  • 본 연구는 기존의 점자 교육 및 번역 서비스의 한계를 극복하기 위해 16가지의 다양한 번역 메커니즘과 문서 요약 기능을 제공하여 시각장애인의 학습자료의 접근성을 향상한다. 점역사의 번역 작업을 자동화하여 정확하고 빠른 점역 및 교정을 지원한다. 음성파일을 제공하여 시각장애인의 학습 시간을 단축할 수 있다. E-yes 는 시각장애인의 학습 효율을 높이고 학습자료 접근성 개선을 목적으로 한다.

  • 2022년 등록된 장애인은 265만 3,000명으로 전체 인구 대비 5.2%를 기록했으며, 그중 시각장애인은 9.5%에 해당한다. 그들은 여가문화 활동, 대중교통 이용, 무인기 이용에 어려운 점이 있듯이 일상생활에 많은 불편한 점이 있다. 특히 제품의 미비한 점자 시스템으로 인한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 '물품인식 제어장치'를 고안했으며, 제품의 바코드를 스캔한 후 제품에 대한 정보를 점자로 출력과 동시에 음성으로 출력하여 시각장애인에게 올바른 정보를 제공한다.

A Study on User Satisfaction of Information Facilities for the Visually Impaired (시각장애인의 실내안내시설 설치 이용만족도에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The ratio of the visually impaired is gradually increasing due to various causes such as natural aging, accidents, and environmental changes. Therefore, this study has two folds. Firstly, it aims to analyze the current satisfaction level with information facilities for the visually impaired. Secondly, it aims to examine the factors affecting the satisfaction with indoor information facilities. Through this study, it helps to identify problems of information facilities for the visually impaired and it works as a practical data for further improvements. Methods: For 50 visually impaired people, a telephone survey was conducted on the satisfaction with the braille blocks, braille signboards, braille information boards with tactile map, audio guide devices, and safety egress devices. Microsoft Excel and SPSS 26.0 were used for the analysis. Results: It was confirmed that the overall satisfaction with the indoor information facilities was very low. The more the visually impaired people recognized the installation standards, and the better the maintenance was, the higher the satisfaction. In the case of braille blocks and braille signboards, the effect of information transfer on satisfaction was relatively high. In the case of audio guide device and safety egress device, the standard suitability influenced satisfaction. Implications: The low level of satisfaction with the overall information facilities can impede visually impaired people from receiving practical help through the information facilities. Factors influencing the satisfaction level of each facility were identified, which makes it possible to prepare effective improvement measures.

  • Many people have conveniently used various messengers to talk with remote friends or to send urgent files to remote co-workers. Recently, it is also possible to use messenger with user's image. However, these messenger technologies are of no use for the blind. In order to cope with this problem, we propose voice-based messenger with a Braille system for the blind. The proposed messenger enables the blind to listen to the received sentences from remote user. It also enables them to listen to the written sentences before sending to remote user for the purpose of checking that the sentences are correctly written. The Braille system for writing sentences can be implemented by using the programmable NXT system, which contains a 32-bit ARM-7 micro-controller, with 4 touch-sensors. Finally, we apply the Bluetooth technology for wireless communication between the Braille system and the proposed messenger.

Automatic Method for Transforming Image into Tactile Map Based on Cognitive Characteristics of Visually Impaired Persons (시각장애인 인지특성을 기반으로 한 영상자료의 촉각지도 자동 변환 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose the method for automatically transfers images into tactile maps information based on cognition characteristics of visually impaired persons to more easily provide various image information for visually impaired persons. The proposed method automatically classify color images into row complexity and high complexity based on intensity information and transfer images into tactile map information using each different transformation process. Experimental evaluation, We performed with visually impaired five persons experiments for evaluating the recognition and satisfaction that tactile maps of the proposed automatic transforming method and the manually generated tactile maps of braille textbooks. Experimental results, the recognition and satisfaction that the tactile maps of the proposed method generated are very similar to those of the tactile maps of braille textbooks. Therefore, it could hugely be reduced the time and money of production education materials, and it could greatly improved educative results because it can add more easily that many image data of education materials.

  • 옛말에 '우리 몸이 백냥이면 우리 눈은 구십 냥이다'란 말이 있다. 그만큼 시력이 삶에 차지하는 중요성을 피력한 것이다. 눈을 통해 정보를 받아들이는 정도는 거의 90%다. 시각장애우들은 책에 박혀있는 한 점 한 점을 통해 세상을 받아들인다. 잃어버린 90%를 찾기 위해 9배 이상의 노력을 기울일 수밖에 없다.

  • 한글의 가로쓰기와 세로쓰기 체계의 상대적 효율성을, 글을 읽을 때 관찰되는 시선 이동을 측정하여 비교하였다. 실험 1에서는 동일한 글을 가로와 세로 방향으로 제시하고, 글을 읽는 동안 시선 운동(머리 운동과 안구 운동의 합)을 공막탐지코일법(scleral search coil method)으로 측정하였다. 가로글 읽기의 경우, 시선도약(saccade)의 크기가 더 컸으며, 동일한 크기의 도약운동을 비교할 때, 세로글 읽기에 비해 상대적으로 도약운동의 속도가 높았다. 평균 고정기간(fixation duration)은 글의 읽기 방향에 따른 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 시선 도약크기와 도약운동 속도에서의 차이는 가로글을 읽는 속도를 높여 글을 읽는 시선 이동의 효율성이 가로글에서 상대적으로 높았다. 실험 2에서는 팔의 읽기 방향에 따른 시선 이동 변수에서의 차이가 글자극의 독특한 자극 특성에 기인한 것인지 혹은 시각 및 안구 운동 체계에서의 차이를 반영하는 것인지를 결정하고자 하였는데, 의미정보가 없는 점자극을 수평과 수직방향으로 제시하고, 방향에 따른 시선 이동의 차이가 글자극을 사용한 경우와 동일하게 나타나는지를 보았다. 점자극에서도 수평 방향의 시선도 약 운동이 보다 크고 정확한 경향성이 있었다. 이 결과는 사람의 시각 운동 체계가 수평 방향의 시선 이동에 대해 선호성을 보이고 있으며, 이러한 시각 및 안구 운동 체계에서의 차이가 글을 읽는 행동에도 반영되고 있음을 보여준다.

  • In order to extend the activity range of visually impaired persons, we design and implement a navigation system that supports road information services and points of interest. The proposed navigation system consists of route creation modules and storage modules for visually impaired persons. In particular, the main interface of the navigation system are implemented using TTS(Text-to-Speech) program for sound and braille module that outputs braille with sense of touch. We also use google map APIs that can provide latest map information for the navigation system.

Design of Immersive Walking Interaction Using Deep Learning for Virtual Reality Experience Environment of Visually Impaired People (시각 장애인 가상현실 체험 환경을 위한 딥러닝을 활용한 몰입형 보행 상호작용 설계)

  • In this study, a novel virtual reality (VR) experience environment is proposed for enabling walking adaptation of visually impaired people. The core of proposed VR environment is based on immersive walking interactions and deep learning based braille blocks recognition. To provide a realistic walking experience from the perspective of visually impaired people, a tracker-based walking process is designed for determining the walking state by detecting marching in place, and a controller-based VR white cane is developed that serves as the walking assistance tool for visually impaired people. Additionally, a learning model is developed for conducting comprehensive decision-making by recognizing and responding to braille blocks situated on roads that are followed during the course of directions provided by the VR white cane. Based on the same, a VR application comprising an outdoor urban environment is designed for analyzing the VR walking environment experience. An experimental survey and performance analysis were also conducted for the participants. Obtained results corroborate that the proposed VR walking environment provides a presence of high-level walking experience from the perspective of visually impaired people. Furthermore, the results verify that the proposed learning algorithm and process can recognize braille blocks situated on sidewalks and roadways with high accuracy.
