Understanding the frictional properties of rock discontinuities is crucial to ensure the stability of underground structures. In particular, the frictional behavior at depth depends on the complex interaction among mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and chemical characteristics and their coupled effects. In this study, a series of shear tests were carried out in a triaxial compression chamber to investigate the shearing behavior of saw-cut granite surface and rough shear surface of synthetic rocks. The test results were analyzed using Coulomb's shear strength criterion. The frictional behavior of saw-cut granite surface showed little variation at different confining, water pressures and temperature conditions, however in case of synthetic rocks, the frictional behavior showed different trend depending on normal stress level. In addition, the variation of stiffness and dilation at different testing conditions were analyzed, and the stiffness and dilation showed little variation at different water pressures and temperature conditions.

This study presents the experimental results of ground improvement efficiency induced by enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) in soils. First, the optimal mixture ratio of EICP solution was determined by comparing the amount of induced carbonate depending on the different ratio among urea, CaCl2, and urease. Next, we evaluated the shear stiffness and strength of EICP-treated sandy soil by performing shear wave velocity measurement and triaxial shear test. Furthermore, induced carbonate in treated soil was visually investigated by X-ray CT and SEM analysis. The results showed that the maximum shear stiffness evolved 19~30 times after 6 hours of reaction time compared with non-treated sands. Also, the cohesion and the friction angle tended to increase and decrease, respectively, as the amount of induced carbonate increased.

In this study, the erosional properties of deposit bed for the natural sediments are quantitatively estimated domestically for the first time using annular flume. Four erosion tests for Saemankeum sediments have been carried out on different consolidation time. Experimental results of erosional tests show that shear strength ${\tau}_s$ increases with the increases of consolidation time and bed depth. The erosion rate increases logarithmically with the increases of exceed shear strength ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s$. But, the erosion rate decreases rapidly with the decreases of exceed shear strength under the $0.2N/m^2$. Experimental results of this study are found to be remarkably different in quantity as compared with those for results of previous study.
Anti-adhesion coatings are very important in the processing of adhesive materials such as optical clear adhesive (OCA) films. Choosing the appropriate release coating material for dies and tools can be quite challenging. Hydrophobic surface treatment is usually performed, and its performance is often estimated by the static water contact angle (CA). However, the relationship between the release performance and the CA is not well understood. In this study, the water CAs of surfaces coated with anti-adhesion materials and the peel strengths of the acrylic-based adhesive films are evaluated. STC5 and SUS304 are selected as the base materials. Base materials with different surface roughnesses are produced by hairline finishing, mirror-polishing, and end milling. Four fluoropolymer compounds, including a self-assembled monolayer, are selected to make the base surface hydrophobic. Static, advancing, and receding CAs are mostly increased due to the coating, but the CA hysteresis is found to increase or decrease depending on the coating material. The peel strengths all decreased after coating and are largely dependent on the coating material, with significantly lower values observed for fluorosilane and perfluoropolyether silane coatings. The peel strength is observed to correlate better with the static CA and advancing CA than with the receding CA or hysteresis. However, it is not possible to accurately predict the anti-adhesion performance based on water CA alone, as the peel strengths are not fully proportional to the CAs.
About 6,000 rock properties obtained from laboratory tests are collected from various projects conducted in Korea Peninsular and the distribution of the properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, cohesion, kriction angle, tangential strength, Young's modulus, p-wave velocity and S-wave velocity are analysed and correlated each other. The empirical equations deduced with 84% of reliability would be useful for preliminary design of geo-structures.
Surface modification of silicone rubber by low temperature plasma process was investigated to improve quality of silicone EVD tube by reducing tackiness and hydrophobicity. Treatment with nonpolymer-forming plasmas and thin film deposition with polymer-forming plasmas were tried. Tackiness could significantly be reduced, especially by thin film deposition. As a result, the tube became slippery and less vulnerable to contamination in laboratory environment. Inner as well as outer surface of the tube could be changed to be hydrophilic if the plasma contained oxygen. As a result, initial hydrodynamic resistance was reduced. The surface modification did not give any bad influence on mechanical properties of the silicone tube in most cases. Rather, some properties such as Young's modulus, ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break were improved.
Friction angle and cohesion of rock masses can be estimated from Hoek and Brown failure criterion and then plastic corrections can be applied using Mohr-Coulomb yield function. This study finds that this estimation procedure would not be appropriate for weak rock masses and for cases where low confining stress is expected to develop. A procedure is outlined in this paper for estimating plastic corrections directly from Hoek and Brown material model. Comparative study shows that direct procedure would simulate non-linear failure surface better than indirect procedure especially in the low confining stress regime.
Multi-stage shear test has been performed using joint specimens of gneiss, granite and shale to investigate the influence of micro-scale asperity change on the shear strength of joint plane. For each shear test asperity degradation characteristics of joint specimens of different joint surface strength have been analyzed by utilizing the optimum asperity parameter which can reflect the sequential asperity degradation. Elevation of joint surface profile has been measured and both the changes of asperity parameters and micro-scale asperity distribution have been investigated. Two distinctive variation modes of cohesion and friction angle have been delineated and major cause of shear strength parameter change has been analyzed by considering the micro-scale asperity angle change resulting from the abrasion, fracturing and regeneration of micro-scale asperities. Effects of micro-scale asperity variation on the joint shear strength have been also investigated.
This study is about the application of waste stone sludge as fill material. Waste stone sludge, weathered granite soil, and the mixture of the former and the latter strengthened with staple fiber are experimentally analyzed for measuring strength property. When staple fiber was mixed with waste stone sludge, weathered granite soil, and the mixture, there was a nearly linear relationship between the amount of the staple fiber and the increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength. The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength was the largest in weathered granite soil. The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength of the mixture was similar to that of waste stone sludge. In the case of the mixture of weathered granite soil and waste stone sludge, an internal friction angle tended to increases rely on increasement of staple fiber content, whereas the change of cohesion was small. An internal friction angle was increased by 21 percent when staple fiber content is 0.75 percent. Comparing with weathered granite soil or waste stone sludge, strength parameters of the mixture were increased relatively. Thus strengthening effect of staple fiber in the mixture is expected.
In the current practice for slope stability problem in Japan, the shear strength, $\tau$, mobilized along the failure surface is usually estimated based on an empirical approximation in which the cohesion, c, is assumed to be equal to the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface, d(m). This approximation is advantageous in that the result of stability analysis is not influenced by the designers in charge. However, since the methodology has little theoretical background, the cohesion may often be grossly overestimated, and conversely the angle of shear resistance, $\phi$, is significantly underestimated, when the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface is quite large. In this paper, a case record of natural slope failure that took place in Hyogo Prefecture in 2007, is described in detail for the case in which the shear strength along the collapsed surface was carefully examined in a series of direct shear box (DSB) tests by considering the effects of in-situ shear stress along the slip surface. It is demonstrated that the factor of safety agrees with that of in-situ conditions when the shear strength from this kind of DSB test was employed for the back-analysis of the slope failure.
