/AA is 4/1, high holding strength, but low initial tack and very low water dispersity were observed in both cases of higher contents of (AA+MAA) in core and shell area. When the weight ratio of MAA/AA is 1/4, however, higher water dispersity and lower holding strength were indicated in the case of higher contents of (AA+MAA) in shell area.

  • The purpose of this study is to quantify the erosional parameters, such as the critical shear stress for erosion and the erosion rate coefficient for cohesive sediments from the Mokpo coast. Using Chonbuk annular flume, five erosion tests were conducted under the uniform bed condition but a different bed density respectively. Erosion test results for Mokpo sediments have shown increases in the range of $0.16{\sim}0.43\;N/m^2$ but decreases exponentially in the range of $272{\sim}4.64\;mg/cm^2{\cdot}hr$ for the given bed shear stress of $1.14{\sim}1.34\;g/cm^3$. The erosional parameters of Mokpo sediments are found to vary remarkably in quantity compared with those for cohesive sediments from other sites. On the whole, the value of Mokpo coast sediments appears to be similar to Kunsan sediments but smaller than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments. On the other hand, Mokpo sediments have been shown to be larger than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments but smaller than Kunsan sediments.
